Tomorrow Daily 122: Google growing human skin, Jennifer the skiing robot, NASA's SMAP and more

Culture
On today's show Google is growing human skin in a lab but I promise you it's not for the reasons you're thinking of. A robot learned skiing and hockey and just is better than us in a lot of ways. Yep and NASA got it's smap up. Up into the sky this weekend. If you don't know what a snap is, we're gonna tell you. Khail too. It's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings, Citizens of the Internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the known universe. I'm your host, Ashley Esqueda. Joining me as always with a fantastic tee shirt Mr. Khail Anonymous. She sure is so loud. It's so loud and so great.>> The neighbors came over and were like turn it down!>> Turn your shirt down!>> But I love this, I love this shirt>> Turn it down>> it's my spirit animal>> it's a pretty->> it's [UNKNOWN] shirt>> It's a pretty great shirt.>> Yeah, anyway so>> So it's Monday and we have again a little bit of housekeeping. But this is sad housekeeping.>> Oh yeah. A couple of our colleagues, industry friends passed away this last, or few days, I guess, like last week or so. And it's a really big bummer but we wanted to tell you a little bit about them, so I will let you start with Monty. Okay, first off, Monty Oum of Rooster Teeth's fame has, has passed away. He was, he was a part Rushute. He was one, one of the people that took the art of machenima to the next level. Machenima is, is making movies in a, in a gaming world. Mm-hm. But, but he was he was. And one of the people from my past and, and he, he's inspired a lot of people that were crea, that couldn't make stories in anything else. They didn't have any ability to, and, and he was able to do that. And he was a really inspiring, hard working guy and he was 33 years old. So, yeah. Too young. Really, really sad. So, our thoughts go out to the, the friends and family of Monty. And people at Rooster Teeth, so. And then and then also we lost a, a great video gaming journalist, Andrew Yoon. Some of you might know Andrew from Weekend Confirmed, from Shack News, Joystiq. He was, he was over on Joystiq for a while. Great guy. I had never met him personally, but honestly, was one of those people. Legitimately, I never heard somebody say a bad thing about him. Oh, wow. And it was just, it's super rare to hear about people like that in the industry because everybody has bad days. And it just seemed like every time someone talked about Andy Yoon it was so positive. Like, he just seemed like a really enthusiastic guy who loved video games, loved technology. And a and passed away at the age of 29, again way to young, in a tragic accident last week and I'm just really shocked a lot of people and a so were' were bummed, we're super bummed. And we hate to start the show on such a low note but we thought it's really important to honor those. Those friends of ours. And the rest of industry because everybody is just really bummed out today. So, we're gonna try to give you a go, a good show. We're gonna try to entertain you. But but you know, hug, hug someone you care about today is what we're saying. So, let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] Okay so google is growing human skin in a lab.>> Alight, I'm outta here.>> Yep, let's all just pack it in guys. It's not for cyborgs, it's not for T1000's don't worry, quite yet.>> Okay>> For to send back in time to save John Connor. It is synthetic human skin, but they have used real human skin. So this actually comes from Google X labs. And the Atlantic did this really great profile on them. They are, Google X labs is trying to create a wearable, that can detect diseases, impending events like heart attacks, and even Cancer in people. And so here's how they are thinking they might be able to do it. So you would take a pill with nano particles in them. And these nanoparticles would have markers on them that could attach themselves to cancer cells or, or different types of markers that they would be looking for and nothing else. Wow. So, the wearable would then detect those nanoparticles and the cells that they're attached to via the light emitted by the cell. So, the, your cells emit light. And since that means it would have to see this very, very faint light through your skin, they have been very seriously researching skin. Which is super fascinating to me. They have been growing really lifelike skin, cuz they need to make sure it works on different skin tones and different. Skin thicknesses and different, just all kinds of stuff. So they're also they're also using actual human skin that's been like donated through science. Like, when you die you can donate your organs? Well, your skin is actually the biggest organ in your body. The most large. surface area. So you can donate your skin. And a lot of people, Kale's, like, I will not be doing that. but, yeah, so apparently Google X wants to make this crazy wearable that if you wear it can detect, and say, they'll monitor you, like, all the time, you'll have these nanoparticles, and they'll say hey. Something's wrong, you need to go see a doctor. But I mean obviously no, real world testing or anything like that. Like they haven't made some like crazy medical breakthrough. But I just thought it was super fascinating that they're like growing synthetic skin in a lab and like testing out this wearable, and they want to use nano particles which is crazy or like take a pill with these little particles in it, they're going. Attach themselves to a specific kinda cell. That's so crazy. I just think that's so neat. It's such a testament to how far we've come in, in medicine in like 50 years. Or even like, ten. Mm-hm. It, it's just really unbelievable. So, I just thought that was really cool. That's definitely one of those tech that you put on a list that in five years like, everything's just gonna be completely crazy. Yeah. And we're gonna all have like, nano. Technology and we're all just wearing headsets- Yeah. So we could be like oh- And robot limbs. Instead of having to do anything it's just, oh, is something wrong with you? Here, have this pill. It's got nano particles in it and it will look for that specific thing to be wrong with you. Weird. Totally weird. Yeah. Pretty soon this show's gonna be hosted by Ashley Bot and Khail Bot. Yeah. We're more robot, more robot than human. We're, we're actually just made of nano particles right now. That's really exciting. And Google's behind. You know their not going to give up. > Apparently, they've poured quite a bit of money into this medical a lot of advanced medical research, so there you go. Tell me about this robot. Okay, so let's talk about Jennifer, Jennifer yes is a robot that is just having a blast and she is. Skiing. Can I call her Jen? No you can't. Okay. Her name is Jennifer. Okay. Jennifer is a skiing robot. Look there she goes. But, yeah. She, she does both skiing and skating. She is made by none other than Canada. So Canada Well of course. Skiing. [CROSSTALK] Manitoba Canada. Hockey. In the autonomous agents laboratory. That sounds like an awesome lab. Now, she's been playing hockey since 2012. So, she's, she's actually been playing sports. But the, the skiing is brand new. Look at the tiny robot. Look at how adorable she is. [LAUGH] Why didn't they have her in a Super Bowl commercial the other day? Now they've crea, they've created robots like this before and have won competitions prior to creating this robot, so- Oh, okay. So they know what they're doing. So the goal here, all right? Yeah, what's the goal? So the goal here is to use the tech here to pave the way for robots that do fire fighting and rescuing. As always. It's always something about rescue and the reason is because it, it ,. Robots that can play sports have the ability to complete multiple tasks and adapt to changing situations and environments. Okay. So, yeah. Like, I mean, obviously this Jennifer is out, you know, and with the snow it's changing, the ground changes. Mm-hm. So, I would imagine this would be really good for researchers to sort of test how well it can do in an environment where it needs to sort of adapt. To you know to it's surroundings pretty quickly, and as and constantly changing->> Right, and this seems to be a theme with people creating robots is that they have them adapt to some sort of sport.>> Mm-hm Jennifer is actually gonna compete May of this year at the international conference.>> The Olympics. No. Oh. A national conference of robotics and autom, automoto, automation. Sorry. Automation. Okay. Wow. So, there you go. Our best of luck to Jennifer and- Bring home the gold. Look forward to seeing- To Canada. What other sports that she picks up. So, robo football. Maybe volleyball? Who knows? But it seems like cuz it's Canada it's gonna be mostly- Poutine making. Snow and, and. In, in hockey and, and->> Maple syrup, I don't know>> Yeah maple syrup>> I don't know something like that. Maybe she'll be Mounty. She could be a cop.>> Do you have any more Canada jokes in you? Ey? [LAUGH] Yeah, I got lots more of that, I'll leave them alone. I won't, I won't tell them.>> [LAUGH] I will tell you though the hash tag of the day.>> [LAUGH] You've been waiting for those Canada jokes all day.>> Man it's just it's->> You're like, you're like [LAUGH] I just live for. [UNKNOWN] I twirled my mustache, I put on my snuggly whiplash cape. I was so excited to be evil! Somehow I knew you were going to bring out the Canada jokes today. It's true [UNKNOWN], I think [UNKNOWN], they're so polite and so nice. Yeah. I know many Canadians and I just love them, they're so delightful. okay, so, our hashtag today is tdteach. Mm-hm. And the question is, what fun thing would you teach a robot to do if you could teach it to do anything? Okay, go ahead. But it has to be like a sport or something fun. I feel like I would teach my robot to walk my dog. That's not fun. Well, it's fun for the dogs. Or I guess. Okay. [INAUDIBLE] supposed to be fun for the robot! I would teach the robot. Oh, fun for the robot? Mm-hm. Well, that's a good question. You, you wanna go first. I'll go first. Fun for the robot. Yeah, go ahead. Sunbathing. You'd teach the robot to just, just sunbathe it out. To sunbathe. Okay. And it would be, and it would be, solar powered. Oh, so- So it'd just be like this. Powered sun bathing robot, just collecting energy. And it would just, it would use the energy to stay like this. I think they have those, they're called solar panels. I think it's just a piece of metal laying- [LAUGH] They're solar panels. Laying out in the sun. I think we've already invented that. I don't, I mean I would really like to see robots surfing. I think that would be really fun. Yeah, but the, yeah. It'd have to- Scuba diving. Yeah, scuba driving. [LAUGH] Scuba diving like get way down there. That's actually terrifying once they get into the water. Scuba diving robots, that'd be super cool. Okay, cool. All right, so then lastly I we. We were going to talk about this on Thursday, but then they delayed the launch. So we had to push the story back and make sure they launched it in to the orbit. Good call. That, and, and we could actually talk about it. So, NASA JPL launched their smap satellite this weekend. It was a successful launch. Here's some of the video. This smap stands for soil, moisture, active, passive and it's a satellite observatory. So this is kinda crazy because you would imagine that if you wanted to study soil, you would have to do it on earth, but that is not so, so what SNAP is out there doing is, it's, it's up in orbit, it's checking out the earth, and it's designed to monitor the earth's soil moisture, the top two inches of our soil on earth, dur-, day and night. It can see through clouds. It can see through some vegetation, like medium amounts of vegetation. So it can, it can measure the moisture in our soil from space like all the, it, i, i, insane. So it blows my mind that that's even possible. It's a three year mission and the point of this mission is to monitor the Earth's soil moisture and track the effects of drought. So what they're saying is, they will be able to make these sort of unprecedented soil maps, from space. They're gonna have these, like, crazy detailed maps that we've really never had before that are global, so they'll be able to track everything, and, they're saying that these maps would hopefully, in a perfect world, be able to improve climate and weather forecasts. Monitor drought, predict flooding, crop yields and famine. So if they say like, hey, we're noticing this pattern here. This is gonna be a good crop yield, or a bad. You know, this is what we've seen over the last three years. But super fascinating and if you want to follow them on Twitter you can over to Twitter.com/Nasasmap. A movie update. And I actually go to see this, the snap at now the JPL, before the end of the year last year. I got to go and see it while they were working on it and getting it ready to like, launch. So it was really cool.>> huh>> I got to like look down into the lab. And everybody's in these crazy you know, all white outfits. With like, they're totally free of contaminants because they don't want to send that up and. It's oh my gosh, it was so cool. It was really, really cool.>> Wh, wait how long is it gonna be up there?>> Three years, three year mission. Okay>> So and they're, it's gonna monitor like it uses radar and radiometer radio and blah, blah, radar and radiometers to check the level, the moisture level in. The surface and top two inches of soil. Only two inches. It's this much. And, and, and it's over the entire planet, right? Yeah. They're gonna be monitoring. The entire planet. Earth. So, it's gonna help everybody? Should. I mean, hopefully it will. I, I think this is just super fascinating for me. I mean, the fact that we can. We can monitor that- Yeah. From space? Cool! Like in orbit? So, good job, NASA! Yeah. That'll definitely help us out, so that's good. Yeah! So, that is it for our headlines. We'll be right back. We have a [INAUDIBLE] that's for the phonetographers out there. Oh! And, and we also have your user feedback from last week, and of course, speaking of, our phonetographer for the day, so [INAUDIBLE] tomorrow daily. [MUSIC] Welcome back, welcome back to the show. We have returned with a, a Monday edition, as always, of Back It or Hack It. Hack it. You're just right up front. I hate this thing. All right. What are we even talking about? It's called Prynt with a Y. Prynt with a Y. Mm hm. For those of us millennials who like to spell things here. Now I need the Z on the end. Prynts, no it's Prynts and, it's a phone case. But it's a special phone case that is a photo printer. What? So you drop your phone in there. Pop it in there and it doesn't work via Bluetooth it actually uses your connector, so your power and then and you print out little pictures. [LAUGH] Anything you have on your phone, you can just print out like a little Polaroid camera. Oh, man. Bam. You've turned your smartphone into basically, you know, the equivalent of what a, a Polaroid camera is, it's just pretty awesome. That's quirky. It's super tweed it's a little bit, you know, it's a little hipster-y. But but they make a good point in the video, like they were talking about how like, maybe you're all out on a night. You know, night on the town with your friends and it's a good keepsake. It's funny like you know, maybe you've I don't know. Maybe there's rom com, some sort of meet cute [UNKNOWN] You can write on your little pictures, make a little board. Mm-hm. I don't know. Get, get physical with it. Yeah. No it's adorbs. [CROSSTALK]. I just thought it was really interesting that it's compatible with both iOS Okay. And Android. Oh, that's great! Usually it's like, it's only one or the other. I, I have to know. This looks kind of expensive. okay, so. So, it is 99 dollars, which isn't- Okay. That, that's not that expensive. Terrible. No. I was expecting it to be, like, 199, cuz that seems to be, like- Me too. The entry level price point for everything on Kickstarter that's, like, technology based. However, I'm sure that the printing paper or whatever is expensive. In fact, you do, in fact, need to buy printer paper. so, you get ten sheets. So it's basically like buying a printer at home, you get like starter 10 sheets>> You know starter ink and like, but it doesn't use ink which is nice, or cartridges. It's like almost like a Z ink or whatever. You know Polaroid has their Z ink. So this is it's all done inside. You don't have to worry about ink or cartridges but you do have to buy the special paper. So it's special paper that is, I think they said $25 for 50 sheets. Um>> That's not bad. Alright. Fifty cents a sheet, kind of expensive. I mean when you think I mean when you break it down, but I mean if you print, if you like to, if you only need fifty, fifty might last somebody a really long time. Yeah. So, or it might last somebody, like, 3 weeks. Yeah. I don't know what, I don't know what your photography habits are. I'm sure, like, day one you'd go nuts, though, and then maybe afterwards- And then you'd, and then it'd mellow out. Wouldn't be so crazy. For the rest of the 11 months of the year. You'd be like [NOISE]. Yeah. You're like highschool, you're like it's the guy I like. [NOISE] You know? Exactly. And then, there's a tree. You know? Oh, look. Here's my breakfast cereal. Oh, God. But yeah. The other thing that I really liked was this. The app, the print app has a really awesome feature. It's call, it's augmented reality scanning. So, let's say you have your your print. And you hold the picture up, the, the physical picture that you took, you hold it up to the app, and it will show you the, the few seconds before you snap the picture as like a living photo. Wait. How, how does it do that? It's it, it's augmented reality. So wha, when you take that picture, it takes video of like the few seconds before you take the photo. And then, you, when you put, when you hold the printed picture up to your app in the camera, it looks like the picture is animated. It's a like a little video of it. I was onboard until then. And then your I don't, I don't really know cause usually people are like okay alright hold on, alright. Well is just people like this. Yeah, it's, it's, I, I, I'm, I'm not sure that's as cool as it sounds. It sounds cool but people aren't like, yeah fireworks [NOISE]. And then they're like. If it's a, if it's a posed picture, I get it. But if not, if it's like an action shot where you're at a party or something then it's great. Yeah. It's really great. It's very lifelike and funny and you could always relive the moment or whatever. Mm-hm. You know, like camera. Picture enthusiast like to, you know, relive the moment like everybody likes that. So,- It's a cool feature. Yeah. It's a cool feature I don't know that I'd but it. So I'm gonna say hack it. It's not for me. How much was it? $25 for the, the thing. Yeah. It, and $100 is the fee when, like once it's completely out? That's to Kickstart it. $99 bucks gets you- How much is it when it comes out? A print. I don't know how much it'll be when it actually like, releases via retail. Probably $200, right? No. I think it'll be like, probably $130, $150. Probably $150, something like that. But the, the earliest. Oh, man I wish I would have gotten in on the low, lowest level backer. Like the early, earlier bird. They only had 20 of them. They like put aside like 20 earliest birds. And it was like 30 bucks, or 40 bucks or something, it was super cheap, or maybe 50. But it was under $50 and than after that it was like oh, it's 75 and on. I am going to speak for myself and not others and say hack it. Okay. that's me too [UNKNOWN]. I definitely think some other people, like my. My sister would love it. 100%. I know lots of people who would love this. My sister would be all about it. My personally, I don't see myself using it a lot. And also, it's not, so far I did not see any compatibility for, phones like the Note four or the iPhone six plus. It's kind of smallerish phone. Um-hm. So, I saw, like, the Galaxy S five Okay and I saw. Saw the iPhone 6 but I didn't see the the Note 4 was not in there. All right. Or the, or the 6+, so there you go. It's cute. Cute. Adorbs. Like it. All right. Like I said. Great for the people, maybe not for us. Double hacks. Double ax. It's terrible. Alright you guys, let's, let's try to, try to cheer everyone up with some user feedback. [NOISE] Wow, you're really putting this on the users to cheer everyone up? Yeah. And you're going to because they were really good. So last week we asked you guys to use the hashtag. TD unreal to tell us what old retro game they'd want rebuilt and unreal engine four. Okay>> So frank wrote to us and said I would love to see" Half Life 2" remade.>> Yeah>> Using UE4 and maybe" Fallout 3" too. The Wasteland done in UE4 would be awesome! Kayla Green from QVC. Did I not say that, did I, was that not my message- I think you mentioned you wanted to make me play Fallout, but I don't think that was your answer. I didn't say Fallout 3? Alexander wrote to us and said how about Pong? No. I think if you did it in a real, like real life scenar, it would be kind of- No. It'd be hard. Really tough. No. I don't wanna do that. Stefan- Sorry, Alexander. Stefan wrote to us and said Minecraft might not be that old but a super realistic recreation of it would be awesome. But then, is it really Minecraft? You're in Minecraft right now, technically. You go out to the forest- Yeah. Technically, we're in a simulation right now. You know, I mean just go out to the forest and it's really just high res Minecraft. True. That's Stefan, right? Yeah. I don't, I, I love, I love Stefan, but I'm not- I don't know, Stefan. What, what would that look like? Yeah. Stefan, you gotta elaborate. You know? Yeah. You gotta maybe give us a visual, visual cue of what it would look like. Maybe with something called Photoshop. Mm-hm. What do you got next. Jesus wrote to us and said I'd love to experience a remastered System Shock 2. Oh my God. If the rights issues could be resolved. And he even tagged @IGLevine. [LAUGH] I like that. Wow, that's a blast from the past, sort of. Yeah. Yeah. Totally. And then Rob emailed us and said number one, Jedi Academy. Number two, Star Citizen. Oh, wait, Star Citizen, isn't that being rendered in the unreal? I don't know. It's, well, it's prett, it looks gorgeous anyway. P.S. I would like to see, if these four. I would like to see these four series and this game be developed using the unreal engine on Oculus Rift. I would like to see, they would be Resident Evil series, Silent Hill series, Assassins Creed series, and Dying Light. Man, he wants to see a lot of horror stuff! Yeah. You like survival horror, Rob! We get it! Yeah. Looks good, looks good. I think we're good. Good choices! Yeah, really good choices! Except for Pong. Alex. I'm not even throwing any haterade up in the air, but there you go. Sorry. I think, I think you just doused Alex in haterade. You just like poured it over him. I'm sorry. Really. I'm sorry. Hopefully. Ponk. Yeah, ponk. Okay guys it's time for our last piece of user feedback which is of course our phonetographer of the day. [NOISE] [MUSIC] You know, Kyli R wrote to us and I thought this was really interesting. He didn't say quite what phone he used but said, we got some new. We got some awesome new lenses for our telescope. And I couldn't resist the opportunity to use them to once again show how phones could be used to take great photos. Please enjoy my attached photo of the moon, of the moon. No way. That's our moon. That's fantastic. So I'm assuming he just, you know, put his phone through the Yeah. You know, put, put the lens right up there on the eye piece and snapped, snapped a pic of the moon. Just pretty cool. That's pretty great! Yeah! I totally dig that. I saw it, and I was just like, oh, that's delightful! Hey, ingenuity is allowed during the phonetographers. Totally true! And we, and we saw the drone photo, which cheated but still was amazing! Slightly cheating but looked very cool. So, great job! Yeah! You're definitely my favorite viewer so, nice! Yeah, very creative. Really creative, maybe like a 90 on a scale of 100, so not quite my favorite. Not quite yet, but if you'd like to be in contention for my favorite phonetographer of the day, or if you'd like to be Khail's favorite phonetographer of the day, you can email us tomorrow@CNET.com. You can also set it your user feedback there. Or if you absolutely hate email you can find us all over social media. We're on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, and Tumblr as Tomorrow Daily. And then we're on Google+ as tomorrow daily tv. And you wanna see pawn made and unreal engine. Don't forget to Get out A,and you like YouTube. Don't forget to subscribe, like and leave a comment. And also if you're listening on the on the podcast, hello. Hello everybody. Hello, we're checking your bass. This is our radio voices. Don't forget to rate and review and, I don't know, [UNKNOWN]. You can just subscribe on there, too? Well, yeah, you can always subscribe to the podcast. Alright, cool. Awesome. And we do, we do a video version of the podcast, too. And we have a Snapchat, did you say that? We do have, I did mention the Snapchat. For kids We don't have, like, a lower third for that so you're just gonna have to, what is it? But we have a contest, it's tomorrowdaily on snapchat. Any spaces? It's just [CROSSTALK] Nope, just tomorrowdaily. One word, all lowercase. And we're doing a contest as to who's shirt was better, so you guys can tell us. Okay, cool. And your snaps. Mm-hm. Send us your snaps. Anyway, that's it for today's show. We'll be back with a whole new docket of weird, wonderful, awesome, science, de-pop culture, gaming, whatever floats our boat news. tomorrow, but until then, be good humans and we'll. See you guys next time. Bye. [MUSIC]
