The DJI OM 5 is a must for mobile creators and home movie fans alike
Speaker 1: If you want to shoot your best video ever from your iPhone, that DGI I's latest GI the om five might be the tool for you. Let's take a closer look,
Speaker 1: Phones like the iPhone 12 Promax or Samsung galaxy S 21 ultra can already shoot amazing video that will capture your travels beautifully. But if you want to take your video production to the next level, then you may want to consider investing [00:00:30] in a stabilizing gimble and D G's latest model. The om five is a great compact option to go for. Gimble's like this use motors to keep your phone absolutely rock Eddie, smoothing out those hands shaking movements that you might have if you were just holding your phone like this and this new gimble does the job very well and has a few key features that I think make it a great option for vloggers or other mobile creatives. So here then is what I like about the DGI. Om, five first [00:01:00] up is its pocket friendly design. The joy of filming on your phone is that you don't have to carry masses of extra gear with you.
Speaker 1: So the idea of having to pack some enormous stabilizers, such as DJ's own professional RS two here somewhat defeats the object of traveling light with just your phone, but thankfully the on five employs as very clever folding design, which means it can pack down into something small enough to comfortably fit in your jacket pocket. That means you can always have it available for when creativity strikes. [00:01:30] And even if you do check it in a backpack it's 290 gram weight means that you will not feel bogged down. If you're carrying this around all day, the phone attaches using this little magnetic clamp here that just clicks on and clicks off. That's really handy, cuz it means that the gimble itself can pack down even smaller. And you can leave this clamp on your phone because it's so small that you won't really notice it in your pocket.
Speaker 1: So what about the actual performance? Well, the om five stabilization is mostly excellent smoothing out all, but the worst [00:02:00] of those hand movements, I found it did a great job working with my iPhone 12 pro max using any of the zoom lenses. It definitely gave the footage a much more slick, professional feel. My early review model did have the odd little shaky quirk, but sometimes just turning it off and on again was all it needed to sort it right out. I was impressed at how good the footage looked and I would definitely consider using something like this and filming on my phone for my own YouTube channel battery life is pretty great too, with DGI claiming about six hours of [00:02:30] use from a 1.5 hour charge. And from my own use, I'd say that is about accurate. And six hours is really a lot of filming that you can do with a single charge.
Speaker 1: I reckon that if you give it a full charge before you went on holiday, you probably wouldn't need to give it another the charge until you get home. A neat new feature with the om five is the built-in selfie stick pull on the top. And the GI section will extend away from the handle by almost nine inches, which not only helps you get better selfies, but also allows for some much more creative shooting. [00:03:00] I find it particularly great for getting low down shots and I can hold the gimble upside down and zoom the camera along the ground or through grasses. As I'm walking along, the Gibo automatically adjusts for this position and you can start and stop recording using the buttons on the handle, setting up professional gimbles with full as DSLRs can be an absolute nightmare of balancing everything out just right, but the om five setup is dead simple.
Speaker 1: You pretty much just pop the clamp in the middle of your phone and then slap that [00:03:30] onto the gimble. Once you turn it on, it will automatically adjust for the weight of your phone. Now I tested this with the iPhone 12 pro max, and this is a big phone and the Gibo coped with it. No problem at all. There aren't many buttons on the handle itself, but the ones that are there are very comfortable to reach with your thumb and give very quick access to things like changing from landscape to portrait orientation. For those of you into your vertical to videos, Ooh,
Speaker 2: Look at it.
Speaker 1: The om five comes with a, any tripod [00:04:00] in the box, which is great to act not just as an extra handle for the Gibo itself, but of course, as a tripod. So you can stand the phone up when you're doing those long time lapses, you can also get an alternative phone clamp. This one features L E D lights on the front designed to help light up your face. If you are shooting in low light conditions, this is an optional extra, and it will cost you so might not be to everyone's tastes. One thing it doesn't have is any way to attach an external microphone. Now I think this is a bit [00:04:30] of an oversight for something which is aimed at vloggers without an external microphone. You're forced to record your audio only using your phone's built in microphones and as anyone who's tried of filming in windy conditions, nose, that doesn't always work out too well.
Speaker 1: What I'd love to see is a way of attaching a small microphone like the road video micro. So you can get much better quality audio. As you are filming. There are various third party clamps you can get, which literally wrap around the handle, but it's not an elegant solution. [00:05:00] So I'd definitely like to see D work on something here. Overall. I do like the om five and it's a solid option to consider. If you want to give your phone videos a bit more of a polished look, YouTube bloggers who rely on your phone for filming are well catered for here, but it's simple. Operation also means it's great for those of you who just want better looking footage of your kids playing at home. But what do you think two DGI I's new GI? Is it something for you or are you happy just holding your phone in your hand? Like anyone else? Do you let me know your thoughts in the [00:05:30] comments below and make sure to keep it seen next for a lot more.
