A sneak peek at the new Android Market

We're receiving more tips as we approach the Motorola Android event on September 10. An Android Atlas reader with access to the Motorola Sholes sent in pictures that show off the new look for Android Market. The tip is unconfirmed, but based on the information that was provided, I'd say the screenshots are real. Please keep in mind that these reflect a work in progress and the final look could change.

The pictures below reveal an updated user interface. The new Market has buttons for Top Paid, Top Free, and Just In. There's also a search button in the upper corner of the screen. Most of these features were previously available, but were buried in the menu system. The top level listing also gives a preview of which apps are in each category.

The update appears to be mainly a face-lift, so there's no word on additional features. The tipster noted, however, that this version of the Market was available in a Donut build of Android. The Motorola Sholes will ship with Eclair, so we should see this Market update on other Android phones before Sholes launches later this year.

Android Market is getting a major overhaul. Filters for paid and free have been moved to the main screen.

I would love to see a bookmarking feature on the Market. There are many times I don't want to download an app when I first see it, but if I could bookmark it, I would come back to it later. It's not enough to bookmark it on Cyrket.com - that's a third party and a hassle.

I'd also like to see a way to remove apps from the My Downloads list when I've uninstalled them, or would like to remove them. I have my apps installed to SD thanks to the easy-to-use Cyanogen ROM's, so I have gone through dozens of apps trying them out.

On my G1 (Cyanogen 4.0.4) the uninstalled apps in My Downloads are gone the next time I start up the Market. Must be a bug?

Cupcake, Donut, Eclair...sounds like a load of FAT to me.

Don't mind me; I'm not feeling much love for the G1 lately. This replacement G1 T-Mo sent me after my original G1's WiFi died is a power HOG. It's like Cupcake never even happened. This thing drains through my batteries like the end of days is happening this afternoon.

Oh, on topic: I like the look of the facelift, but I still want a way to parse via highest rated and, more importantly, alphabetical order. I'd also like it better if the Entertainment category were better defined (split up into subgroups or, gasp, more defined categories).

awesome! but why couldn't they have just sent in pictures of the sholes itself? or just zoomed out a little? i know i'd much rather see that

hangon, i just realized these screenshots have the same height/width ratio as the 320x480 screens that all other android phones have, but the pics and specs of the sholes have had a more elongated 480x854 screen. Does this mean simply that the person taking the pic isn't actually using the sholes? or more excitingly does it mean the sholes has undergone a significant redesign since the last info leaked out?
if it's the latter then hopefully they havent made the screen smaller but hopefully they have made the phone sexier

The Sholes has a 3.7 in wide screen. I resized the photos myself to 320x480.

oh damn, haha they don't look resized and i didn't think it would be worth the effort to resize them so i got excited that it was an all new sholes or something, but nope
i've been wondering how they're gonna deal with the diff resolution though, is that it then? they just stretch everything out
