Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 47 minutes of live gameplay

[MUSIC] [INAUDIBLE] Hello, welcome to CNET live. We are live playing MarioKart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch. I've got my little switch controller here. It's out today for the Nintendo Switch. And we just wanna show you guys a little bit of what this game is like, especially with my favorite feature of it, four player local multiplayer. Joining me, to my left, Mike, Joe, and Alfred. We are going to rock this game. So hard, you're gonna be walking funny the rest of the day watching us play. [LAUGH] That was weird. That was weird Jeff. All right, let's get going. Feel free to reach out with questions. The game just came out today, so odds are you don't have it. We're here to help To educate, to learn new scenarios [INAUDIBLE] 100 Eight, so that you so that you get a good idea of what you are getting into if you decide to go out and buy this [INAUDIBLE] Obviously Mario [INAUDIBLE] first came out on we you But nobody bought we you [LAUGH] So, what that's You dont even have one in gear I can't even argue that, I didnt even It's okay. Considering the success that we ask it. It's okay. The switch is doing phenomenally. Look sometimes you make mistakes. Mistakes were made, but what Nintendo did do good on is they brought MarioKart 8 back from the switch should as they should have. Sure. people could play it. All picking the characters that were on the we use version Why are you so boring. Look at all these new characters and you're picking all the same but one. So, I'm not super familiar with what's new. Wait, how did you do that? How did you pick different versions? Can you guys show me what else- A submenu came up. Can you show me what other characters are new for the Switch version? I think the entire bottom row is new. I'm gonna be Link, obviously. I don't know if you should drive with a sword like that. Inkling boy and girl are definitely new for this version. I think everything else is DLC from the last version, including the Link, the Animal Crossing characters, Pink Gold Peach, whose background I am still trying to figure out.>> What did you call me?>> Did you pick the Pink Gold Peach?>> No, I picked Link.>> I played he during my practice rounds earlier. So you practiced this morning? Yeah. Can we all take a second to take a look at the wheels on my go-cart? Okay how would this be a good idea to put those kind of little baby skateboard wheels on my go-cart? I didn't get a chance. What is the villagers like custom part, is it the city tripper from animal crossing? Yeah it looks like a little scooter around the village This looks like a terrible racer. I would never race in that. I'm going to go standard and be boring. Okay, here we go. Let's go. Here we go. Let's pick a good circuit here guys. Any suggestions Michael? Nothing you've played before. Actually we've already played everything. I've practiced on every round. If you could play something that Michael is terribly unfamiliar with I'm just gonna go Okay here we go. So,>> I mean this is one of the new ones, isn't it?>> All the DLC from the WII-U version, is included in this deluxe version of Mario Cart 8, which includes I want to say 16 courses is that right mike?>> There is 4 per thing and there is 28 maybe? I can never time that right to get the boost right before [CROSSTALK] I was really good on the Gameboy Advance. That's a regional dialect thing I personally know people name Mare-eo, and if I called them Mario, they would step on my face. So, Like a Gumba. Yeah, Exactly. Well, I play Diddy Kong Racing and CTR and all that, but I would always go back to Mu-reo [CROSSTALK] Say Mario or Mario, that's moron. I love Marie O. And the one that really didn't make sense was like Sega All Star Racing. Because like Sonic drove a car. [CROSSTALK] Yeah, like, he's ast enough. Get the hell- Yeah, [INAUDIBLE]. That's ridiculous. That's like him getting on a bike. What is that? You know what was really fun, though? What's it called? Kirby Air Ride. I don't think I've ever played that. That was like one of the few racing games, like- That was the one where you hit [UNKNOWN] race the whole time, right? Yeah, and you were like on a star. You were [INAUDIBLE] on the star. That zero is also really [INAUDIBLE] This is [UNKNOWN] from here. Yeah, at zero they were trying to be serious. Wipeout. Is this, who's in front of me dodging shells like a pro? I can't believe I've made it through Rainbow Road and I fell once. I like that there are skid marks on the tracks, I don't [INAUDIBLE] that. On Rainbow Road, too. There definitely was. I definitely remember blood on the tracks. [INAUDIBLE] I am so bad. No chance self driving cars. Yeah what is Mario kart going to do? That's what we turned off, by the way there is a guided assist steering that we turned off before the race because it was getting in the way. Getting in the way of you winning. Yeah we know what you mean. Mike. It's very good if you give the game to four year olds who maybe have a hard time staying on the track. Or Jeff. [LAUGH] [LAUGH] Yeah I feel like we should turn that feature on. [BLANK_AUDIO] I am not very good at this game. I'm Surprisingly okay. [LAUGH] My God, somebody's done already? We turned off steering wheel assist because it was To me, painful, maybe everybody else needs to turn it on. I don't know. I'm doing pretty good without it, so. [UNKNOWN] what would I do with a pro controller? I think everyone, look at how tiny this thing is. Yeah, my hands are swallowing the thing, like. Yeah, you got the big old bear claws. [LAUGH] [INAUDIBLE] stands for wanting more [INAUDIBLE]. Maybe this summer we go. I just came to play Mario Kart. I didn't know we were live streaming. Sorry. I'm like my My God, so dangerous. The weird thing is when I interviewed Reggie, he said we aren't doing friend codes in the online version this time and here we are. He said that? He said that! I have the recording if you want to listen to it. I think you should write a story. We wrote a story when it came out. No, but like, a follow up. LIke that, they're like hey. Maybe they'll do it when they're online services [INAUDIBLE] That's what I'm thinking but it's very frustrating like why would they do that? I don't know I think Nintendo through all these years as really not grasped. The weird thing about that in that exact same interview they also talked about how Wow. Whoever hit me, that was, but the thing is that, in that same interview, it also talked about how they were going to be making more Nintendo, like the NES Classic. And we all know how that turned out. [BLANK_AUDIO] I think what was upsetting to me is that if I owned two switches, I'd have to have two copies of the game. I couldn't- Why you own two [UNKNOWN] I'm just saying if- That's a very good question. If by chance you own it. Because the kids can't share. If you have two kids and one wants one, the other one wants the other. Yeah, that's the problem with the Switch being both a portable and a home console. Basically like having two iPads. Yeah, hell yeah. Even just using this with the adapter. I'm thinking about getting one eventually, but it is a higher price. To play Zelda, it's smooth. I mean I know you probably played it already. I did okay with the initial setup, but I do know at some point I want pro controller. Yeah. And there's a third party controller that looks like the prop controller for 30 bucks. How much is the pro controller add on? [INAUDIBLE] So that's the magic question there, do you buy the pro controller or do you buy two more joy cons so have more player action? They're very close in price. I think you buy the pro. You guys are all about yourselves. You don't care about anybody that comes into the house. No. Dude, you always gave your friend that junky third party controller anyway. You were that guy? I wasn't that guy. I always had good controllers. Guys Irene in the chat wants to know how only multi-player is. Did you play it much when you were playing it last week? Yeah, are you talking about this game? Yeah, is it easy to set up online multi-player for this game? So the game only launched today and the multiplayer online before that was really just sort of organized groups. Mm-hm. So I can't really comment on my- That was really easy to set up. And it seems easy to set up, judging from the menu system that went up. But I haven't yet played it online With real interaction people video. I played online a little bit this morning. You play online too? Dude what did you not sleep last night? I was excited about this game. It was easy to do random matches but I don't know how to set up matches with friends yet. Yeah I mean there's almost no way. We can do that after we All right, blue shell let's go! Is there a difference between playing with the left and the right. Well one has the button further away and one has the joystick in the middle. Wait did that blue shell miss you? I think once you start holding it you get used to it, in general your hands are closer together than usual. By it. Well I think the value is there. I mean, again, nobody played Mario Kart 8 so it's probably new to you. There are probably a lot of Wii U games coming to Switch also. Mm-hm. And again- If you're gonna do that just get the DS version. Yeah, if that's the reason you're buying- Yeah! Finally. You won? Yeah. I was like that close. [LAUGH] You see the difference between me I did poopy! It took a track no one played, well you guys played, I never played this track. It took a track that Michael didn't play for for me to win. [LAUGH] Yeah I don't think anyone- [UNKNOWN] Necessarily re-buy this, unless playing it on the go is what you want. Is that because a difference with the tablet part of it? Right. And it performs really well on the go. I have to say this is pretty smooth for four player actually. Yeah. I don't see much lag or anything. It definitely dips in terms of frame rate but it's- But it's nothing more, it doesn't affect my gameplay. Yeah actually that's what it is. That's why I'm not getting First. Yes. Totally frame rate drops. [LAUGH] I shot him, my ping! My ping- If you look on- I have a lower ping! The frames that were dropped, in those frames I'm in 1st place. [LAUGH] Drift king, baby!
