Velocity Micro Raptor Z90
Hi, I'm Rick Brown.
I'm here for CNET.com.
Today we're gonna take a look at the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90.
So this is a high end $5,000 game in PC.
It comes with Intel's brand new Core S7 3930K CPU.
It's a 6 quartz chip that normally ships at 3.2 Giga hertz with Velocity Micro's over (??) to 4.7.
That makes this system very fast in multi trade apps and it's suitable for gaming as well as digital content creation.
So the Z90 is one of Velocity's larger cases and we'd like to look at it.
It's nice and sturdy, it's very clean, peel front the front panel here, you'll see there's a Blue Ray drive as well as an SD card reader.
Turn the system on it's side, you can see the nice transparent side panel, that's a good touch for people that like to show off a high end hardware gamers in particular.
Now at the back you get a view of the ports and a brand new ASUS motherboard using Intel's new X79 chip set.
You can see there's all kinds of connectivity options pretty much everything you'd want in a modern PC.
You get 7.1 analog audio, digital audio, 6 USB 2.0 ports, 4 USB 3 ports which is great.
A couple of digital audio outputs as well as power D set.
Down here in the para-graphic cards, you get 4 TV I output as well as 2 mini HD (my outs?).
There's also a wireless networking card here and you could see the antenna screwed on the back.
Now Velocity Micro is 1 of our favorite systems though because it builds such clean systems and this is no exception.
You can see there's a liquid cooling rig here going down to the Core S7 chip down here of the motherboard.
And new to this this new chip set is the ability to support up to 8 sticks of memory, in this case quad channel memory.
In this system, there's 16 Gigs of DVR3 1600 megahertz RAM between 4 memory sticks.
You can see the sticks here, there's 2 more underneath the cooler here and there's also room to add 4 more sticks of your own later on if you want.
For the graphics card Velocity Micro included two G4 GTX 5800 cards among the fastest out there and make the system able to play pretty much any game you can throw at it at very high resolution and detail settings.
Now technically, this is the most important for graphic cards but with the wireless card included, that option is pretty much cut off.
You do get a spare PCX press slide inside so you could add say a sound card or some other feature if you wanted to.
And that's a good Velocity Micro card.
For it's hard drive design, you get two SSD's here for fast boot and data loading and up here you got a 2 terabyte hard drive for mass storage.
We also like the Velocity's pre-installed power and data connection behind these 2 hard drive slots.
It makes it easy to add hard drive post purchase.
So all in all, this is a fine high end performance system.
Our only reservation comes with the CPU.
Now 6 Core CPU may provide great multi threat performance, but this is also an expensive chip and an expensive motherboard.
Intel's previous generation Core S7 2600 K chip has 4 Cores, goes pretty much as fast in games and general applications.
So overall this is kind of a mix system and we recommend to gamers that also need fast multi thread CPU performance.
So I'm Rick Brown, this is the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90.
