Spying on the Virgin Megastore liquidation sale
The Virgin Megastore is following Circuit City into the abyss, as the chain's U.S. retail stores are in the process of closing down. Similar to Circuit City's infamous liquidation sales, Virgin is currently offering its wares at "up to 30 percent off," according to the copious signage spotting outside the Union Square location in New York.

Up to 30 percent off, or so the signs claim...
One of the few actual deals: 5 percent off of iPods, which are usually never discounted.
Electronics, if you can find any left, are 10 percent off (the MSRP, at least).
Slim pickings in the electronics department.
A 9-inch Sony digital photo frame on sale for $224. We found it on Amazon for $179.
A PS3 Rock Band bundle. $170.99 on sale at Virgin. At Amazon: $180.49, so a win for Virgin.
The non-HD version 0f Creative's Vado video camera. Virgin: $89.99; Amazon: $79.95.
Just like Circuit City, no refunds. In fact, don't these closeout signs look familiar?
A whopping 10 percent off novelty T-shirts.
Like Circuit City, no shortage of music game accessories. This Wii Rock Band drum kit was $80.99 at both Virgin and Amazon.
For current games, which are rarely discounted, even 10 percent off is a good deal.
So far, we only found one category that was 30 percent off.
A JBL On Stage III iPod dock. Virgin: $152.99; Amazon: $129.95.
Ten percent off Wii nunchuk controllers. Don't all line up at once...
Yes, Virgin always had a small vinyl section, now offered at 20 percent off. But the store's original prices for vinyl were inflated to start with.
Another good deal: get a few bucks off an Apple TV unit, which, like most Apple products, is rarely discounted.
Perhaps the skimpy discounts are keeping crowds away.
Even the outer doors are plastered with going out of business signs.
Complete your Halo 3 action figure collection, at 10 percent off (or just go around the corner to Forbidden Planet).
Another price check: this Fallout 3 collector's edition is $62.99 at Virgin, and $66.95 at Amazon.
Virgin was always known for overpriced DVDs and Blu-ray discs, so 20 percent off isn't much of an incentive.
We finally found something that was 30 percent off: video game hint books.
Even the fixtures are for sale. Although we're not sure what the mysterious "circumstances" that require the 10 percent premium referenced here are.
The last days of the Virgin Megastore. First thing to go: the big light-up letter "V." Read our full report here.
