What's interesting about your problem is I was having the exact same issue, but I was able to fix my problem after speaking with Tech support and them reporting other users having the same problem because if their phones did not receive the proper 4 or 5 hours of initial charge.
Basically, I followed tech supports suggestions and trickle charge my Pre using a USB connection on my Mac. This process is supposed to slow charge the unit for two hours and then after that plug the unit back into the wall jack USB adapter and the problem goes away.
Thankfully for me the problem went away after following tech supports suggestions, but I'll keep Tomms84 suggestion above and a sheet of paper handy just in case it comes back.
