Tomorrow Daily 096: The 'Suicide Squad' cast, an insane fried shrimp gun, and more

Culture
On today's show, scientist use ultrasound to create objects that you can actually reach out and touch. We have a new joker for the superhero movies! And then a bunch of other Suicide Squad people, so. But they are not us. No. We were not cast. Also we're going to tell you how Google made with code project is going to let you program the light. On a Christmas tree display in Washington D.C. He-he-he-he. Super exciting. Don't get your hopes up. Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings, citizens of the internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily. The best good couch, and there are numerous. I'm your host, Ashley Esqueda. Joining me once again, Kale Anonymous finished with his pizza espionage. I told you not to tell people I was doing that. Sorry, I was just assume, I guessed. Alright, well. And then, and then I was right later, and it just got weird. I'm gonna delete this footage off of YouTube anyway. So, you know, [CROSSTALK]. Put a dash in. Yeah. Exist. This never happened. But you know what did happen? News? Our headlines. [LAUGH] [MUSIC] Like that transition? Like that? Me too. Me too. Okay, what do you got? Alright so we've got to talk about haptic feedback. Now we've covered the exoglove that allows you to sort of feel feedback in virtual reality. Yeah. Remember that crazy [CROSSTALK] glove? Yeah. Very cool. And then we also talked about ultrasound being used to make a haptic keyboard, like a holographic keyboard. Mm-hm. So you can feel it. This is a little bit different, but it's kind of in the same vein. So this comes from the University of Bristol's department of computer sciences. They have invented a new method of haptic feedback. It allows you to actually see the object in question. So you can see this, this woman is, like, reaching and touching this object. This is really cool. So the way that they set this up and how it works is they're using complex ultrasound patterns, and then they focus them into shapes and they cause air disturbances. So. For example, if you were to feel these sort of ultrasound, this array, you would be able to kind of feel almost like a haptic feedback, like something that was actually pushing against your hand. Okay. Okay, so they're, they're using that, and usually you wouldn't be able to see this technology, but in the video, I believe that they're using like a, almost like a hologram, or you know, computer generated. But, this right here what you're seeing is oil. So they're showing you this shape that they're making with ultrasound inside this oil. So that's what you're seeing right now on the screen. So there you go, its a single sided, double sided, so the modulate the ultrasound at certain frequencies to create these shapes. Okay, alright. Make a rotate the shape and everything so,. The neat thing about this is, and this is where it gets kinda cool. So this looks kind of like okay, well, it's sort of weird, like what exactly are we gonna do wit this technology? Well, they say that obviously you'd want to pair this type of technology with a display. Maybe a holographic display. And in doing so, you could do things like. If I were a surgeon maybe I could reach into a holographic CAT CT scan. Yes. And feel the difference between say an organ and a tumor. Or maybe if I was going to. Here's another good. A touchless exploration in eyes busy settings. You would just reach out and be able to have. Raised gauges, like without having to look out, okay. Yeah. And then also one of the things they mentioned was people in a museum, might be able to reach out and touch an artifact without actually touching the physical object. Aah! That's great too. Yeah. The really cool, sorta hope for the technology. Art, technicality, and science. Yeah. Really, really, neat, like a, just kind of a cool use of the technology that may come into play in a very big way later. But just really awesome. They're just scratching the surface. Yeah, I'd say so. [LAUGH] Get it? Cuz it's virtually scratching. Yeah, it's just a little, little scratch on the surface. But really neat to see. And also the thing that got me the most excited was all the potential uses in the future. Yeah [CROSSTALK] We just gotta nail holographic displays. Yeah. [LAUGH] That's the next step. Then, then we can drive and. You know. Yeah. Okay so let's not. We gotta jump into this. I was so excited. You weren't here yesterday. And they announced the news right in the middle of the show. And I'm like okay [UNKNOWN] going to be able to talk about it tomorrow. So, suicide squad was kind of one of the things they announced where everyone was kinda like oh all right okay. Whatever. Suicide. Squad yeah sure okay. Well there was a lot of buzz around casting because there was a lot of A-listers in there. A lot A-listers. Like, oh those are rumours. Turns out, most of them were right. Yeah. Ryan Gosling not included. So here's what we got. First of all we got a new joker. And it's Jared Leto. It's Jesus, as Jared Leto. Okay, it's, it's, it's Jesus Leto,. So that was, that was exciting. [LAUGH] Jesus Leto. Everybody is totally cool with this one. Totally fine. You know what? No, that's not true. That's not true. I saw so many ragey people on the Internet saying. I've seen. Oh, no. People on the Internet aren't happy? Saying. He's too pretty. All right, okay. We'll, we'll scuff him out. I disagree. Continue. Okay. I mean Heath Ledger was a beautiful man. Let's continue. All right. Okay the next one is, is, what do we got? What do we got? Oh yeah. Will Smith is going to be Deadshot. So, now, I mean, this is obviously the biggest title, right? Well it's a big change from the comic because Will Smith is black and Deadshot in the comic, white. But kind of cool that DC is kind of, really been, kind of more committed, I would say. So far to diversity. Right. And Marvel. Yep. Which is very interesting. I mean, you got Black Panther. Chadwick. Yep. Bill Chadwick Boseman. But yeah, no the, we got a, we got a female. I dig it. And then we have then we have Tom Hardy. Rick Flag. Playing in another D.C. movie. Hey listen. Somebody different. I got a theory about this. I got a theory about it okay. All right. He's in this new D.C. movie. He's in Suicide Squad because. Nobody can understand what Bane was saying so it's as if he was never in a DC movie previously. Like we didn't really, it was such a transformation. Now he's gonna be like Tom Hardy. Like you're gonna see him and you're like that's Tom Hardy. Yeah. Because he was hidden behind his, you know. Right, yeah, OK, you can do it it's just A mask, like yo know. That's pretty, that's pretty intense. I mean we had two, we had Ryan Gosling [CROSSTALK] big deal. Sorry not Ryan Gosling, ,. He was a great intern. It's Evans. Well we had Chris Evans. He played The Human Torch. Chris Evans. Yeah he was Johnny Storm and he's now Captain America. Yeah there's plenty of this. So that's fine. Moving on. Next. How do you say it? Kara Delevine. [INAUDIBLE] She can play Harley Quinn. Favorite day ever. I am so excited. I'm so excited for her. She's going to knock it out of the park. She already has the accent, so it will be good. I know, I'm a huge listen, I'm a both Margot Robbie and Harley Quinn fan, and I think this is like perfect casting. It's on point Perfect. So I have to believe that the rest of them are on point too. I'd like to think that. And then we have, oh yeah, Jai Courtney. He's gonna play Boomerang, which is like- Okay. The, it's, he's like the secondary, odd version of Aquaman. Like Boomerang is like. Thinking of Aquaman, and people like joke around about Aquaman being the lamest, but, so, then you have Boomerang. So I don't know what this is. This is also Jai Courtney, which I don't, whatever. It's kind of weird like, A-lister, A-lister and then like, who's this guy? [CROSSTALK] He was in Diehard. Like, I know that he's in Spartacus. Like I get. I get it okay but. No I met him, very nice guy. Impress us is what we're saying. [CROSSTALK] Very, very nice guy. Jud Let's do this. [CROSSTALK] All right and then next we have. I think we have Cara Delevinge. Yeah, Cara Delevinge. Cara Delevinge is my eyebrow inspiration for life. [INAUDIBLE] Yeah? She is like my favorite supermodel. Look at that quirky, quirky personality. [CROSSTALK] And there you go. She can play enchantress. And then. I wonder how they do that in a world not grounded in magic. Chick. Like this is not really a magical world like this universe [CROSSTALK] Who even knows [CROSSTALK] any of these movies yet so okay. Then there's mastermind [LAUGH] Amanda, Amanda Waller but she isn't, she isn't cast yet. She's like the villan in the movie right? Yeah, yeah but [CROSSTALK] Okay well who are they, well who are we talking about? Oh my God get ready for this. Okay go. So Viola Davis. Great choice. Octavius Spencer. Amazing choice. Yeah great, and Oprah Winfrey. What? What Oprah? Yeah. You know what's going to happen? There's going to be a moment in the movie where she's like. You all get cars. And you all die. You're gonna die, and you're gonna die. Everybody gonna die. You heard that joke. Here 5th. At least 5th, maybe 50th. It might even been 50th. So there you go. Jesse Eisenberg is rumored to come back and play Lex again. Come back. We haven't seen him yet, but at that point. But it will be coming back. David Ayer. There's Ire I've interviewed him, I should know. You should know that. David, David, David Ayer. I think it's Ayer, did training day and end of watch. Good, good director. Great director. Yeah and really gritty stuff. Yeah, It's all like, like. Yeah. Very action oriented, like really good at that type of movie. I think he'll do very well. So yeah I mean there you go, 2016. Who knows how expensive this thing is with all those a listers. I mean just. Paying their salaries, not counting everything else. What are you guessing, $250? For how much it cost me? $150 million? Oh, yeah, yeah. But they're banking like, a superhero award. It's sort of like, [CROSSTALK] yeah, we'll get a big bank and, Yeah Then some. Yeah, but you got to spend money to make money, right? But that brings us to our TD of the day. True. And that is- Hashtag #tdssquad. TD, oh, it's S squad? S Squad. Okay, #tdssquad. So we wanna know, do you think that they got all these characters right? Do you think that, you know, maybe- Tell us just anything, whatever your thoughts are on [UNKNOWN] I do like super hardcore [UNKNOWN] and you, like, really want him to play [UNKNOWN] Are you Jack Courtney? [LAUGH]. Sorry guy. I really apologize. I heard it wasn't that bad. But anyway, obviously who's your favorite on the casting let's say besides Margot. Besides Margot. You know, I, I gotta say. I was so skeptical about Heath Ledger as the joker. That I feel like this is right, because of what I saw Heath Ledger do with the joker and when we all saw him do the Joker, Jared Leto as the new Joker is right, I feel like it's going to be great, and it's going to be different because he, it may not be better or worse, it's just going to be different, because Jared Leto is his own person and I feel like with. Harley Quinn involved. It's gonna be kind of more fun and a little bit more like, I just think it's gonna be a little bit more, it's gonna be a little bit sexier. I think his, I think his role is gonna be at least like not sexy joker, not like Calvin costumes guys, but like I feel like his depiction might be a little bit more appealing to a lady audience and maybe a Harley Quinn. That's all I'm saying. He's gonna. That's what I'm saying is that we're gonna ha-, he's gonna have to build off the relation. Right which is awesome. Completely. It gets way away. It gets him way away from anything that Heath Ledger did in Dark Knight. Which I'm all about that. So this is basically just like. We're going to start from scratch again. So should be interesting to see. I'm in. I'm excited. If there's any cameos other than Jesse Eisenberg as well. So. Yep, yep. Although, you know, Warner Brothers doesn't tend, necessarily do post credit scenes. Yeah. So maybe we won't see any of that. [CROSSTALK] I'm actually now, I'm actually now excited for this film. Like, I was excited cuz of Harley Quinn. Yeah. And they were like, maybe she's not gonna be in it. Now it's like. Let's do this. But now like, we got a new Joker, we got a bunch of X, X factors. And of course Jai Courtney. So. [UNKNOWN] You're the one. You're the reason. You're the reason. Boomerang, everybody's new favorite. **** Groot. We've got [UNKNOWN] and Boomerang. Great. No not at all. Listen. This is way more informative and interesting than us nerd raging out. I'm sorry for anyone that. Let's go, nice job. Staff work. Okay, so I gotta tell you guys about this really cool thing. It's a it's called Made with Code. This is a project that Google launched four years ago to help girls get into coding, like spark their interest in coding. Oh neat. And they have these really neat little projects on the website where you can go and like they have, you like build a snowflake with like blocks of kind of code. It's not. You know full on coding like probably a lot of you guys do. But it's to, it's to help kids kind of spark an interest in being a coder or engineer. It's really, really neat there's like mentors and there's community programs and all this stuff. It's really awesome. But here's what we're doing for the holidays. Which I thought was awesome. It's very cool. It's called holiday lights. Made for code holiday lights. Here's how it works. You drag and drop all this, all these bits and so you can see it like this is how kind of code works. So you have the outside you know, the kind of the framework of the code, and this is how it works. You drop in all your variables. You drop in what colors you want. And you can see a preview of the tree right there as you are changing the variable. Which is really neat. And so you can set up, you know, if you want, if you want the lights to go, you know, up and to the right or back and to the left. Easy. Back to the left [LAUGH] And, so you can do these different things and then the neat thing is, is that at the end, when you submit it, you can pick out up to, I believe it is 56 states and territories and it gets put in a que. So here's the tree Producer Logan put up. That's the tree Producer Logan made. Uninspired. [LAUGH] Uninspired. There's no troll face on this. But, the cool thing is is that it will actually show up on one of 56 trees. Between December fourth and January second. How would you be able to see it? There, I believe on, especially on the fourth. They're definitely doing a live stream on YouTube of like the tree. And I, want to say maybe you can go at anytime and see a live webcam view of all the tree. Okay. It's, it's in a, it's kind of a tree, holiday tree display that is a little bit a ways away from the White House but not too far. So it's in Washington D.C. Okay. And so they that, you're gonna, it tells you exactly what day and time you can view. Your tree, like your light design. Which is awesome. Yeah, I like the coding part. Yeah. That's really, that's really awesome. And so yeah, it sort of just shows like the fundamental idea of coding. There's no actual code being written. I know producer Logan and I both agreed, we'd love to be able to see like. Show me how this show me what this code looks like and then you'd be able to see it actually there. Yeah. So you can kind of get a feeling of. Just tossed to the side as an extra. Or even yeah or just like as an extra or whatever. But it's really neat there's a whole bunch of different projects on there. If you go to made with code. Dot com. And you can. And who's this do, who's doing this again? Google. Okay. So Google and then,. And there's a whole bunch of. They, they have charities and other. Like, they really, they raise a lot of money. I think they've raised over $40 million for charities that help girls get into STEM. Wow, cool. Which is pretty cool. But they're also, I mean, they're very inclusive. It's like, if anybody wants. To come do this you could do it. So you should go over there. If you have kids or if you are a kid at heart and you just want to make your own little Christmas tree light design it's really simple, super basic. You're not gonna be able to write I love Margot Robbie on your Christmas tree and have it, you know, light up. Well I do it on the one in my house. You do, you can do that at your house. Yeah, but that's fantastic. [CROSSTALK] It's really cool. It's really cool. It's really, really cool. So check out maviscode.com. Help 'em out, if you are so inclined, if you're feeling very charitable. You can always check out a STEM, a STEM program to donate to this holiday season. Always helpful. Get people into, get kids into Engineering, Science, you know, Math, all that, all that great stuff. Get 'em all into it. And they also get to have this, like, special day you get to feel a part of, like, the White House, and whatnot. Oh, yes. They'll get to just go and see, like, their tree, like, light up, which is really neat. So, it's also. Great news story find, really cool. So that's it for our headlines, which means we have a Japan is the best kind of weird. Oh, this is the best though. I picked one out, so we gotta take a quick break but we'll be right back with that and of course your user feedback from yesterday and our phonetographer of the day, so don't click away. Tomorrow Daily. Welcome back to the show everybody. It is time, for another round of Japan has the best kind of weird, which we still don't have a graphic for. And we still need to do more often. Because like, We do. These are definitely, cause we try to pick articles that you can like share with people. You can be like. Hey you never believe. This cool video. But yeah. So sharable. I wanna tell everybody. But we have the robot, the worst robot fight club ever yesterday. I'm sad you weren't here for that. Aw. Were you. They had a shoe box robot that was fighting with personal massagers as legs. [LAUGH] All right, what have we got today. Today we have a shrimp gun. And I, I, that is not euphemism is any way shape or form it is an actual shrimp gun. The coolest way ever to make tempura. Okay, so here's this video. It's a, it's actually a commercial. So, if you're having shrimp. This is shrimp, yeah. Get some eggs. So we have some eggs. This is a mom and her daughter it's like a this commercial is crazy, okay? So here you go she's gonna like hit the button, boom! Okay, so [INAUDIBLE] scares you. So here goes the shrimp. They're leaving. And now they're going to get coated in flour. Done, successful, yes. There's eggs beaten up egg yolk. Got the eggs. There's a lot of waste there but there you go. Have some tempura flakes. I'll get the flakes on there. Yep, you gotta get that. And then fire. Burn and it just cooks it up. Crisple up. And then they hit a giant airbag and flops right onto the plate. [LAUGH] That's amazing! Well this so, are those the actual shrimp. I mean I don't, I don't know how much we know about the. Listen, it's an ad. So this is an ad for NCT dogomo which is a carrier in Japan. And this is to advertise their new blazing fast LTE network. So they put together this commercial. I have no idea if those shrimps are edible. Some college, some genius college kid is going to make this and I'm going. Absolutely, 100% need to make this. Go to the dorm. [LAUGH] Somebody needs to make this. They need to do this on Myth Busters. We need to send this. Yeah, yeah. To Jamie and Adama and be like, guys build this. And I honestly think this is one of those segments we should ask for people to send us stuff. Please. So if you have more. Find it send it to us. Japan is the best kind of weird. Please send them to us, we wanna look at them and freak out. And we wanna share them with everybody else that watches the show. Honestly I'd be willing to even change the name of the segment to Humans are the Best Kind of Weird if you just have some weird stuff from whatever country you live in. I'm, we're, we're totally open to that. Yep. That's fine. I mean Japan's easy. Japan is an easy target because there's always stuff like that coming out of Japan. But yeah I'm a big fan of this commercial, it makes me laugh. Boom! [LAUGH] I love how scared she gets when it. The shrimp explode out of the cannon and just I'm totally sorry if you're just listening to this. You really. This is. If you're listening, this is the thing that you should be seeing on the show. All right. It's so good. Okay. User feedback? yeah, I think so. User feedback. So yesterday in light of the terrible robot competition in Japan. We asked everybody to use hashtag #tdbadbot to tell us like, the most lame robot in the universe, the lamest robot they could think of. Okay. And you guys came up with some good ones. Okay, that's great. Ansel Rosso [INAUDIBLE] said how about the most useless machine it is a robot that when you turn it on it turns itself off- [LAUGH] I have one. He says I have one. Yeah, you like, it has a little button that pops up a hand pup, you, you click it on and a hand pops out and turns itself off. Oh, right the little Rover, yeah, yeah, I have seen that. And then Andrew wrote to us and said how about a robot that blocks your view watching TV or even your smartphone? Dun dun dun! [LAUGH] Olivia gave like. You're like, oh, you just turn and look, and there's always just some like flying robot right in front of your face. See, that's Skynet. That thing's taking over. They just start blocking stuff for you. That's gonna be how the robots take, take us down. Yeah. They're gonna drive us crazy. [CROSSTALK] We're all gonna lose our minds. I can't text my friend! Yeah. We're all gonna lose our minds cuz we can't see our screens. okay, so what do we have next [UNKNOWN] Logan. We've got ,. We've got Tony. Tony says, [LAUGH] a robot that suppose to patrol your home and protect you keep, just keeps shocking you. [LAUGH] It just walks around and shocks you. Yeah, but ve, just enough to annoy you constantly. Just enough. Ow, ow, ow. Of course, of course. Stefan wrote to us and said, a robot that is programmed to burn itself. [LAUGH] As a bonus, it should cost $2,000. I like this one that just has a candle to it's face. Like oh. [LAUGH] I'm gonna burn myself. These are my favorite like user feedback so far. They're pre, they're pretty good. And then that- Is that it? Oh, we got another? Well, we got an email from Tanner. And Tanner says, the worst robot I can think of is one with my mom's face on it that follows me around school saying really embarrassing things about me in front of my friends. Also, its volume gets louder when I'm around the girl I have a crush on. [LAUGH] I'm gonna. I think that wins. [LAUGH] That was so specific. That was so specific and really now, Tanner, I feel like I know you you. Yeah. Oh my God. I'm sorry. I cried a little bit. Great job. Did you say one yesterday, like, one that you would I think it was, like, I can't remember. I don't remember. I remember nothing. Oh man. What about you? [CROSSTALK] smart car that like one of those like a car that is robot you know operated that would drive in front of me and do the worst driving like it would slow down. Cut you off? It would cut me off. [CROSSTALK] But it would be like consistently with me and making it hard for me to drive around. That seems dangerous. Yeah. All right. It would like even fall behind me and sometimes turn up. I would be like stupid robot calling. Shock I'm getting pulled over. Yeah, so there you go. Mine wasn't as good but. That's a pretty good one. Yeah, annoying robot cop car type thing. Well time for our last user feedback. Which is our phonetographer of the day. Your mic's going completely insane. Think I got it. It's my first day, you gotta Your first day back from pizza espionage. I understand. OK. Can't talk about it. It's, it's cool. Just, people get Mess up my Fallout shirt. YouTube's gonna make fun of you for that. They're gonna be like what is going on with Khail's neck. [UNKNOWN] All right. Going out of it. All right what else we got? All right our Phonetographer of the day is Josh. C. And, he wrote to us. Sent us this picture. Said love the show, keep it amazing. I took this picture a couple weeks ago along with many, many others that I will overload you with soon at Oh cool! Roath Park Lake in Cardiff. It's a beautiful place and it's the first place I went to test my iPad Air 2 camera. So technically it's a tablet picture. Not a phone with a surprise smiley. Hopefully the prettiness of this one and the other will perswade you. To put them in the show and change a few cnet opinions of tablet phonetographers. You can still get annoyed. Nice. You can still get annoyed at those iPad concert game filming people though. That is just mean to the people behind them. Definitely. All right. The photo, the photo has a chrome filter, makes the water bluer. That's it. It does make, it was a very blue photo. It was a very nice photo of the swan. But he, as much as we are. Disappointed him. He made a really good point that that is a really great photo. It is. Okay, fine. I just don't wanna picture him taking it. No, I'd, I would imagine you're using a phone right there. Yeah. Not an iPad. It looks great and, and he's right. I mean, and I like the [CROSSTALK] It does look really nice. I like the blue as well It's a very nice camera. I get it. I get it. I'll, I will [CROSSTALK] Does it get wet? Half forgive you. This is my new favorite. Is that your new favorite?>> My new favorite. Everyone loves a swan. Yeah. My. My new favorite [CROSSTALK] Yeah. If you want new [UNKNOWN] kills your favorite you can email us tomorrow at cnet.com with a link to your picture, your phonetography or I guess your. How to [CROSSTALK] <<Faux, faux tablet, faux tablet, faux tablet? Anyway, you can email us tomorrow at Cnet.com and you can also send us your hashtag of the day. If you absolutely hate email, that's cool too because you can find us on social media. We are tomorrowdaily on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and tomorrowdailytv on Google+. <<And Jai Courtney if you're on YouTube watching this. Don't forget to subscribe, also if you're not [INAUDIBLE]. If you're not [INAUDIBLE] subscribe anyway. But why would you wanna be? And then also, you can go to iTunes and you know follow the podcast. Yeah. Rate and review us. And give us good ratings. I'm gonna get so much crap for the Jaicorder. There's going to be like hundreds of fans of Jai Corder fans that watch this. You're gonna get. First of all, I just want to let you know that Producer Logan told me during the break that Jai Corder fans they're outside the studio right now with pitchforks and torches waiting to take you out. I gotta get out of here. You gotta get out of here. So I'm going to be off this show. So, now go, we'll be back tomorrow guys with a brand new jacket of all the great things in geek-hop culture, gaming all of that stuff. But until then, be good humans. And we'll see you next time. Bye. [MUSIC]
