Top 5 Cars at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Cars
We're here at the final Sunday of Monterey Car Week, which must mean it's the Pebble Beach Concours, hence there being a golf green behind me. The 17th, I believe. The Concours is, it's extraordinary, I've never been to Car Week before, I've never been to Pebble Beach before, fairly obviously. And normally, I find Concours difficult on the car's driving, which is, obviously, what I Particularly enjoy, but the sheer depth and quality of the vehicles here, things you won't just see anywhere else is unbelievable. Plus, it's a great place for just people watching, seeing small dogs in super cars. There's too much here for us to cover at all, so we've picked, well, the top five. Platinum top four just fine things that I think are particularly interesting for Southern little bits and bobs. So let's go and find them but we're in the gossip section at the moment is a Lamborghini, I kill us a Lamborghini is a gothic there is just over there. Under Bristol's roster and, let's keep going. [MUSIC] One of my absolute highlights of Pebble Beach is this Ferrari 412 P which is owned by James Quicken has its won the championship for Ferrari in 1967. And it's here in the livery famous livery of Maranello. concessionaires, hence the union jack on the front Dan there. Now the foreign two peas were the customer version of the P3 which is the the better known car. The difference between this is where it's got same four liter V 12 engine but this is running carburettors rather than the Lucas fuel injection of the factory cars The reason being that Enzo wanted Because to, well, be competitive, obviously, and take championship points away from the other teams. But equally, they didn't want them being quite as fast as the factory cars, and beating them, so typically Enzo Ferrari. This car is fabulously original, it's the same as the original paint. They've just touched it up from where they found it. But it's utterly, utterly stunning. And there are various sort of bits on it that she got down here you can see there. The original [UNKNOWN] documents from Le Mans for all the [UNKNOWN] this was number 23 I think. It's another very cool thing which we'll see just inside the door. That you can see the way the paint has been scratched off and it looks cool surely that should have been patched up, but it's where Laurens Avandia was standing there by the door. Having his photograph taken for press shots and his Rolex took the paint off as he he stepped away from the car. So I left it like that because it says, Well, why not? It makes it A nice story. So, there we are. [MUSIC] There's new tire class here for mirrors. But this one is particularly special. This is the SVR recently restored by the Polo Storico Lamborghini out in Santa Gasser now? Yes VRE DSVJ which was thought personally the ultimate expression of the mirror had the Fed in headlights and the wider front and rear tracks or inches wider at the rear. Although it's disappeared off to Japan I was based on the J. But just took things even further as you can see with the extra arrow that's on the stick to the rear wing it sits behind there. It disappeared off to Japan and eventually came back it inspired a comic and farcical circuit which is pretty cool and it came back basically in pieces and they restored it and it's here. And it's absolutely glorious. The only thing that's changed are just the seats and the four-point harnesses, because the new owner wants to take it on track, and have that bit of extra security. So, yeah, it's lucky, having all the others, too, to be able to walk around and see all the details, and what's changed on it. An entire class of Euros [MUSIC] It's an extraordinary because obviously be setting various little speed records for Bentley's on the Autobahn when it first produced and this is actually this is the sort of prototype I suppose for what became the Bentley Continental, so they're just gorgeous. At 57,000 RPM. Now, this is a car, this is actually one of the later gas turbine cars. Sort of listed within the golden era of the jet age of an aircraft. It was kind of a lot of experimentation within the automobile industry as it were. And they saw the Rogue BRMs that can beast in them all, and took inspiration from that. And Yeah, came up with this family they were incredibly reliable. Actually the jet engines are the biggest thing was working out how to deploy the powers you had to get on the flop is really really early in the corner to make it work. That extraordinary thing went on Sunset, various of land speed records and everything the mark to variation of this VS It started off [UNKNOWN] So hopefully you can hear that now. Just one of the crazy sights of [UNKNOWN] Anyway, in this Class there's another car I want to go and talk about, which is just literally next door, over there [MUSIC] This beautiful little car is a 1960 Porsche Carrera Abarth GTL. Now at that time Porsche was sort of fully invested in it's F1 program but they needed to keep it GT car sort of sports cars going and so they commissioned Abarth to create this new body over a 356. It's all aluminum. And it obviously has a much more sort of low-drag look to it than the cars that went before it. It is, I think, absolutely beautiful, this sort of bizarre mash-up of sort of the Germans and the Italians. And they only ever built 20 This one was incredibly successful. It's one of the later ones I think and it won the Swedish GT championship [UNKNOWN] wins from [UNKNOWN] And it's believe to be the most original [UNKNOWN] mostly I think were crashed while also racing. It's got a 1,600 [UNKNOWN] engine and it bring about 150 brake horsepower, it only weighs 1,700 pounds Which is about 70 Kilos. And yeah, I think it's beautiful. This particular car was actually caught in a horrible. There was a gas explosion in the building that it was kept in, so this has undergone a significant restoration, but all the body panels are still the original ones, and they didn't have to do anything to the [UNKNOWN] On the back. You can see all the [UNKNOWN] That were added later on the design. And then they're all still original. The other thing about these cars is that they were all slightly different because although the the fundamental design and center portion they approved it, they then sort of found that it was sort of cottage industry if you like at the time so all the different coach bills had their own slightly different take on it. So you couldn't just buy a windscreens going to have to be the spoke So we are German and Italian meeting in the middle. Lovely. [MUSIC] As it's 100 years of Bentley, they have a huge presence here at Pebble Beach. And so one of the men this one Very much caught my eye. I think it's absolutely beautiful. It's one of the Derby Bentelys. It's four and a half liter. So the Derby Bentleys were built in the Rolls Royce factory after Rolls Royce took control of Bentley in the early 1930s. This is Coach built by [UNKNOWN] In France, it was also designed by George Poullard, who was well-known at the time for his aerodynamic body work, and I mean, real focus on aerodynamics. All added new body work, so it saved about 150 kilos. There's another Poullard-designed car down there as well, which is just, and they're really quite distinctive, once you know What you're looking at, this car was built for Andre [UNKNOWN] car, and he did 100,000 miles in this car. It was [UNKNOWN] raced at the mall in the very late 40s and early 50s. He raced three times, finished sixth once. It's an extraordinary because obviously be setting various little speed records for Bentley's on the Autobahn when it first produced and this is actually this is the sort of prototype I suppose for what became the Bentley Continental, so they're just gorgeous. In amongst all this there was of course a competition going on, and the judges favorite was an immaculate list until the confetti went off 1931 Bentley eight liter Gurney nuttin sports Tara owned by some Michael [UNKNOWN] So that is a brief look at Pebble Beach this year. Hopefully you've enjoyed it. They're kicking off with all the awards. Now as you can hear, we thought we finish up with the hot rods. Is there something you just don't really see in the UK and there are extraordinary that can be probably no car more gleaming and pristine than this one here which is based on a model to the front and a model Just gonna have a look at the leaf springs round the back of this, extraordinary. It has been incredible and I hope this is not the last time I come to Pebble Beach. [LAUGH] Utter madness.
