What is the best BMW M car on the road today?
[NOISE]
[MUSIC]
This is Genesis.
It's the first mass-produced proper m-car.
Yes, there were others with m budgets before.
But the E30 and 3's where it all really We started the affordable road missile, the racecar for the common man.
It's very pretty in a boxy way and unfortunately worth a chuffing fortune nowadays so the common man can't get away with one on the regular.
However, BMW makes more M cars now than ever before.
[MUSIC]
BMW's M division is a wonderful, wonderful thing.
I picture it as a giant white room full of over-excited German engineers eking as many horses as many engines.
As they possibly can.
Not letting one tiny little pony go missing.
Today, I have three of the latest M cars on the market and an MC track to play with.
So it's time to find out which is best.
You see, the E30's legacy is a big one.
Enthusiasts know what they are, most don't.
They assume you're in an old BMW and leave you be.
Modern name cars are kind of like that.
They look like Porsche German cars but sounds rather different from your dad's 2.0 liter diesel.
And I'm pretty sure dad's car doesn't have four exhausts.
[SOUND] [SOUND] They're certainly unsubtle.
They're noisy and aggressive yet still restrained when you want them to be.
And this is the first of today's pick.
The M2.
Now, the inside is a little less angry than the outside.
But out there there's vents and angles and vengeance and everything all over the place.
And basically it's actually quite a small car, it's actually bigger Very, very quick, and it feels it too, [INAUDIBLE] at all.
You just pin your foot any gear you want, and off you go.
We're now doing 90 miles an hour, we started about 40.
Now this one's got a duel flux transmission which means, it might not be quite as engaging as the manuals, but it means you can switch gears at a It'll be quicker and you don't have to take your hands off the wheel, which is good.
It's a proper driver's car this, because it's just got that balance and everything.
It's not hard to drive, but at the same time it's very rewarding if you drive it hard.
All the components, they're just bang on.
The only problem is, these Things are getting so quick that you can't really play with them properly on the road, unless you want a risk of [UNKNOWN].
But here, you can so much fun here.
The limits on this they're not the hardest to find, they're so easy to play with.
God, it goes round corners quickly.
[LAUGH]
Every time I go round a certain corner round here, my face just gets a little bit further out each time.
[SOUND]
The M2 is a truly brilliant car.
One that'll likely go down as one of the greats.
Really small, quick, nimble and hilarious fun.
You can't really Go wrong with it.
However, it's time for a slightly bigger fish, the M4 GTS.
[SOUND] Only slightly bigger was perhaps a foolish thing to say.
What I meant to say was a lot Cools intake temperatures and allows for more boost.
Hence, the 911 GT3 RS troubling power figure.
It's lighter than a standard car, has no rear seat, has a roll cage, OEM wheels, a titanium exhaust and a wing so large, it could be considered actually quite rude
It'll hit 62 from rest in 3.8 seconds, and its top speed is 190 miles an hour, so it's fast.
It's also nearly three times the cost of [INAUDIBLE] [NOISE].
But while it seems like you get less for your money, well, you don't.
Alongside the extra power is adjustable suspension and dampers, tweaked anti-roll bars, and settled electrics.
This isn't a car for a quick blast every now and then.
This is a car born to live on the track.
It's a good thing we have one really because well, there's no real world practicality to it.
I mean, yeah, there's a boot and there's a screen and stuff, but it runs hard and it rides so fast.
It's noisy.
There are no cubbyholes bar a couple of cup holders Pounds, to a racer.
Cuz it's here, where this thing really gets to shine.
My God, it's so fast.
It just grips, where it's lesser stable mates are all about having a bit of skidding fun.
Yeah!
This will go!
But, this just wants to grip.
This Touring car, more than anything else, it's absolutely insane.
There is that wonderful linearity that you get with an m-car, but you have to be going just that little bit faster, in order to make it have a little bit as a play around.
[NOISE] The steering is so heavy, in comparison to the others.
It's really heavy.
This is basically the way for its application.
Because of the suspension Is also super stiff.
It works.
Again, it feels like a racing car.
Because that's basically what this thing is.
[INAUDIBLE] It sounds incredible.
It sings.
It's a beautiful, beautiful noise.
Fantastic track car, Brilliant It's a brilliant car in general.
But compared to the others, this is [UNKNOWN].
It would be rude to ignore the car the GTS is based on so let's not.
Meet the M4.
[NOISE] First.
That's a bit of a step up from the M2 as well.
0 to 62 takes 4.1 seconds and it will crack 155 if you're feeling brave.
There are a few criticisms laid out against it, mostly the pumped in engine noise, but it sounds pretty entertaining from the inside, so shh.
It's good-looking and quick.
So, this is pretty much The go to M car for most people.
Because it used to be the M3 and then it was the M3 coupe because it was the fast, good looking one.
And then MW did the whole name split thing, so this is the M car du jour.
The one that people think, M car, well they think M3, then they go, no then the coupe, I'll have the M4.
Now there's the nitty gritty, the speed 4.1 to 62 is not slow.
At all and it feels, feels mighty quick, this thing, it really does.
[UNKNOWN] at 406 pounds.
It's such a leap over the old V8 car.
I know [UNKNOWN] nature and what have you but boy, so much torque here.
For the super hardcore, the M4 is big, fast, and has plenty of plus points for the might be taking it home with a big grin on my face.
However, the smallest M car was the most usable and entertaining by far margin.
Each of them, however, showed just how far And each, doesn't crowd.
