What to expect from Star Trek: Discovery Season 4

TV & Movies
Speaker 1: The last season discovery jumped into a future where everything was disconnected and the Federation was greatly diminished. So what can we expect from season four? Speaker 2: Uh, well, uh, by the end of season three, things had started to come back together again, I think, uh, you can expect to see that continue into season four, even as there's, uh, a new threat. Um, certainly the Federation, [00:00:30] uh, was, uh, in a better place at the end of season three. Not, not as solid as, uh, one would like, so I think we're gonna continue that, uh, journey with the Federation itself and then, uh, continue the, the journey of each of our characters and, uh, exploring where they go and how they change over the course of this season with, um, the, the anomaly that's, uh, coming their Speaker 1: Way. Yeah. I know you can't say that much, but what can you tell us about this mysterious anomaly that's been teased in the trailer that Speaker 3: Is so mysterious. [00:01:00] It's very D and it's really seriously speaking. It's a, it's a lovely, um, it symbolizes, you know, something, something bigger, right? It symbolizes this, uh, this idea of uncertainty. Um, and I, I really applaud, uh, Michelle and the writers for infusing. Um, a bit of the experience the world is having collectively with this pandemic into the story. Um, I think [00:01:30] that's a responsibility of story and I think they took it with, I think they were very courageous to get gentle, uh, with it. Um, and you see these people having to who not just come together and solve the problem, but, but, but also figure out who, who they are and who they are to each other in a time of such great uncertainty. Like the one we're living in Speaker 1: And, and Michael Burnham is finally in the captain's chair at the helm. Seems like it's been a [00:02:00] long time way. I'm curious how this changes, the dynamic, the, Speaker 3: Um, there's there's, um, there's still a lot to learn, um, as, as captain and I, I love that we got Burnham in that chair at exactly the time that we did, uh, because from the very beginning, I always knew that this was a journey to the chair. Uh, but you know, we always knew that that's where we were headed. And so I really love of, um, the way it played out, because I, I feel that there was such, there can be such [00:02:30] ownership of the chair because we earned it. Um, and you see this person growing and growing and changing and growing. And so when I sit in that chair is Burnham, you know, that I'm ready for it. Speaker 4: I think like, hopefully we'll continue. You subverting your expectations and not getting too comfortable. Amen. Because I think it was a, I don't know, I felt like it was a really powerful move of our show to just go for it in the future, commit to that choice and having to live with the consequences has been really good for the show and all its characters. So I think [00:03:00] more of that will be the case. Um, but we are also in a really good place right now where our ship makes sense and is helpful and can be of service. And so we're definitely like, obviously staying within this spot in time and space, but, uh, we do get to be right there on the edge of discovery. Um, and, and, um, we get to benefit from so much newness by having jump forward into the future that way. Speaker 1: So star Trek has always held a mirror up to the society [00:03:30] and between the pandemic misinformation and just everything else going on right now, there's, there's plenty to draw from. So I'm curious what issues and how star Trek will tackle some of these issues in season four, Speaker 2: When we started, um, writing the season and throughout the shooting of the season, of course we were, and still are in the midst of a pandemic. And so when we were looking at it, we were looking at, what do we feel? What do we feel collectively? What is the emotional experience that we're all having? Because of this thing that is, is happening globally. Uh, [00:04:00] Siqua mentioned uncertainty, which is a huge theme for our season, um, the unknown and dealing with the unknown. And how do you figure things out and how do you deal with something that affects, um, uh, in the world of our story Federation and non Federation equally, uh, in, in our world, uh, with all the many caveats that I won't go into right now, point being we wanna to, uh, explore all of that and the storytelling, which is a very Trek thing is, is to look at what's happening in the world. And then how can we, uh, tell that in story and explore that through our characters? Speaker 5: [00:04:30] I think that the, the, this big anomaly is, is very much a direct response of the writer sitting in the room, saying we're living through this time where there's this bananas thing happening. That's affecting the world out of nowhere, in such a profound way. And so this is one of the ways that they wanted to explore that and what it does to a whole order and system system of order of things, and how do people respond and how do scientists come together to, and, and politicians and, you know, worlds plan galaxies [00:05:00] come together to try to tackle something that is, feels so UN there's no way in, there's no way to understand first, you have to even understand what's happening. So I think that was the writers very directly doing that. And then I think even within that, once there's certain, there are certain pivot points about how do you respond. If you learn certain pieces of information, you might not have the whole picture, but you have to sometimes make a choice and that might make these other dominoes fall. Like, I think all of that is so much on the minds of people around the Speaker 6: World. Yeah. And interesting. A lot of the like blockades [00:05:30] and things that stop progress of are figuring this, this anomaly out, like it's been in real life for the past year and a half, almost two years are like deep rooted emotional things. Um, which, you know, we're often not really pushed to talk about which in star Trek we are. Speaker 7: I mean, it would be so much easier, right. If we all dealt with uncertainty and anxiety in the same way, and the problem is is that everybody D deals with it differently. Some people want to freeze [00:06:00] and others want to run. And, you know, every, everyone has a different response to when things get bad, but we need, you know, what, what needs to happen is that we all collectively come to a, a decision as to what to do and how, how to save each other. Um, and I guess this season is about, will we really do that? Will we all be able to get beyond our own personal needs in order to, um, create the solution for [00:06:30] the Speaker 1: Whole, uh, and David, I wanted to ask about your character. Cause Cleveland was a bit of an outsider last season when he was introduced. And I'm curious if that room remains the same or we'll see him in then another ill fitting uniform this season, Speaker 4: I thought Speaker 8: It fit. It was I'm convinced to this day. Yeah. Cause when I did the costume fitting, it felt okay. And I'm convinced, gosh, Phillips who's our costume designer. Um, she, I think she brought the stitching [00:07:00] in a little bit and made it a bit more snug. There was no acting required during that scene, cuz it was tight as hell a digress. Um, uh, during the season, I think it's very important for Cleveland Booker to keep his autonomy. Um, it's what he's used to, it's his north star. And I think it's the very thing that allows him to always percent of self, no matter where, where he is, but um, that school of thinking gets challenged and he's humbled to consider other options. It'll be really interesting to see how he [00:07:30] embraces this new family, especially because Michael Burnham has been speaking to Cleveland Booker in season three by the benefits of being part of something bigger than yourself and being part of a family. But, um, we will see even a book having no choice, but to take that advice Speaker 1: And, and Mary, uh, you know, we've all watched TIL's characters slowly embrace moral leadership responsibilities over the course of a couple seasons. I'm curious how the, that evolve in [00:08:00] season four. Speaker 4: Yeah. I think she's getting like closer and closer to the things she always dreamed of. And uh, that's raising more and more questions about what she's doing, how she'll do it, what she really wants, why she really wants it, all those questions come to play. Um, because she's kind of finally getting within spitting distance of this great dream of her life. So I think that's kind of, that will shape the season for her. And then yeah, the experiences definitely at the end [00:08:30] of season three, having had that opportunity to be acting CAPTA and then having lost the ship, really knowing what the price of leadership can be, having intimately experienced that, um, will maybe maybe shape, uh, how she sees herself and how she sees her future. Speaker 8: What I found really interesting about this season is how collectively this group of people have to deal with trauma from a primary source [00:09:00] or secondary source. Um, well it's no secret. The word people have used during this period of time is how challenging these circumstances have been, you know, and mental health has been affected. And, um, it it's challenged us in a way that we were never prepared for. And it feels like in season four you will see every character having to dig a bit deeper than they're comfortable with, to navigate being in this space. Cuz they have no other choice.
