What can you do with a smart button? (pictures)
We tested out the Shortcut Labs Flic and found some of its coolest functions.
The Flic smart button is a Bluetooth connected device from Sweden-based company Shortcut Labs.
The app interface for Flic is simple and intuitive. Adding new Flic buttons takes under a minute.
Flic buttons are small, but they don't feel cheap or unreliable.
Each button can perform tons of actions, each assigned to a button's single press, double press or long hold.
The adhesive back on Flic buttons means you can stick them anywhere and use them as appropriate.
In my car, since I use my phone's music app, I set up the button to provide distraction-free control for my music while driving.
Flic can also control smart devices like the CNET Smart Home's lights. As an ad hoc master light switch, it works pretty well.
Whatever integrations aren't native to the Flic app are probably covered by its partnership with platforms like IFTTT.
Flic buttons also come with clips that allow you to use the button as a wearable. I tried out some of the safety features (like sending your GPS location to an emergency contact), and they worked well, but not well enough to really rely on.
The app's function assignment is simple and visual. The first time I picked up the device, I could set it up within seconds.
Flic is available internationally for $34 individually (about £24 or AU$47), or $99 for four (about £70 or AU$147). Check out our full review for more details.
