2013 Ford C-Max Energi plugs in for maximum mileage (pictures)
Ford's new plug-in hybrid drives under electric power for up to 21 miles, and reverts to a standard hybrid when its electric range is used up.
Ford's new C-Max Energi is based on the company's European C-Max model, but can only be had in the U.S. as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
Energi is Ford's name for its plug-in hybrid vehicles. Along with the C-Max, Ford is also producing a Fusion Energi.
The C-Max Energi's body style is very practical, with room for five passengers and cargo. The high roof line means plenty of headroom.
Along with a gasoline filler on the rear right fender, the C-Max Energi also includes a plug-in port on the left front fender. It will charge off of 110 volts in about 7 hours, or from a 240-volt source in 2.5 hours.
The hybrid power plant combines a 141-horsepower 2-liter engine with a 118-horsepower electric motor. Total system output is rated at 188 horsepower.
The C-Max Energi weighs 259 pounds more than the C-Max Hybrid. The suspension has a somewhat stiff feel, resulting in decent handling.
Power-adjustable heated seats are available, adding some comfort to this plug-in hybrid.
The rear seat backs fold down, but the battery pack in the cargo area makes it so there is no flat load floor.
The C-Max Energi uses an electric power-steering system, which has a good feel at speed. The turning radius is rather wide.
The home screen for the MyFord Touch interface shows phone, navigation, audio, and climate quadrants.
The navigation system renders buildings in 3D for urban centers.
Sirius Travel Link adds data for gasoline prices, weather, traffic, movie times, and sport scores.
Bluetooth streaming audio is about as advanced as it gets, showing track data and including skip and pause controls.
The backup camera includes trajectory lines, and the C-Max Energi can also be had with automatic parallel parking.
