Usain Bolt takes on CNET's text messaging speed challenge
What's up C-net Nation?
It's CES 2018, live in Las Vegas.
I'm Brian Tong.
Hey, what's up, man?
You're probably gonna recognize the fastest man alive, Mr. Usain Bolt.
What's up, man?
Thanks for coming out.
Happy to be here.
Thank you so much for coming out to the C-Net stage.
First of all, I know you pretty much just got in here from the Bahamas.
Tell me a little bit about the weather there versus here right now.
The weather is the same thing, pretty much.
The trough from From the states is just skating through the Caribbean right now.
It's kind of chilly, but it's the Caribbean, so it's still awesome.
Always, always it is.
Is this your first CES?
Yeah, this is actually my first CES.
Have you had a chance to walk around a little bit?
Just got here.
Came straight here.
So a little bit later I'm gonna walk around and see what's going on cuz all my friends keep saying you need to walk around and see what's happening.
So I'm gonna check it out.
Well, you got a look at what's, you saw Sophia that robot.
What were your first gut instincts about that man?
It's kind of freaky.
It was cool.
It was cool, but it was kind of freaky that she understood what was going on.
So I'm just watching, we all watch iRobot, so we have to watch out.
Now you're also here to talk about the Phillps Base Plus line.
We wanted to talk to you a little bit about that, and then just talk about a whole bunch of other things.
What are you here for to represent and talk about?
For me, I'm just trying to let people know what I'm about.
Anybody knows me knows I'm all about music.
And I mean I'm all music, I'm a DJ, with track and field I miss the music all the time.
Music is a part of me so I have to have the best sounds at all times, you know what I mean?
So For me that Phillips base plus in air is one of the things that works for me.
Especially because I travel so much.
It has portable, which is always key.
We have 6 hrs on the bud easily and then we have an extra 6 hours to charge.
So for me it's like 12 hours and I travel everywhere, constantly.
You know what I mean?
So, Bahamas here, then I go to South Africa.
I'm in Vegas, so I keep moving.
So it's something that really works for me.
Nice, we have people that review headphones and I think you could have just taken all of their jobs right now.
It's what I do, you know what I mean?
It's what I do For me, it's easy, but Overhead is one of my favorites, because of who I am.
And people always, I walk through the airport, and people always just come up to me when I have ear buds in.
Really, that happens to you?
I had no idea.
When I have the ear buds in, they come up to me all the time.
But when I have the Overheads on, they kind of leave me alone a little bit.
You know what I mean?
So for me it's always a good thing.
It flips in and out quickly.
So it's something that I really enjoy, and I really love it, so it's something that I'm working on.
I love you talk about music.
What are you listening to right now?
Or are there artists right now that you're on?
Maybe people may or may not know about?
For me, as a DJ, a guy who listens to music on the regular
I try to stick to every genre of music, you know what I mean?
But I'm much into dance music.
I love to dance, so.
One of my favorite artists right now is Ding **** and that's what we do, so.
We dance a lot and we just have a good time.
Do you have any music, artists, or songs that are guilty pleasures?
That people would be like I didn't think you say and listen to that.
No as I said I try to-
There is gotta everyone-
I try to listen to everything, for me I try to keep it open
Everybody listens to the Backstreet Boys.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who listens to the Backstreet Boys.
Don't make me look bad.
Everyone here is laughing because they listen to the Backstreet Boys.
He's like, no, no, I don't listen to the Backstreet Boys.
Front row was like, I don't want it that way, no.
So in addition to music, and, you know, I'm sure you're using a lot when you're training and everything, this new just dropped.
I don't know if you saw people writing a lot about this, but you're going for a trial?
With Borussia Dortmund, the German professional football team.
That's pretty amazing.
So talk about that.
For me that's something I'm retired from track and field but I'm a sports person I mean I've always watched over the years and I've always played soccer throughout my years so something I was like I feel I could personally do so, I decided why not, and my sponsor Puma sponsors and they said you know what come for a trials and The trials, when I would go to the trials would determine what I do exactly with my career.
If I follow it up or if I don't so, we'll see what happens.
Is the trial happening in March like they're reporting?
Yes, it is happening in March.
So where are you with that physically and skill wise?
How do you feel about it?
I'm just training, I'm trying to get back into shape.
You know what I mean.
As you know as I said, you got to keep listening to your music.
Pump me up you know, keep going.
That is when I use my wireless the most.
It is something that I am focused on and I am going to get there.
Because I really want it, and when I want something, I really push myself to be the best that I can be.
I didn't notice that, at all, etiher.
The other thing about you train and everything, is it kind of step to your dream of playing for Manchester United?
Is that one of those things?
That's something that would be a big dream for me, you know what I mean?
I'm a massive fan of Manchester United, so If I could get into the team, you know what I mean.
Even for one season it would be a dream come true just to play with the guys, just to pay at old [UNKNOWN] there.
It would be something big so, we'll see what happens.
When March comes it will determine a lot of things.
I think a lot of people are gonna be watching that.
It's exciting to know that you're gonna be in a position to try this.
This is pretty awesome.
Yeah, a lot of people have been saying are you serious about this?
And I'm like, yeah.
Why don't people think I'm serious?
This is something I wanna do so I'm gonna go out there and do my best, for sure.
What about, let's just pretend and imagine that
You scored a gold for a man you, we know there's a lot, what would be the pose?
Would it be something different or the same or what do you think if you took yourself there like we envision the future.
Like for the first time, I remember the first time I won the Olympic gold medal
I didn't know what to do, you know what I mean?
So I know that's exactly what's going to happen.
In your mind, you're like, I'm going to do this pose.
I'm going to do this dance.
But as soon as you score that goal, you're going to lose it, you know what I mean?
You're not going to remember anything because that joy's just going to just
I probably just run the whole pitch.
So we'll see.
Awesome, the other thing that we wanted to try and do, I don't know if you're game for this.
But we know you're the fastest man alive, right?
Yeah, I heard.
We know you're on your phone.
You text message and stuff.
We wanted to see if you wanted to challenge me to a text messaging speed contest.
Now, I'll explain how this goes [LAUGH] and you can choose to accept or reject this, okay?
Let me hear this.
I haven't seen this but we've collected a sentence that, they actually have a contest every year.
Yeah.>> Like the national text speed challenge, whatever.
So we're going to put a sentence up here.
Alright.>> And we're hoping
That you and I, the goal is to type out this sentence that we'll both be able to see.
Whoever finishes it first and accurately will win the contest.
Usain, are you ready?
Usain is going to do it.
All right, guys.
Make some noise, give him a round of applause.
All right, so we're going to bring up a third party, kind of like a third party, kind of like a referee.
So Andy, come up on stage, my man.
And let's, I don't know what you use, notes or what would you like to use to type in the text?
We can do notes, that's fine.
Okay, let's do notes.
All right, so this is, is this your first ever text speed challenge?
I figured as much.
This is my first too, okay.
So let me open up a note here, it's totally blank let's hold these so people can tell.
Is it totally blank?
All right in the back if we could put up I guess the sentence we can turn our chairs this way to see.
Fast don't lie okay.
What is this?
Hey, you guys want to play at home?
Get your phones out and play at home, everyone watching online.
What is this?
Well, it's not like it's going to be brown dog jumps the fence.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Lazy brown fox, or whatever?
[UNKNOWN] but what you're saying is awesome.
Keep running fast.
You know what I mean?
The Phoenix base is awesome, you know what I mean.
You could use that.
You know I'm not gonna be able to do this either, okay.
All right, so Andy, why don't come over here and give us the three, two, one and again the goal is to try to be accurate.
I'm not good at this either, I mean.
He's already gone isn't he, in his brain.
Let's keep this clean, gentlemen.
[LAUGH] Are you ready?
[LAUGH] Yeah, ready.
This is bad.
What is going on here?
It's getting close.
I'm shaking already, I don't want to lose this.
Of the genera, what is that?
Can it be type?
What the hell?
[LAUGH] This makes no sense whatsoever.
Someone made it, Pico.
No, I don't think.
I don't know if you are.
Where are you at?
What's your word at right now?
I'm not telling you.
[LAUGH] It's just [INAUDIBLE] more.
I already did a typo, come on.
It's taking forever.
This is an official, okay.
This is hard.
I'm on the last sentence.
You better be close to that, bro.
I just finished.
I just, keep on.
But, I may not have it right.
I'm done now.
Do you have yours done?
So if you can verify that.
Should we read these one by one?
No, wait, wait.
That means I have to read all those?
I have to?
Read this out.
I bet it's.
I can tell that [LAUGH] [INAUDIBLE].
I don't even know.
I don't even know.
[CROSSTALK] That'd be razor-tooth piranhas of the.
Genera ceres salamis, and I'm not even going to try that one.
I'm telling you.
No one knows.
It's harder than it looks.
You should have tried it.
On the most ferocious freswater fish in the world.
That screen went dark.
And the reality they seldom attack a human.
Okay, I think we had about three mistakes there.
What would I get?
Razor tooth paranas and the generous, looks like you got [UNKNOWN].
I feel like you took all the correct off.
No, mine, I was, mine was autocorrected over here, too.
Cuz that's why mine was [CROSSTALK].
[CROSSTALK] why is all that stuff?
Just spending words.
They tell him [CROSSTALK].
That it feels like I'm trying to write.
You say an iPhone or an Android after this?
I'm [INAUDIBLE], I'm [INAUDIBLE].
He's like, I got sponsors to protect.
[LAUGH] All right, hey man.
Thank you so much for coming and hanging out with us.
We had a good time.
Fastest man alive but we'll be watching your football endeavors.
It's gonna be amazing.
Phil, [UNKNOWN] Thank you so much.
Everyone round applause for Uasin.
All right, thanks my man.
I appreciate it.
