The Carfection team picks their highlights of the 2018 Detroit Auto Show

Cars
Welcome to the Detroit Autoshow 2018, and this is our roundup of all the good, the bad, and the ugly that we haven't featured in individual films. I'm gonna start off on the Infiniti stand. They've got two concepts here, but this is the one that's got me really excited. This is possibly my favorite thing at the entire show. It's called the Prototype 9, and as you can see, it's inspired by a Sort of 1930's racer. And it was a proper sort of skunk works project apparently, it wasn't sort of them trying to instill history into infinity or anything like that. It was just something that they were dueling away and they thought we can do [INAUDIBLE] with that. So it's electric, the bonnet is [INAUDIBLE] but the rest of it is hand beaten. And it's got electric motors underneath it and batteries and it does actually work as well. Anyway, let's go and look at other stuff and we'll come back here later and have a look at the other concept on the stand. To BMW. This is the BMW stand. Now there are newer things that we'll get to in just a moment, but this is the M3 CS. I haven't seen it before, and I really like the idea of a horse M3. The M4 is all good, but I remember driving the M3 CRT Saloon last time. Which was such a cool car and all the cooler for having the extra doors. This we know is more expensive, obviously, than a competition pack. But you get lots of Alcantara and the trick suspension. 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds, a little bit more power. The other thing, lime rock gray. Looks like you're taking it to Audi with their nardo gray. I like that, bit of subtle competition in there. So the X2 over here is the big reveal for BMW and it's above the X1 but it's actually smaller and slightly less practical. If you haven't kept up to date with the naming strategy here, then the X odd number models are slightly more practical than the X even number models. So the X6 obviously is a coupe version of the X5, X4 etc. So anyway, X2. Seems to be very well received. People think it looks more like a hatchback, really, than a small SUV. The reach is slightly smaller than the X1. And yeah, it gets a turbo charged 4 cylinder engine, 228, great horsepower, standard 4 wheel drive, or x drive. If that's your cup of tea, then great. Can't say it particularly makes me physically excited. Anyway over here, we've got a new i8. I say new, but actually it's basically the same car but it's just now got a larger capacity battery, which has gone up from 7.1 to 11.6 kilowatt hours, I think. So the petrol motor has stayed the same, but now the Electric motor is producing 141 break horse power, up from 129 before. Taking the whole thing up to 369 break horse power. The range is extended, too, from 15 to 18 miles on battery only. There's a new badge, here. It says coupe and there's a reason for that because now there's a roadster. It's just over there. And here it is, the roadster in this e copper color. Doors still swing up like that. Still art a bit of theater and then the roof that goes in here is fabric and folds away in here Targa-esque a bit like the 675LT or 570S Spider from McLaren. I really like these buttresses. Obviously, they got rid of the vestigial rear seats that you have in the coupe. It's slightly slower, to 62 miles an hour 4.4 seconds instead of 4.2. But obviously you'll be able to hear that lovely three cylinder engine all the more easily. On the Hyundai stand, they've announced a brand new Veloster and excitingly, there is an end variant which is very good news because we drove the i30 [INAUDIBLE] and it was a really genuinely very very good hot catch. There's gonna be a standard [INAUDIBLE] performance models. I like the Veloster, it was never really [UNKNOWN] sort of elements of being good before, but this really could be the one that brings out [UNKNOWN]. I love the fact it's got two doors on one side and one door on this side. It's quirky, and that's good. And it's smaller than an I30-M, so yeah. I hope they bring it to the UK, though. There's another [UNKNOWN] on the stands which looks even crazier than Look at that. This is obviously how I would chose to have most of my cars at home, looking like a Hot Wheels car. It's for the movie Antman and the Wasp apparently. Quite laughably it's actually an automatic. So there we go. It hasn't been terribly well done if I'm honest. [INAUDIBLE] On the Kia stand walk with my eyes, while they've got the Forte, over there, which is all new, but the Stinger, with various added performance, sort of, fill-its, I suppose. There's a tuner one over there, but this one's got all sort of little add ons, little aero add ons and they've sort of been bolted on, which reminds me, slightly of sort of the way they sort of riveted >Arches on in the past. It's a bit utilitarian. But actually quite cool, I think. Behind me is the Corvette ZR-1 which looks, frankly, monstrous. Four exhaust pipes. Standard. 755 brake horsepower and 715 pounds [UNKNOWN] torque from its supercharged V8 That wing as well, it's enormous. The old Zeta one was a handful on European roads. This one might not be. It probably will be though. Ford's main use here is the Bullitt Mustang which you can check out a separate video on that, but also it's the Edge ST. The Edge being a small SUV. And the ST being obviously sort of between normal and RS on the performance line. I really like the Fiesta ST, in fact I love it. It's just a brilliant car. So this, it might be an SUV I can get really excited about. It's got 375 horsepower, 2.7 liter eco-boast V6 under the bonnet. Sadly though It's not coming to the UK. Don't know why, I thought they were doing global cars these days. The Americans get the Focus RS, we don't get this. Annoying, sad. [MUSIC] So also on the Ford stand they've got, you can build your own little lego person. Build the legs here, come around and get the body. Put that in there. You get to choose your face and your head here, which is kind of cool. I've got a beard. I'm gonna with smiles, I think. Smiles. Let's put it in here, next to the old Ford GT, I think. There we go. You can have a look at our main G Wagon video by clicking on a link somewhere or just looking for it on the car [INAUDIBLE] page. But I do like this, which is in fact an old G Wagon, don't know if you can really tell. It's just fun being muddy amongst all the glitz and glamour. Anyway, there's other stuff [UNKNOWN]. We'll go over there. The new 53amg models. Here we are then in the MG CLS. 53. There are gonna be no 63 models for CLS and the E Class coupe and cabriolet. Instead, we'll get these 53 models. And what that means is that underneath the bonnet is an inline straight 6.3 liters. But the clever bit is that it's now got a 48 volt hybrid system. The motor sits between the engine and the nine speed gearbox. And it removes the need for a starter and alternator. So you can take all the belt drum stuff off the front of the engine making it smaller. It also adds an extra 21 horsepower and 184 pounds full of torque so it acts as a performance booster as well. It should be quite an interesting thing to drive I think. It's obviously a shame not getting the 63 versions, but equally. It is interesting to see how hybrid technology is going to boost performance. So I couldn't walk past the Perry Dakolv G Wagon which as won it's class with certain Jackie it to the wheel and he's signed it here. What I like about the signature is actually put a little smiley monster face. In the loop of the J. [INAUDIBLE] There's not an awful lot on the [UNKNOWN], but they have wheeled out the new A7. And whilst the look is, well you'd probably pass one on the street without realizing it was a new car. But the interior is a very nice place to be. So you got these two screens here, and this is all So haptic in fact, which is quite interesting. New sort of look steering wheel as well, with these bigger gaps down here. So yes, a nice place to be in the new A7. Somebody's left the massage seats on which is quite nice. Aah, I'll just sit here for a while. Because obviously we need another SUV concept. This is the Nissan Cross motion not X motion despite the way it's spelled and there is not really a lot to say about this either. It's well it's showing it's design language is Nissan going forward. It's six seats in three rows. Interior looks quite nice, it's got a long sort of dash with a screen in it. And there is a roof box, not a very a useful looking roof box but a roof box. Got carbon fiber everywhere. Carbon fiber grill. Carbon fiber arches. Probably not very practical, but actually it's quite good. Probably looks better than the Limitless concept. It's got autonomous technology in there. They won't actually say what autonomous technology, but some sort of autonomous technology. And now we're gonna go off on something that I like to call Truck Tangent, starting with the brand-new 2019 Silverado, seen here behind me in brand, high-country spec. It's very large. Next up on Truck Tangent, a Nissan Titan XD. It's so large I can actually lie down in it. I'd like this for my show business. Walk here, walk there, say this, say that. This is the Ford Raptor, a truck I actually really, really want to have a go in, controversially of course with a V6 in it. This is the Ford Super Duty Power Stroke and a wing mirror that's bigger than my head. [BLANK_AUDIO] An honorary addition to truck tangent is this, the Lincoln Navigator, which is frankly enormous. It even has its own fold-out step ladder so you can get up into it. Look at that. Bringing us to the end of our truck tangent. And the clear winner It is the GMC Sierra 2000 500 HD All-terrain X, as if it needed any introduction. Sadly, it's a concept. But these mat tracks are just brilliant. It's your perfect We can get away to the mountains or something. I don't know. It's pretty cool, though. We've taken a moment to come outside the show to collection of supercars, Bugatti Backquarters as they're now calling it, to show you the Chiron. Why? Because what's around here. You remember how Lamborghinis used to have those hideous bumbers. Not quite that bad, but look at these. [UNKNOWN] in America, I've seen we have to have these on it which looks a bit odd. So after truck tangent and [UNKNOWN] backwater, here we are back on the Infiniti stand at the end of our roundup. And this, the other concept that I mentioned earlier, the Q inspiration And praise be, it's not a small SUV. In fact it's a sedan, and it's got suicide rear doors. And because it's a turbo charged four cylinder, not a V6, but it produces the same power as a V6 they say, but also the frugality of a diesel engine Engine. They've managed to push those [INAUDIBLE] forward so it's free and luxurious and spacious inside and it just looks very cool. So hopefully infinity might ramp things up and produce something a little bit like this. Anyway, let us know what you think of the show, was it good, bad, indifferent, bit quiet I thought it was a bit quiet here, if I'm perfectly honest. Comment below, remember to subscribe to the channel, and press on that little bell icon so you get a notification every time we post something new, please. Thank you.
