Photos: Sony's new TVs for 2007
While Sony didn't trot out anything earth-shattering in the TV department, its flat-panel and rear-projection LCD TVs have been refreshed for 2007.
One unusual HDTV introduction is the KDF-37H1000 (March, $1,300), an LCD-based rear-projection HDTV with a 37-inch screen. Usually projection sets are much bigger, and with like-size flat-panels costing about the same, we're skeptical about this model's chances.
Sony also announced a new line of 1080p resolution LCD-based rear-projection HDTVs, which have slimmer cabinets than other RPTVs. The KDF-50E3000 (July, price not announced) for example, with a 50-inch screen, measures just 12.6 inches deep.
The bulk of Sony's HDTV announcements concerned flat-panel LCDs, and the company's largest line this year is the KDL-S3000 series. It consists of five models sized from 26 to 46 inches, all with 1,366x768 resolution and some new picture enhancements for this year. They should ship during the spring and summer, but Sony didn't announce pricing.
Sony added a couple of 1080p resolution flat-panel LCDs to its 2007 stable: the KDL-V3000 series, which includes 40- and 46-inch sets. The company touts the new panels' 10-bit color, which should reduce false contouring, and improved backlights.
Sony's step-up XBR moniker graces just one HDTV at the line show, the 32-inch KDL-32XBR4. With all of the company's 2007 picture-affecting extras, namely a 120Hz refresh rate, an improved backlight, and numerous inputs, the XBR4 should be one of the better-performing 32-inch LCDs available when it hits later this spring.
Sony didn't make any official announcements about new SXRD-based rear-projection HDTVs, but it did say that the current KDS-A2000 series will be replaced by the KDS-A2020 series. The only difference between the two is that the newer models, available this March and already detailed on Sony's site, will have black cabinets. Details on successors to the company's 2006 XBR2 lineup were not revealed.
