Photos: Preview of the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show
The Los Angeles Auto Show runs from November 16 through November 25 this year and plays host to 40 world and North American debuts. We've picked up some advance information on these cars and have photos of the highlights for you here. We will cover the show during the advance press preview and give you detailed information on the Car Tech blog.
Nissan's highly anticipated supercar makes its North American debut, following on the heels of its unveiling at the Tokyo auto show last month. The $80,000 GT-R uses carbon fiber and aluminum to keep weight down, and a powerful 3.8-liter twin turbo engine that should give it a 0 to 60 mph time of around 3.5 seconds.
When the restyled Impreza WRX was introduced earlier this year, it flopped, as the car seemed tamed from the previous model's wilder performance. But Subaru gave the new Impreza WRX its STi treatment, which will hopefully restore some of those super performance characteristics.
The new Evo X was actually introduced at this year's Detroit auto show, but it will soon hit showroom floors. And with its arch-competitor, the WRX STi highlighted here, we couldn't help but include it.
As BMW makes its cars bigger and more expensive, it opened up some room at the low end. BMW filled that space a few years ago with the 1-series in Europe. Now the 1-series is coming to the U.S. in the form of the 135i, which should be an impressive performer. BMW's smallest car will use its best engine, the twin turbo 3-liter straight-six.
The M3, the performance version of the 3-series, has always been a favorite of driving enthusiasts. BMW started showing off its newest M3 this year at the Frankfurt auto show. The M3's V-8 engine puts out 420 horsepower, and its carbon fiber roof gives it an excellent power-to-weight ratio of 8.3 lbs per horsepower.
Audi updated its A4 to improve its performance and incorporate some of the latest technologies. One of the most notable changes is the addition of LED parking lights in the headlight enclosures, so people will mistake the A4 for the R8 at night.
Maserati follows up on its launch of the Quattroporte with this performance-tuned Quattroporte Sport GT S. This is a performance luxury coupe that will coddle the driver and offer a thrilling driving experience.
The Spyker brand isn't familiar to most people, but this Dutch company makes some of the most interesting-looking sports luxury cars around. The 400 horsepower C8 LaViolette is festooned with airscoops. But these adornments aren't just for looks, as it will hit 62 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Following in the footsteps of the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, Mazda comes out with its Tribute HEV, which stands for Hybrid Electric Vehicle. This little SUV uses the same power train as the Escape Hybrid and the Mariner Hybrid.
Along with restyling the Malibu for 2008, Chevrolet is offering a hybrid version, a popular power train for the Los Angeles area. The Malibu uses the same mild hybrid system GM launched in the Saturn Aura and Vue.
Nissan hasn't released details of the new Murano, but it will show off this updated version at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Considering what we've seen from Nissan lately, we expect the Murano to offer some excellent tech options.
