Check out Bang & Olufsen's new motorised, 4K TV (pictures)

The Bang & Olufsen BeoVision Avant is a 55-inch TV with 4K resolution and a fancy motorised stand. The downside? A ludicrous price tag.

If your TV is only HD and doesn't dance around your living room, it's just not cool. Bang & Olufsen's new BeoVision Avant puts a 4K display on a motorised stand, letting it point different directions, depending on where you're sitting.

The Avant is on sale from today in B&O and other high-end AV stores in the UK, US, Australia and various other countries. I went in for a hands on at its London launch event.

The TV alone will set you back £5,995 (around $10,160 or AU$10,830), while the motorised stand is a whopping £1,195 (around $2,030 or AU$2,160) extra. Oof.

Although B&O is known for some pretty whacky designs, the TV itself looks pretty standard.

It has a 55-inch display with an aluminium surround.

At 96mm thick, it's pretty chunky, which might be a problem if you're hoping to wall-mount it.

All the ports are neatly tucked away behind these panels, making the back of the TV look nice and neat. Of course, if you keep your TV in the corner of your room against a wall, that really doesn't matter.

The speakers descend from the bottom of the TV when it's turned on.

It has an attractive metal surround, but that doesn't stop it being rather thick.

That chap sat on top is an ambient light sensor which allows the TV to automatically adjust colour balance, depending on the lighting in your room.

The remote is a long, slender metal stick.

It's machined from a solid block of metal.

Unless you have a giant, open-plan house with a TV in the middle, I'm not sure how important it is to have an aesthetically pleasing back.

As well as a host of HDMI ports, there's space for you to mount an Apple TV unit inside.

Here's that pricey stand. The TV moves around it when it's powered on.

A more usual tabletop stand is available too. A non-motorised version will set you back around £600 (roughly $1,000 or AU$1,080).

Or you can mount it to your wall.

The speakers have eight separate drivers, each with its own amplifier.

Here they are, all uncovered. Fancy!

They seemed to pump out a decent sound, although you could opt for a cheaper 4K telly and spend the rest on a really good set of cinematic surround sound speakers.
