Take a closer look at the Posh Mobile Memo (pictures)

This 5.9-inch dual-SIM phablet has a great big screen, but only middling hardware. Let's check it out.

The Posh Mobile Memo

The 5.9-inch Posh Mobile Memo is a dual-SIM phablet with a budget price: just $170 unlocked, and currently just $100 on Amazon.

But this is definitely a case of getting what you pay for, as this phone, while large, isn't very good.

Dismal display

Its imperfections start with the display. That 5.9-inch screen is saddled with an 800x480-pixel resolution. To make matters worse, viewing angles are narrow and the display renders muddled, washed-out colors.

A wide phone

At 3.5 inches wide, the Posh Mobile Memo will feel unwieldy in most hands.

I personally prefer larger phones, but as with the BlackBerry Passport, sometimes that width gets in the way.

Despite the size, the Memo actually isn't all that bulky. It's 0.38 inch thick, easily slipping into a (large) pocket.

That said, getting your hand around to the buttons on the side will still prove a challenge, so put that drink down.

A pair of SIM slots

The pair of SIM card slots and the microSD card slot can be found on the rear of the device, after you've peeled off the backplate. While dual-SIM phones haven't really taken off in the US, they could be a real boon for travelers.

Subpar camera

There's a 5-megapixel camera on the rear, but it's not much to write home about. You'll only find grainy, noisy footage here.

Weak speaker

The Memo's tinny, anemic speaker isn't worth the effort -- stick to headphones, or a Bluetooth headset.
