Tech Industry
It's Thursday, May 22nd, I'm Mark Licea, and from our CBS studios in New York City, welcome to The 404. [MUSIC]. Hey everyone, welcome to [LAUGH] The 404 Show, my name is Jeff Bakalar. And I'm Justin Yu. Thanks for tuning in kids, adults, friends of all ages, thanks for joining us on the show today. We've got a lot of fun stuff to talk about, some show and tell, some emails to partake in. Mh-hm. Everyone's got a freaking opinion on the whole bandwidth cap thing. So, we're gonna have to iron out all that stuff. Real quick before Justin teases the stories in the rundown, no show tomorrow. Guess what? It's a, it's a, it's a you know it's a three day weekend, we're gonna get things started off a little earlier. Enjoy yourself. Go out and see the world. See what it's made of. See all the pleasures, okay? See all the pleasures of the world. A great big bonfire! See that. See that, okay? Inside joke, it's a good one. It is a good one. So go do that and and enjoy yourself and we will not be having a show tomorrow mostly. Yeah. So I can play Watchdogs. But no seriously. Not to play Watch Dogs. For us to memorialize the soldiers that have fought for this country. Yes. And have given their lives and their energy and their time. So. That's what Memorial Day is all about. So that you can blast enemies in a video game. Right. So I, so we could stay free and do that. And yes. Do you, you have any relatives in the military? I've had a few relatives, yeah, like in the Army. Yeah. But none that I'm really close to, or that are still in the Army. Both of my grandfathers were in the Army. Really. Yeah, my-. And you still didn't know the difference between the Marines and the Navy. Th, the Marines, they're close. Yeah, they are. my, my, I, I believe and this could just be like backlore lore. Backlore? Backlore. I believe my maternal grandfather. Uh-uh. Was a captain. Oh, wow. Which. In the army? Was a captain. [LAUGH]. And then in the Navy or something. I don't know. He was a captain apparently. That's cool. And I'm sure he had like a fun. You know a patch for it. Right. Some flare. He's got a fun patch. Some flare to represent his status. Don't disrespect him like that. I'm not, I'm not. This is how I talk. And I'm [CROSSTALK]. You're gonna be thinking about him over the weekend I'm sure. Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. Is he still with us? No? No. Okay then we'll be, we'll be thinking about him. For sure, for sure. oh, although you have a good reason to stay inside. You just told me it's going to be raining all weekend. Which kind of puts a damper on my plans. Why? I was going to go to a barbecue or maybe just do something outdoors. If that can't happen anymore I might be joining you for video games. This is the barbecue breakout weekend. Yeah. Especially in New York. You start smelling the, the charcoal. The brick. You know-. You start putting in the air conditioner in your window. Yeah. That's what this weekend's really all about. It is. Cuz those things are heavy. They are, man. You need an extra day to put that. I'm always, I'm always blown away that those things don't just like fall out of people's windows more often. Yeah. Yeah. Just kill someone. Like splatter like. Like in Billy Madison, or Happy Gilmore. Right. He's like, that you know, Mister, mister lady. I think I just killed it. Yeah. Yeah, like why doesn't that happen more often? You read this. [LAUGH]. [LAUGH] Yeah, I'm always like blown away that they're just not plummeting out of the sky, especially. It is very terrifying yeah. But that's gonna happen for me this weekend. What about you Mark? Do you have any Memorial day plans? I don't really have any plans. I'm seeing X-Men tonight and that was pretty much the only thing on my radar for the weekend. Why go tonight? And now I'm getting, what? But I know you have issues with people being enthusiastic about anything [LAUGH] but I don't know, I loved, I love X men I plan on seeing it more than once Is that coming out tomorrow, or I guess it's opening midnight. Midnight, yeah I am doing the 10 p.m screening but other than that I don't know I was maybe thinking of going to Central Park but if it's raining probably not. Wait, are you gonna dress up for this premiere? No, no, no. Yeah he goes in and dresses up as storm [LAUGH]. You have the hair for it, you have basically the same haircut. Yeah we do, yeah I always joke about doing a Rogue, a male robe cause play, she was always my, my favorite super hero. I don't think that would work, I don't think that would make anyone happy. No offense to Rogue, but your power sucks. Okay? What? Dude, she was [CROSSTALK]. She's so incredible, no, she's incredible in the comic and they completely ruined her in the movies. Because they did not do her justice. Yeah. So Anna Paquin? The worst. Yeah. She's a miserable actress but. But tell me why you think Rogue did better in the comics than in the way she was presented in the Bryan Singer films? Because when she's, when she's first introduced. Not when she's first introduced, but she, she absorbs Ms. Marvel's powers. And Ms. Marvel is invulnerable to like anything. Really? Because she's pretty much invulnerable. She can fly. She has incredible strength. So, she's basically just one of the toughest people. On top of that stuff, she permanently has those abilities. And then she can absorb any pow. She currently absorbs. And then I. Think oh, man and I know people that are listening are like oh well you didn't know, cuz cuz there's different iterations of her, later on she can recall anyone's ability that she has ever touched in the past. Oh really? She becomes sort of like an empath. So she's like-. She'd be like oh I touched Phoenix, or I touched colossus one time. What's the mortal calm that guy who's got that same power? Mortal combat gotta has the same power? You don't like become any of the characters? Shang Tsung can. Shang Tsung. Can morph into other people, but I don't know if they can take their powers. The, you can do other people's power, that is I, I'm pretty sure, regardless, so you're saying-. So I mean that, that's a pretty good reason right? I have to agree with invulnerability, and super strength, and then completely get rid of that in the movie version of her, it's just such lesser version of Rogue. In the movie Anna Pacquin is kind of this timid character who-. Yeah. Doesn't want to take off her gloves. I mean, granted she's supposed to be like-. Well. In the early stages of her super human life. And they were humanizing her a little bit more. For sure. And I think what, what was so amazing about her character is, is that she can't touch anyone and she has this like incredible vulnerability, but at the same time she can kick **** and take down all these sentinels, and she's pretty much one of the strongest mutants in the X-men. Right, right. In the movie they kind of made the Rogue character into what I think Jubilee was supposed to be in the comic books. Right. Like kind of the newcomer, like under Wolverine's wing. Like, she could've done more of it on her own. I agree. She's also invulnerable to psychics because she, you know, she has this whole thing with her psyche cuz she absorbs people's memories, and so people can't really pinpoint her cuz they're like oh, is that like all the other people that you've absorbed or is it really you? Right. I. Beg to differ. Especially in the first X-Men. But you guys have seen the, the animated series? Go on. [NOISE]. Yeah, of course. She is the major plot point of the first film. Yes. Like she is the reason Magneato can with stand his like, gigantic you know, mutinizer machine. Yeah. So, she is ultra powerful in the first one. Yeah. One thing I'm a little bummed out about, and this isn't really a spoiler, this is actually something that if, I heard-. Wait a minute, be careful here. No no, it's not a spoiler, because you, in the trailer the first Days of Future Past trailer, you see Rogue. Like, little bits of Rogue. And then, later on they announced and then then, the final trailer she was cut from it, but I guess she's, she's cut from it entirely. Oh, wow. So like, Anna Paquin. Was, was filmed for Days of Future Past, but then they ended up getting rid of it altogether. Bryan Singer was just like Jesus, she's, she sounds like the vampire thing again. We've got to get rid of her. [LAUGH] Probably. They're like, no Sookie Stackhouse in this one. So they cut Rogue, the character out of the entire movie? Or they replaced her with someone new? No, I think they were just trying to condense, they were just trying to condense and make it. It, I, I think her, her role in the movie was already. Interesting. Very small and they didn't wanna, they didn't wanna like pepper [CROSSTALK] Rogue in the movie if she didn't really have this significant part. I mean there's so many huge stars in the movie, it's just. Yeah. I always think that's strange when they have a huge actor and then they just cut her out. It happens every now and then. Yeah. Here's why I'm upset that Mark is going tonight. Because did you read your email? Yeah. Did you hear what's happening here at CBS? No. They're taking us to see this movie on a little field trip one week from today. What? Yeah! Wait a minute I didn't get that email! Yeah you get the email you do. X-men? X-men in three dimensions I'll have you know. And Oh, on movie day. Yeah, I'm like dude, don't go tonight, let's all go see it for the first time a week from today and he's like no, I'm gonna go to that also, but I'm not gonna sit anywhere near you cuz you're just be like oh, here it comes and you're gonna be like oh, my god that's crazy. No, I, I won't do any of that. I'll probably just be looking at you the entire time. [LAUGH]. Just to make sure you enjoyed it, you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed it. I hate people that do that. I won't even say anything. I'll just be like. Oh, I hate people that do that. I just wanna watch you watch it. Those are the worst types of people to go to the movies with. Like, when you're watching a comedy and every time something funny happens, you kind of slightly chuckle, you can feel the other person like looking at you for the reaction. Yeah. I hate people like that. You hate me. [CROSSTALK]. I know that's not you. You're joking around. And right that you know. No he is gonna do this. I might do it now just to annoy Jeff. [LAUGH] [INAUDIBLE]. It's gonna be a problem. We're gonna have to be separated, for this show. You know they release a bunch of the character profiles for the X-Men in the movie. Don't. Earlier this week. Yeah I don't want to hear. It's all available online. Just because it's available doesn't mean we have to like [CROSSTALK]. And, not. Spoiler but Colossus is in this movie. Oh yeah, I knew that. Yeah, and he makes, they show a couple of the scenes that he is in this preview and I won't ruin it if you don't wanna watch that part of it. But, he plays a pretty big role. Good. He looks awesome. Good. And I think that I like that is he's kind of a relatively unknown actor too, right. Do you know who is playing him? Nope. Some random guy. Yeah. Which I like. [CROSSTALK] He was, he was an X2 and, and the third X Men, right. Yeah, he's with the guy taking care of all the kids. Yeah, that maybe, yeah. Oh, he's an actor? Yeah. Think so. Cool, good for him. Alright, so that's what we're doing this weekend. Mark, you're seeing X-men. Seeing it twice. So, it feels like 64 hours. Twice. You're gonna see it twice this weekend. Not, not this weekend but I'm seeing it this Thursday and then, next Thursday, when I leave work. Fair enough. Not sitting next to you. Yeah, I'll be there. You're gonna come to that? Yeah, I'm gonna RSVP, right now, as we're talking. Great. What can we look forward to in today's rundown. Alright, so, we're gonna talk about a more human response to our phones getting bigger. You know that's like an, it's a, sort of an in-arguable trend in technology. Phones are definitely getting bigger and we're gonna have to adapt, and we're gonna tell you how that's gonna happen. Then well talk about Segway scooters and oh, a much needed upgrade to that. Finally after all these years. I mean I've been just waiting. I know you have-. And waiting for my chance to purchase one of these manacle devices. Oh, you should have gotten a mailing list notification new upgrade on the way. then, we'll talk about QR stones. Oh, I'm sorry, QR codes on gravestones. Kind of morbid story, but interesting, nonetheless. And then, we'll ask the question, in our final story, can listening to video game music at work, increase your productivity? Definitely. Yeah, we'll see. We will see, but I liked asking that question. And then, we're gonna get to a little bit of a show and tell from a gift that we got sent from a listener. Marvelous. I'm very very excited about. Great. And then we've got a few emails as well. Beautiful. Beautiful. Yeah. Alright let's do it. Alright. So, let's. You want the. Which one you want to talk about first, actually. I'm, I'm at your disposal. Okay. I'm at the mercy of you. So you lead me through this. Right. Yeah. Let's talk about this trend that we've been noticing for a long time now. And that's screen sizes on phones getting bigger. And just phones in general. Right? I mean. Like getting up to five, six inches now. I think there's a phone that's the Samsung Mega that's six inches. That's the biggest phone on record right now. But, there's actually a Mega 2 coming out that's gonna be seven inches. And phones are getting so big and this isn't particularly news, but there's actually a new category of phone and tablet hybrids called a-. Phablet. Yeah, I hate using that word so I'm making you say it. It's funny because it, it, whenever I read the word phablet, it's PH. Yeah. And it just like reminds you of phat, when people used to say phat. Oh, what oh, like ph [LAUGH]. Yeah, phat, that was a thing, where did that go? Where, that's gone, that's gone. [LAUGH] Yeah, it's like where all the bad 80s slang used to go [INAUDIBLE]. Nobody says phat anymore. Very 90s. Right? I never knew anyone who said phat, like, in real life. No? That was maybe, it was an East Coast thing. Everyone was like, Dude, check out that dude's car. How phat is that? Yeah. Yeah man, people were saying that. Mark? That was definitely a West Coast thing too, at least in Vegas for like two years. Along with tight. Tight, right? I still say tight. Oh, yeah. But I think tight is still, still relevant now. And there was another one. Dope, dope! I say dope too. You say dope, still? I'll say dope, alright. [LAUGH]. Is that bad? No. I'm like writing emails for PR people, I'm like oh, that looks dope. Thanks. [LAUGH]. Are they like, are they like brazing that out? Do you say kowabunga, where like cows. No. It's way tubular dude. It's not like [CROSSTALK]. That's why I don't use slang, actually I use sick. Yes you do. You say sick all the time. Sick is the new tight. [LAUGH] [CROSSTALK]. We're all sounding super old and lame right now. No I'm just worried now, that like someone out there is printing out all my emails, be like look at this reject. This dopehead. [LAUGH] How many times does he say dope in an email? What an idiot? What a loser? But the fact of the matter is phones are getting bigger right? And we as humans we need to sort of evolve and adapt to make sure that we are able to use the devices as they get larger. And so of course what that means is that inventors are on the case and in this case it's Japanese inventors, they've come up with a new product. Oh yeah. This is, yeah I want this. Bring this up on the screen, so that, it's really funny. A new product called the Phablet Finger. [LAUGH] The Fablet Finger sold on the market in Japan right now is a fake finger that sits like a single digit glove on your thumb. Almost looks like something you would buy in a Halloween store for your zombie costume. Right. I think Pee Wee Herman uses it in Pee Wees Big Adventure. Right. And the thing is this rubber finger actually has a stylus running through the length of it. And it comes out of the top so, there's a little nub of a stylus that pokes out of the top of this finger. And when you wear it. It's good. Gives you comfortable access to the length of the entire screen, but it only extends your finger by 15 millimeters. Very specific. Not a lot of, like, distance. You're not, it's like 15 millimeters is really what's holding people back from making the most out of their phablet? It's proportional, so as the phones get bigger. This time we'll also get there. [LAUGH]. Why is Japan so weird? I mean it's only $14. I know but. [CROSSTALK]. Need that extra growth [CROSSTALK]. You can't sit here. And be like man, only in Japan. No cuz it's not just happening in Japan. I know, I understand but like maybe Japanese people have like tiny fingers. I don't know. Could be, yeah. Do you guys like this trend of, of bigger phones? I'm not into it personally. I think it's okay. Cuz I like to be able to access the entire screen with my natural finger. And you got a little. Little chicken thumbs. I got, I got decent thumbs. You actually do have, I've got like these piano fingers. Big hands. But yeah, no, I not into the, the huge screens. Why, are you? I, no, I'm not. I had the note and I, I really wanted to like the whole big phone trend, but. I don't. I don't like it. I would try to bring it to the gym, it does not sit in the pocket comfortably and the note too, we used to be the biggest at the time and now it's not. I just can't imagine having a phone bigger than, than that. That's true. You know I have the, the Nexus five. In that upgrade you jump in the size of the screen was huge cuz you went from that like Nokia to the. Oh yeah. Was that directly? From there to the Note? [CROSSTALK] No I didn't have the Nokia. I had. Oh I had a. I don't remember. I've been through so many phones. You got a like a smaller like flip out keyboard phone. And then you went from that to like a giant screen. That must of been a big deal. It wasn't a, it wasn't a flip out but anyway the transition to the, the Note 2, I gave it a year, just not feeling it. And I, and I have an, an, not, I don't have an issue but I just Personally do not dig the bigger phones. They don't really fit into your hand. And then you can't. Yeah, I know. You can't move your, your finger. Yeah. Across the screen. You have to, like, readjust your hand. You have to, like, readjust your hand to get, like, the extra thumb-age. Yeah. I can say I ever really understood why they're so popular. I feel like, may, partially it's because people wanna watch stuff on their phone. But then. I mean, maybe if you're watching it on the train that sort of makes sense, but then if you're home [CROSSTALK] it just makes sense for me to watch it on the TV. You know, you're right. But for me it's just the pocket thing. The pocket thing is such a big deal for, for guys it is. You know, people who don't carry around purses. So. All right, well thumbs up to this crazy, whackadoo [LAUGH] Japanese invention. [LAUGH] Yeah, I really like this though, I wanna see if people actually use it. What's a good caption for this for today, like what should I have her say? Oh, you're gonna, you're gonna put her thumb up on the machine there? I mean she's begging for it. [LAUGH]. Going, you know like, it just needs to have some ridiculous caption. Do you remember like a long time ago we talked about the story out of South Korea, where they were using snack sausages. Yeah, they were using sausages. As and yeah, because apparently like the meat inside the sausage casing-. Conducted just the right amount of electricity. The same amount of electricity as a finger would, and they were using that in the winter months. So they wouldn't have to take off their gloves [CROSSTALK]. Right. And all the trains smelled like bacon. Hm. And salami. Do you guys also remember, years back, it was on your show. You talked about this dude, who had created a, it was almost like a sleep no more mask? It sort of looked like that. Oh, yeah. And it was a, basically like a nozzle. [CROSSTALK] It went over your nose so you could. You could wear it in like the bath tub. I think there was like a video of him and her like emotional photos of him in a bathtub and he was using the nose stylus, or whatever it was called, to do stuff on his phone [CROSSTALK] Is that really what it was called. I don't know what it was called. I remember that now. It was like that old Italian theater mask with like the long nose. Yeah. And the eyes wide shut thing. Right. It was pretty awesome. I know you can make your own stylus by wrapping like a, a, sock around a pencil. And that will conduct electricity like through the sock. In order to like poke-. Yeah, because like my sock pencil style. You can just get like an electronic thread, or a third-party stylus. Yeah, like metallic threading is fine too. Alright, great, great job. Ridiculous. alright, let's talk about this Segway thing, because we haven't talked about it since what, 2001. It's amazing how irrelevant segues have become. They've just really been associated with like mall cops. Yeah. And like campus security. So for people that, I mean it's, it's good that you brought that up, that's basically what we're talking about today, but for people that don't remember the whole hyper end Segway's. Woo. Can you explain? It wa, Segway was like, it was called like, the people mover. Yeah. And you just like, you just, it was a two wheeled, sort of, contraption that you stood on, and you, you know, sort of,. Leaned in directions that you'd wanna go. Yeah, yeah. They were marketing it as like a replacement to walking. You'll never have to walk again once you buy our Segway. Right because you-. Because it had like gyroscopes and anti-sway things inside of it. Yeah here's a bunch of buttholes on an Segway right here. Nobody can ever fall off a Segway and then George Bush fell off a Segway. Yeah I don't know what happened, but It just, it wasn't popular probably because of how freaking goofy you looked on it. Yeah. And it also was. It just didn't go much faster than walking. So that was the problem. Yeah, and then like why were you doing that and not walking? Or. And was there like a big anti-walking campaign where everyone's like oh, walking is gonna be the death of us. Yeah. I think that they were hoping that like, dotcoms and stuff would start using this to get around campus, but. It sort of took off, but you're right. Like it basically. They basically launched a market inside security. Yeah. Right, they are like mall cops and things like that, I am pretty sure Paul Blart in that movie used a Segway. Right and I will actually see them in Manhattan too, I'll see like Tours? I'll see, I'll see, no not tours. Oh you have never seen that, I've seen like big tours of like 30 people on Segways. No I have seen like, I'll see like legit police officers on them sometimes. Actually I'm in favor of cops on segways as opposed to cops on horses, especially in the city, I'm way into that. I actually think horses make a lot of sense. Really have you ever seen a horse cop in pursuit. Like in action I've only ever seen them take a dump on the side of a street. Well the horse is gonna stop dumping. Like you see them galloping through like lane splitting. [LAUGH]. No but like dude that's the cool thing about. We, we really do need that. I'm telling you they are, not that I'm like pro like this like over seeing eye, but like you need them because they. Really, yeah, I know. Really are intimidating. They can see everything, like they're that much taller up off the ground, they can see everything. Crowds of people, that's really important. Mm-hm. Yes, horses, horseback cops are important. [CROSSTALK]. The height I could get on board with, but the unpredictability of the horse in an environment like that is what freaks me out. No, dude. No. Those are trained freakin' animals dude. Are they? The horse isn't all of a sudden going to be like [NOISE] and chase a bus or something like that. I mean I'm not, I'm not arguing it from like an animal rights standpoint because I think if you're going to talk about that then you definitely want to talk about the carriages in central park. Yeah. That's like first, but. Sure. Yeah, I guess from like a security standpoint, I guess they're kind of intimidating, but. They are, dude, a horse up close is scary. That cop by himself should be intimidating enough. If you're not afraid of that guy with a gun, and be afraid of this. Yeah, we don't see eye to eye on this. I was, I had a conversation about this a couple weeks ago. I'm with you with the whole horse carriage thing, I think that's antiquated ****. Yeah. But, the horse, the cop on horseback so, it's like [CROSSTALK]. I've just never seen them do anything. Right I've never seen a pursuit. Nothing bad ever happens around them like you said. Yeah. I never see them run after anyone. Nothing bad happens around them, people are scared to commit crimes around horses, because you are not outrunning a frigging horse even if you are in a car. Yeah but how is a horse going to maneuver like if you are, if you like to run. If you're running and you're maneuvering through traffic, a horse is, a horse is not going to go through traffic. They can turn around. What do you mean? They can't rotate on a single axis. They have to, they have to move their entire body around. Dude, they're awesome. Horses can't look behind them. Yes, they can man. Look at them, they wear a riot shield. They're freaking bad ****, dude. Can you pull up this riot shield horse here. Oh, wow. That's dope. I guess. I don't know. I don't see it. There needs to be like video proof of a cop on a horse taking down someone in the city. You ever see True Lies? Yeah, oh my God, you're right. That's what I'm saying. I wanna see a horse climb on top of a car to get to a perpetrator. I don't know what they're capable of doing, but I'm telling you there's something. Like yeah,. There's a rea-. if you're in central park,. There's clearly a reas-. Then yes, a horse is worthwhile. There's a reason we still have' em. There's a rea-. But still on Fifth Avenue, like why are they? There's a reason they're still there. They're not just like doing it for, like, the novelty's sake. Uh-huh. And for people to take photos of that. There's a reason that they're around in huge crowded city areas. They're not like downtown, they're in Times Square. Yeah. Where there's a lot of people and. Butter Nuts. Right, exactly. I, [LAUGH], haven't seen one, actually in action. Until I do, I'm gonna reserve judgement. All right, fair enough, man. You ever been on a horse? Yeah, I've been on a horse. Yeah, they're amazing. Oh, I love horses. I don't necessarily think they're good for law enforcement. What are they good for then? Just running around a circle real quick? Yes, they're good for being animals. Right, well, you need to use them for something. [LAUGH]. We do? We can't just let them be animals? No. Like we do with every other animal. You can't have an uncontrolled horse population roaming this planet, you kidding me? It be anarchy. How did we get into this conversation again? I don't, Segway. Oh ya Segways. Horses are better then Segways that's the bottom line. Yup, right, right, right, right horses greater than Segways. But in this case, wait where was I? Oh yeah. So, back in 2001 they debuted, right. They sorta fell into obscurity when the, guy who owned the corporation, the guy who bought the Segway corporation off the inventor. Mm. He died in 2010. Right, right. You've probably heard this before. Yeah he rode his Segway off a cliff accidentally of course, not a suicide. Right. Very ironic. It is and it's I am sorry for laughing. Exactly and it's listed in Wikipedia under ironic deaths. It's just crazy. Like there's a whole separate category in Wikipedia of ironic deaths. Right. And he is at the top. Right. Like the inventor of chewing gum choked on gum. Right, exactly or the guys who invented, oh, Ben and Jerry died from. Heart disease. Right. Or like diabetes. Same thing. Right. So anyway, he died, and so he kinda fell into obscurity after that. Fast forward until this weekend, where they debuted their new product. Mm. We're talking about the SE3 Patroller. Oh yeah. Check this thing out if you're watching the video. Oh, that's hot. They added another wheel. Hot Segway action. They added a second wheel to the rear axle, making it a total of three wheels. Whoa, Pretty cool. So now it's two in the, two in the back, one in the front. I'm pretty, you know what I want to look at this, I was thinking I'm pretty sure they have vehicles already, like ATVs? Yeah. Two wheels in the front, one wheel in the back. Yeah, they're, yeah. What's the difference between this and that? Well, I don't know, you don't look like such a putz on those as you will on this thing. Yeah, this looks more like. I don't know, what would you call this? A schmuck-mobile? What I don't understand is, like, don't these not move very quick. No. Right. Yeah. [CROSSTALK]. And the only thing I can understand why you would want to use this. Is because you have terrible balance. I like the caption vroom, vroom. Vroom, vroom yeah Segway. So, it's basically. You're not getting a half a vroom out of this thing. Yeah it's making no sounds when you start this up. It's just going Electric cars make more noise. A golf cart is more intimidating than that thing. [LAUGH] At least that could run you over. Are those the only two pictures? There should be a couple more. That's it. No? No, that's it. Ok, cool CNET. [LAUGH]. Blame a man [UNKNOWN]. Yeah, there's way more photos on the, on their website. But go and check that out if you're really interested. But it's basically targeted at what you said earlier, police agencies, mall cops, security businesses, etcetera. Cuz it's $12,000. It's a lot of money. Yes. So you're not buying it yourself, you're, the security of the company you work for is buying it. Yeah, no surprise here there are a few cup holders you can get added to it if you go for the premium package. Yeah, and a donut rack. [LAUGH]. Yeah, definitely. The cup holders are no joke, too like thats real. And that's how you know they aren't going very fast either. Because if you put a cup of coffee in it it's not going to spill. [CROSSTALK]. No, do I chase that shoplifter, or do I enjoy my Java Moon, Venti. I think I enjoy the coffee. So good. Nice. So that's the segue, if you really into not walking then buy this thing. How do you segue out of a segue story? [LAUGH] I am not going to do it. Speaking of morbid. That's a segue, that's a segue! Yeah that is the segue. You were suppose to just stop one complete thought, and then just go right into another one. Couldn't let you get away with that. All right, fair enough. This is really morbid, this next story, but it's kinda cool. You see more QR codes everywhere now, right? I used one over the weekend cuz I noticed they put QR codes on the bus stops in New York. Yeah. Which I think is really cool. I was actually gonna be like no they're going away. I thought so to until this weekend. Yeah they put them on all the bus stops so you can see when the next one's coming. It's really cool there's like a real time map of them actually moving toward you. But I did feel like they kind of had this like rise in popularity over the last, I don't know, like two years ago or something and then they dropped off you don't really see them as much anymore. Right because they're stupid. They're, I think the problem to is because they don't, not work, because they do. There inelegant. There inelegant and also you see them a lot in places that where they just don't work, like on billboards? Right. Like you see a lot of them. [CROSSTALK]. Like I'm driving in a car. Like no one's getting up there to scan it ten feet away. Right, exactly. Or, you see them a lot in subway stations underground where you don't get service anyway. Right. The hell's the point of it? I think a lot of people the, the, the advertisers jumped on it because it was, like, a, it was like a shortcut into giving them, like, tech cred. Right. Right, right. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? They were, like, they were like, oh, if we just have a bar code, people will think we're, like, hip. Yeah. And on it. So, a QR code is basically this little, bar code. It's a bar code, basically. Mish-mash, yes. That you put on to an advertisement. You use a, an app on your phone to scan it, and that brings up more information. Right, it's basically just a link in the real world. Right, right. There you go. But really easy and so QR codes have gone away, but we're starting to see the technology being used in different places. Hm. Now and the latest place being used is in graveyards. What? So a lot of people have started integrated QR codes into their gravestones, which is kind of an interesting concept. It is, very upsetting. so, yeah, I mean, the idea is that these QR Codes they're technically meant to live on forever by memorializing your loved ones. So when you go to a gravesite, it will basically link visitors to an online memorial. Hm. Of the deceased. So that can include photos, for example, information, text, an obituary. And then links to their social media account, where you can, you know, find a lot of history about. It's sad man. Not to mention there's like a young kid's grave we're looking at too. Oh was it? Yeah, this dude was like super young man. All right, another point to CNET for putting that on the front page. Yeah. This is in the, this is The Atlantic. Oh, this is The Atlantic. Still, it's a bummer. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Very morbid, but, there's a big market for it. And this is one of the last places you're starting to see more QR codes pop up. It's not just a sticker either. A lot of these QR codes are actually chipped into the granite or. Yeah. Limestone, whatever they use. See this I'm okay with. [LAUGH]. One, one, I'm okay with a dead cat. Two, I'm okay with, like, a dead cats grave having a QR code. Yeah. Because we. I like how the QR codes bigger than the actually cat itself. Right. You know, look, Oreo. He hung around for about, you know, 12 years, he was a good guy. Little overweight. Why don't you take a snapshot of this QR code and you can relive his life. That's cute. Yeah. Not down to enough of the specific day at this point, it's just, uhh, May to July. [LAUGH] That's how long Oreo was with us. Yea, no words or anything, just here's a name. [CROSSTALK] And he died sometime in July. [LAUGH] The other benefit of having QR codes on gravesites is that a lot of times as generations, you know, go through life and death. It's easy to forget where these grave stones are. Mm. Especially if you don't buy plots of land that are right next to each other. Sure. And so rather than writing it down in your family history or whatever. Or just knowing it. On a piece scrap of paper. Cuz it's a deceased relative of your. Right. But if it's a cat then you may forget. Oh, the cat I, don't care where I buried the cat. So, [LAUGH]. You just sorta do that on the side of a road. This online record. You drop a pin. That's all. No, that was in a guy's backyard. So, you, there's really no visitors going through that area. That's true. That's true. But yeah, so, that's the thing and you know, if you want to read this article. It's kind of interesting. The, Atlantic goes into more detail. Very long. About the permanence of these QR codes. Right cause that's a good question. The problem is that when you have a QR code, not only do you need to maintain the website that it points to. But you got to update it. You go to pay the domain for whatever renewal fees there are every year, etcetera. And let's, there's no assurance that QR codes will last forever, and that's a big issue as well. Yeah, like the internet as we know it now may not be around forever. You never know. It may not be around another five years. Not if net neutrality goes away. It's all cyclical. There it is, bringing it back. Okay. Very interesting article coming up. What about it? What about listening to video game music? You wanna hear it? Yeah, that's the question. Can listening to video game music at work increase your productivity? Short answer, no. Oh really? No, I don't know. I wanna know what you guys think. I want your opinion cuz you obviously play more video games than I do. Yeah, Mark, what's your, let's pull one up for you. Yes quick back. We're talking about this article on fast company it's a profile about a young coder. And he listened to, he used to listen to classical music at work, but he started noticing his productivity going down, so he switched over to video game music. I think it's kinda interesting cuz he only uses stuff that he's really familiar with, so nostalgia music from like the early 2000s, when he was a young kid. Well that's what I was going to say. Like if you play video game music to someone that doesn't play video games or has no connection to it then it's like what's the point. It has to, it has to be, it has to be like a game that you're interested in. It has to bring back memories. See. I don't, I don't know if I 100% agree with that because like I think it's contextual. Right, like before a hockey game, I'm not listening to, like, jazz. You know, I'm listening to like speed metal. Right. Like I need to be jacked up. I don't necessarily know, you know, who the band is. Yeah. But I just like flip, you know, if we're in like XM you turn to like [CROSSTALK]. The Prodigy channel. No, [INAUDIBLE] the names of XM stations are so ridiculous. There's like one that's called like Boneyard. Yeah. And it's just like heavy metal. And that's what I, you know, the average person I would think to get psyched up for something. Yeah. You'd wanna listen to. I think all video games, as long as it's like the ambient style gaming music and not like your, like chiptunes. Yeah. Sort of thing that might be good for working. But yeah, what do you guys listen to? Well here let's, let's listen to this one real quick. This is my personal one of my personal favorites of all time. This soundtrack. [MUSIC] Contra is so good, right? How good is Contra? Mark? Mark, see Mark, see he's too much into it. He can't even answer me [LAUGH]. Are, are you playing along to the beat of Contra right now? You're gonna make everyone have a seizure. [LAUGH] you son of a ****. [LAUGH]. Ih, the internet is freakin out. Mark. Yo. What's your favorite game, do you think? Let's see, I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy soundtrack. Yeah. I actually used to go to the store that had the Final Fantasy track, dot sound track. This was like during the Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, during that era. And I would buy them and I would listen to them obsessively. I also really liked the Tetris music. I loved the Mario music. I loved the Halo soundtrack. Halo has some awesome music. Mass Effect has some incredible music too. I don't know, I guess it's kind of what you were talking about with nostalgia. It sort of has to tie in with, my experience playing that particular game. Like, all those games I, I love and are very close to my heart, you know? I, I think it, it could work for or against you. Like, if you play, if you play music from a game that you really enjoyed, that could motivate you because, you know, if it's like, upbeat music or something positive, then it'll, you know, inspire you to work more. But, if it was a particularly stressful game that you had a hard time playing, you may associate that music with a level of difficulty that's beyond your control. For sure, but you probably wouldn't seek it out in that circumstance, yeah. [CROSSTALK] It would be like the opposite effect of listening to classical music. I agree, what are some of your favorite Jeff? I think I really did like, when I think of theme songs I think of like old school ones, just because like I just finished playing Wolfenstein and that's like all just heavy metal, with like a score, it's like someone did that for the game. For the new Wolfenstein? Yeah, it's like a very grindhousy sort of thing. But I was always a big fan of Super Mario 2, the music in Super Mario 2 was like really strange. Is that the weird one that we were just talking about yesterday? Exactly, exactly, just like a very strange compilation of music. But yeah I have been in contra for sure. Contra is so good. But I don't you know I think like. The Midi era. What's that, yeah Midi for sure, like when it was all that stuff and I know like a lot of the chiptune stuff is trying to emulate that, but. I don't, there's something about the music back then and even like Zelda. I feel like now [CROSSTALK] you know, you remember listening to a video game soundtrack now and it could easily be a, a mov. A movie. A movie soundtrack. Yeah, of course. You know, there's, there's almost no difference. They all have strings, and percussion. Mm-hm. That sound lie real life instruments. Although, you would, you'd remember. I remember certain soundtracks like, Jurassic Park, obviously. Usual Suspects, I, I remember a lot of that iconic score. Mm-hm. So, there, there, you know. I think it, it's tougher for it to make a lasting impression on you. Here's a,. Final fantasy nine that had the most amazing soundtrack, I was obsessed with that soundtrack. Here you want to hear it? Yes please [MUSIC]. Here's some that for you right now, you getting that? Yes. And then there's also another one here. He's cutting to the music, this crazy person. And, you wanna hear the street fighter one? What is it, street fighter two? It's just street fighter, every like character select. Right. Go to the street fighter one. Yeah, it's loaded. It's just taking it's sweet **** time loading up. That's actually, I mean. Final Fantasy nine has a ton of good tracks, I feel like that's one of the. [MUSIC]. To me personally, it's not one of my favorites. You hearing it? Bring it down a little bit. This is Ryu. I mean if your trying to get pumped up for a sporting event or like, I don't know, a job interview where you have to go in and crush it. I think so, I think that's smart. Did you guys ever play a game called Fez? Yeah, of course. Well, I don't even know what's the game Fez is about. I've never played them before, but I downloaded the soundtrack a few months ago, like way after the fact. And it's really good. It is real good. Like you know, that, I guess that's like the, the proof right there is if someone who's never played the video game before really like the soundtrack. Here's the soundtrack. Still, I love it, it's super, I, I worked with all kinds of [INAUDIBLE]. Sort of half synthesized, half orchestral. And the game is like a throwback, it's like a 8-bit throwback. Oh really? Is it like a puzzle based game cuz that's what I imagine it to be. It's a puzzle based game that's like dimensional so like the gimmick in the game is that you can like turn the world 360 degrees, in quarters though. Yeah. So you, every time you turn, I'm sorry, a 90 degree turn, so every time you turn it's 90 degrees. Yeah. There's like a mathematical, cerebral element [CROSSTALK]. Oh, for sure, it's a great game. Fez is great, right on, cool. But yeah, go and check this out. We'll put notes in the run down to all the music we talked about. Yes, we shall. All right, we've got time for maybe one or two quick, although these are not quick and, and I don't wanna take anything away from anyone. Thank you so much for writing in about net neutrality issues and MVNO issues. I know people, and data capping. People are super passionate about this, so thank you. I've gotten like 50 emails that are like 500 words each, so it's tough to read. [INAUDIBLE]. Every single one of them. The first one is from Jason, he is an MVNO user. He says that he tried almost every MVNO available and can say first hand that if you find the right one, it's the way to go. He uses a service called Straight Talk, I think that I'm familiar with. Is that like a Wal-Mart thing? Yea, maybe. I think it's a Wal-Mart thing. And I've used it for years now, they have phones that you can buy and if you do research you can find that they bought into every single carrier. So they are paying Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-mobile some sort of fee for their users to use their network is the way I understand this. Mm-hm. The phones are, they have great phone options, but it's good for the user that doesn't' use a lot of data. and, but, but you need specific coverage for your area. So look, he goes into like the specifics of everything. Here's the math. He, here's what he was paying on Verizon for two and a half gigs a month. He paid $200 for the upgrade, plus the $30 for the activation, which came to 2160, which is $90 a month for two years. The total was 2390 for two years. That's what he paid, $2,390. When he was using straight talk with unlimited and three gigs of LTE data. He spent, what? Million. Which is a lot of letters. He spent he spent 550 on a Note III. That's a big investment, but then only 1080, which is 45 bucks a month for 2 years. And for the year, he only spent $1630, which is a savings of $760. Wait, can you say that again? You're gonna write it all down? [LAUGH] Just kidding. You guys both have unlimited data on your phones, I'm assuming. No, I don't. I don't. I have like 4 gigs, I think. Yeah. I don't even come close. And yours is how much a month, if you don't mind me asking. I pay around, with, with the CBS discount I pay around like 85, 88 bucks. Something like that. Nice. What about you, Justin? I pay 100 bucks a month for my iPhone. Got you. I have like the, 4 gig, I think. 4 or 5 gig plan. Yeah. Around the same. Cool. Yeah, I mean, I don't, I don't know about the M-Bianos in New York. I'm sure there are some. Moving along, Rich in Cleveland, our buddy, wrote in and talks about ISP data caps. Mm-hm. Okay, He says, he claims that it really doesn't take all that much to go through something like a 500 gigabyte data cap. That is so much. It really is, and again, like, all right, let's hear what he has to say. An Average HD Netflix stream is three gigs and hour. Okay, that seems reasonable. So if you watch three hours a day, that's over half your cap right there, correct. No one does that. Three hours of internet TV a day. Three, three hours of HD streaming Netflix a day? Yeah, that's fun. You do that? Watching movies. No but I'm, but do you do that every day? Yeah. Not every day. But it's very possible. But I would say a lot of people do that every day. Yeah. Do you hear of people do that every day? From home. For three hours a day, like you come home at five and you just wanna chill out and [CROSSTALK]. I stand corrected. Even if you do that it's not even half. Okay. Okay. I'm sorry if you do that it is slightly over half. So you need six hours a day everyday. Right, to hit that. To hit that yeah. That might seem like a lot to watch. But it goes on to say if you have a bunch of people in your house. Multiple household yeah. And I get it. He says, I just see data caps and metered internet as a tax put on by ISPs, that are also cable providers, to take away any financial incentive to cutting the cord. Uh-huh. I might accept this arrangement if there was some kind of competitive landscape for ISPs. 100% agree. Allowing people to choose their desired combination of price and service quality. But, what? It's funny that he's, he, I want the same thing. Right. I think we all want the same thing. We all want that. Yeah, that would be great. So, right, but not having that choice is what blows, and that's what a lot of people in the country are faced with. There's no competition. Right. There's just like. So, you know, that's really that's really what we're talking about here. It wouldn't be so bad if said companies like Time Warner and Comcast weren't the worst companies in the world. Like, statistically rated the lowest in customer service. Right. Yeah, yeah. For sure. That would not help it. Yeah, that definitely adds salt to the wound. I mean, you know, I lot of people like writing me on Twitter the last couple days and they're like how could you be for net neutrality. But, but, not for, you know, but also in favor of like bandwidth capping. I'm not in favor of bandwidth capping. I think you should get what you pay for. If you, pay x amount of money. You know, I pay a hundred bucks a month for internet, and they tell me it's unlimited, well then it better be unlimited. And I better be able to blast through like ten terrabyte a month if I like. At the fastest speed you're capable of. Right. From what I'm paying for. If it unlimited and I'm not getting that, and there's a cap on unlimited, well ya then there's a freaking problem. Right. And you know, I looked at my data uses the last couple months and the most I've used in a month was, I did do 620. Mm-hm. 620 gigabytes. That's a lot. That's a lot. But, I'm paying for unlimited. It, I think there will be a day in the future, it's my prediction at least, to, that, that, more companies, like more content providers will eventually put all this stuff in an a la carte sort of way and I mean, that's the dream that we want right now, but we're starting to see at least pieces of it happening. How? Like that, I read this morning on CNET that Amazon, that deal between Amazon and HBO finally went through. It seems [CROSSTALK]. But it's not premium HBO. On Amazon Prime if you have an account. Old HBO. Yeah but I mean that's like baby steps right. That's like I mean plenty. You're not watching like Game of Thrones. Right you're not watching Game of Thrones you could watch Sopranos. Like I can watch that on Netflix. Oh, you could? Oh, yeah. Right, right, right. Yeah. We could watch all that. Are there shows that you catch on Amazon Prime now that aren't available anywhere else, from HBO? Probably, right? Probably. I don't know what the content is. I mean, right, you can always watch the Sopranos other places, in other places, can't you? For free? I'm pretty sure. I don't know if it's on Netflix. I don't know if Sopranos is on Netflix. Yeah Sopranos, I don't think, you're right I don't think it's on Netflix. But there's some place you can watch it right? You can download it, you can stream it somewhere. Maybe not. No? Either way it's coming to the internet. Right but either way there's still like something that's being left out, there's still something that's being held back. Yeah. And that's the new stuff. And 3 years worth of that. Yeah and you're not gonna get it for free, I think that's the thing. Of course you're not gonna get it for free. You're paying some kind of. [CROSSTALK]. But Netflix isn't free. Right? Yeah that's what I'm saying. So like, either you pay a little bit more for Netflix or you subscribe to a whole different account. Either way it'll all even out in the end. That's what I think. I think it'll all equalize in the end. That's it for us guys, have a fantastic weekend. Shoot us an email the404@cnet.com again, no show tomorrow. It's okay. Don't worry, Mark. Just put up a black screen for a second. It's okay, it's okay, Mark. I'm not the greatest switcher. We still love you. Yeah, but you managed to cut to the Contra soundtrack with no problem. [LAUGH] Oh yeah, that's easy, that's easy. It is easy. Go back, listen to Andrew WK, Reggie Watts, Marc Maron, Scott Arkham, and listen to all those shows. That was on purpose. No it wasn't, yeah it was. And do all that stuff and keep supporting the show. Follow us on Twitter, Reddit, Instagram. Really get involved with the Reddit stuff, it's a lot of fun over there. And we're back here on Monday, guys. It's that's simple. Until then, I'm Jeff Bakalar. I'm Justin Yu. I'm Mark Lasaya. Thanks again to Mark Lasaya for rocking the board. We're back here on Monday. Have a great. I'm sorry, Tuesday. No show Tue Monday, it's a holiday. Yeah. Back here Tuesday, ladies and gentlemen. Have a great holiday weekend, we'll see you. You're driving me crazy, Mark, oh. [MUSIC]
