Warner Archive
CNET takes the new Warner Archive DVDs-on-demand for a spin.
The front and back covers of the Warner Archive DVDs are obviously based on a template, but they are customized with photos, blurbs, cast lists--they have a budget feel, but the packing is a step-up from some of the truly no-frills custom DVDs we've seen in the past.
The DVDs are custom-manufactured by Warner as needed, based on customer orders.
The theatrical trailer is liable to be the only extra you'll find. Movies are auto-divided into chapters every ten minutes, and there's no scene selection menu.
"The D.I.," a 1957 film with Jack Webb as a Marine drill instructor, is presented in its original black and white anamorphic widescreen format. It looked pretty good for its age. (Webb also directed this one.)
Before "The Godfather," James Caan and Robert Duvall appeared together in Robert Altman's 1968 moon-landing drama "Countdown." While the colors weren't that vibrant, this anamorphic widescreen presentation is probably the best this movie's looked in decades.
