Photos: Chrysler concepts preview
The transfer of Chrysler from Daimler to Cerberus Capital Management this year could be the start of an impressive new chapter in the car brand's history. From these concept sketches, a preview of Chrysler at the 2008 Detroit auto show, it looks like the company is making a fresh start, using this acquisition to revitalize its offerings.
Chrysler considers the ecoVoyager a distinctly American design. It certainly looks futuristic, and maybe portends a convergence between the minivan and sedan. Chrysler specifies an electric power train, using lithium ion batteries and a hydrogen fuel cell to give the concept over 300 emissions-free miles.
Unlike the ecoVoyager, the Dodge ZEO has a sporty look, suggesting that Chrysler will concentrate on making its three brands distinct. But the ZEO is also specified as an electric vehicle. Chrysler says it would have a range greater than 250 miles with its lithium ion batteries but doesn't mention fuel cell or generator as a range extender.
The ZEO is designed as a 2+2 hatchback, sort of a chopped Dodge Magnum. The large air vents in the side probably won't be necessary with an electric power train.
Chrysler designers seem to have combined a dune buggy with a jeep to arrive at the Renegade. As one environmental gesture, the design tries to minimize materials in the body, for example leaving cut-outs in the lower doors. The interior is designed so that you can hose it out.
The power train specified for the Renegade concept is well thought out. Like the other Chrysler concepts, it uses electric propulsion and a lithium ion battery pack, giving it a range of 40 miles, according to Chrysler. It also uses a BlueTec diesel engine as a generator, which Chrysler says will give it 110 mpg.
