Windows 11: Hands-on with an early build

Services & Software
Speaker 1: Windows 11, took another step closer to reality today with Microsoft's release of the first windows 11 insider preview build, we're taking a hands on look at some of the biggest new features in this early preview of windows 11. Let's check it out. Speaker 1: Windows 11 will be free to download for those already on windows 10 long as your device is compatible. We don't have an exact release date yet, but it looks like it could be as early as October. If you just can't wait until then you can join the windows insider program for free to [00:00:30] try out this early build of windows 11. One thing to know is that you should never download early versions like this on your main device, only on a tester device, because there will be bugs. Make sure you check out C nets, how it all channel, where we'll walk you through exactly how to get the preview and what to watch out for. Once you have the preview build up on your test machine. Here are some of the best new features you can find. First, you'll get a glimpse of the brand new interface, which looks a lot more sleek and more Mac like than windows 10. Speaker 1: The start button is now in the middle of the task bar. At the bottom of the screen, you can pin apps [00:01:00] to the start menu for easy X, NC recommended apps for you, including files you recently worked on across different devices. You'll also find new themes for light and dark mode to change your theme, right? Click on your desktop and choose personalize. Another new feature is widgets live icons that can give you added glance information about news, sports, weather, traffic, just about anything, click on the way widgets icon on the task bar or hit win. Plus w on your keyboard and your widgets slide out from the left over your desktop. You can totally customize [00:01:30] widgets based on what you like and add or remove them and resize them. Windows 11 also added a bunch of new features to make multitasking much easier. Say you're researching a trip and you have a group of apps or websites open all related to that cert with a feature called snap layouts, you can hover your mouse over a windows maximize button and choose a layout that you like then click on a zone to snap that window into place. Speaker 1: So you can keep all of that information nicely organized on your screen. Then you can easily minimize or maximize the whole snap group at once from the task bar. Another [00:02:00] great feature that we have been hoping for in windows 11 was easier. A virtual desktop creation, and luckily Microsoft delivered. You can create a new desktop for anything personal use, work gaming and customize the background. If you scroll over task view in the task bar or hit win plus tab, you'll see all of your existing desktops that you can toggle between, or you can create a new one. Windows 11 also marks the long of a new Microsoft store, which you can see in this early preview build. You can see the new design right now and in the coming months, you'll [00:02:30] also see a lot of new features, including the ability to run Android apps on windows, through the Amazon app store. Finally, the settings page gets a redesign and windows 11. Again, making it look more clean and easy to navigate that menu on the left will stay with you as you move the between pages in case you need to go back. Just a note that we did run into a few issues as we got this windows insider preview build set up, which was to be expected. We had a little bit of trouble logging in at first because the password box wasn't showing up in the UI. And then when we were working with snap layouts, Speaker 2: We needed to restart it [00:03:00] for those to actually show up in our window. Uh, there were also a few graphical glitches here and there as we were navigating the interface again, nothing major. And this makes sense is this is a very early preview version and it's a little buggy. The build also doesn't include features like Microsoft teams integration or Android apps just yet overall using this early preview build was a positive experience. It is a little bit buggy like I mentioned, but I think you can see the promise that some of these new features are going to bring, especially the multiple virtual desktops and the snap groups and snap layouts, and overall windows [00:03:30] 11 is not a total overhaul of windows 10 by any means. But I think windows 10 users will be happy with some of these upgrades and nice new features that they're gonna get there. You have bit a hands on look at some of the biggest features that you're going to find in the first preview build of windows 11. There's certainly much more where all of this comes from as we look ahead to the July public beta and the fall of general release. So make sure you subscribe to CNET to check out all of our windows 11 coverage.
