The Buzz Report
You just paid too much for your TouchpadHP bails on WebOS and PC's, Google marries Motorola for her dowry, fake phone calls to the rescue, and the singing head wants to eat you.
Welcome to the buzz report I'm Brian Cooley in for Molly Wood who's out today exchanging -- Smartphone for a different one. -- the third time. This week. This time around HP becomes a defense contractor Google -- the Droid maker and -- Michael cores we just hired him as a consultant they like. -- assert and the -- look really got to go. The gadget of the week is. Sees something -- hideous to live and too crafty to die. A robot head that can read music when it's cold did camera eyes and OCR -- And then sync it to use it it sings the way -- courts -- Taiwan also has facial movements so it can interpret the message of the song -- great. I'm sure it works really well as long as the message is always -- -- -- use it like -- more readily access your -- with my T. The inventors at a university in Taiwan hope. That can go into production replacing receptionists. In some businesses in China very soon. And they said nothing good -- -- economy. Now -- it. Better right we done playing dress up -- -- -- -- -- and they did with the bomb may drop this week pulling the plug on webos. PCs boom. Specifically they are ceasing development of the webos -- and shopping around -- personal computer division this it will take it off their hands. Now they are keeping the imaging division because. -- how much they make off -- -- you pay for it. The webos devices suffered from basically -- hardware. The -- phone was. -- piece of crap the veer too easy to choke and the touchpad well as -- Donald bell said it was only lacking in performance. Design and features. Without great hardware consumers don't get interest and without consumers developers don't get it. As for the PC's latest numbers tell the story. Apple has convincingly pulled ahead of HP's mobile computer market -- that's laptops netbooks and tablets. Apple did it mostly on the back of tablets iPad sales. In other words if you want playing hard in the mobile space today you want playing in -- case either. But HP can go out with its head held high the touchpad -- on the market 49 days one longer -- -- Microsoft -- And on. Yes Mike. Really. Makes -- look what -- how low. Back -- and it. This week got off without bang as Google paid twelve and a half billion bucks that's even a big check for them to buy Motorola mobility. Well known for its Droid Smartphones and at one time the big dog in cell phones would start -- RAZR. But if you think Google at all -- -- -- they can slap their name on those brick like Droid handsets think again. This is mostly about getting their hands on some 24000. Current and pending patents that Motorola phones. That allows Google to really step up their patent pissing match with Apple in particular. The other part of this to watch is what it means to Google TV which has been having this long slowed near death experience. So while everyone's -- froth over the phone piece of this remember that Motorola is also pretty much the top set top box maker these days. Likely the one you have connected to your TV right now. And you probably heard of San Francisco's Bart transit system shut down cell phone service in -- underground stations in the past week. This is during a protest in the idea was to curtail protesters ability to mobilize. Using their mobile and -- and shut down the transit -- Well that's of course had -- -- net effect of leaving hundreds of other commuters suddenly without a signal down their underground -- wanted to -- things. Either the big one just hid upstairs or someone's which -- ATM -- -- Some folks are outraged that the US transit system used the same basic tactic that it copies team vote was a good idea when things got -- -- And plenty of commuters -- protesters trying to shut down transit stations where the problem. By late new research tells us this week that if you've got a cell phone you probably also need a therapist. The new pew research survey data says 30% of people eighteen to 29. Have fate being on their phone to avoid talking to someone nearby or approaching them. So we get this right. Something airport of the time that someone 130 is on the bus with -- -- their on the air flow over sharing in their outdoor voice about the sexual position that made them squeak last night. That's an act. Just talk to -- about the latter not that bad. I'm Brian Cooley Molly Wood is back in next week thanks for watching the buzz report.
