The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is a bold move
[MUSIC]
In case you can't tell by that multifaceted bodywork or if you neglected to read the title of this video.
Today we're taking a look at the 2021 Hyundai Elantra.
The small sedan has been completely redesigned from the platform on up and it offers loads of style And even some groundbreaking tech.
Now unfortunately, I can't tell you what it's like to drive or honestly even show it moving.
But there's still a lot to talk about here.
So let's dive right in.
Now in its seventh generation, the Elantra is built on a new architecture that should make it safer and more efficient.
Like practically every redesigned vehicle, this Hyundai has grown.
It's a little bit longer, wider, and lower than before.
With nearly 114 cubic feet of overall interior volume, it's once again classified as a midsize car.
By that measure, it's also more spacious inside than some small SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 But what you're really going to notice about this Alondra are not its dimensions rather the design.
This is the second model after the Sonata to wear Hyundai's sensuous sportiness styling theme.
And in this case that means lots of lines and geometric shapes.
The grille is almost diamond like.
The rear has more creases than a piece of origami, and the flanks appear to have been attacked by sorrows rapier.
For good measure, it also has a coupe like silhouette, everyone's favourite cliche.
Two flavours of 2021 Elantra sedan will be on the menu, a standard model and for the first time, a hybrid On the former features of 147 horsepower, 2 liter four-cylinder engine match to a CVT.
Nothing earth shattering.
Now, the gasoline electric variant has a 1.6 liter four pot, a 32 kilowatt motor and of course a small lithium ion battery pack.
All of which guilds 139 horses and a 195 pound feet of twist Throw a six speed dual clutch transmission into the mix and you should get better than 50 miles per gallon.
Inside this new Elantra, there is plenty to get excited about.
This driver focused cabin is arguably even more expressively styled than its exterior.
As for materials quality, there is a lot of hard plastic on the handle here and the door uppers unfortunately Though there is some soft stuff on the dashboard as well and nothing looks cheap, nothing feels flimsy, except one thing I did notice the headliner, it's kind of not nice looking but it's still very early days this car doesn't enter production doesn't go on sale for months so much of this could change going forward.
At 38'' this Elantra should offer best in class rear seat legroom more than a Honda Civic Toyota Corolla Mazda 3, or even that new Nissan Sentra.
I fit back there quite well though.
I do wish it had just the From little bit more headroom.
Also something I noticed, thanks to that stylish bodywork.
The rear roof pillars are pretty big and they do kind of lock visibility out the rear of the car something to take note of.
As for tech high end models feature 210 and a quarter inch screens housed under one glass panel just like Mercedes Benz does More affordable variants, have a smaller but still generously sized eight inch display, plus traditional analog gauges.
A first for Hyundai wireless Apple Car play and Android auto, are standard but there's an asterisk.
This works with the base infotainment system.
You can do it either wirelessly or with a cable if you prefer, but the up level system, the one that features navigation, Well that still requires you to plug your phone in.
This is kind of backwards but wireless capability should be offered here as well.
And I'm told possibly in the next model year.
Another thing you can do why Wirelessly in the Elantra is charged your phone.
This system supposedly performs 30% better than before and features integrated cooling to keep your handset from getting hotter than a baked potato.
[SOUND] Can you pass the sour cream and chives?
Thanks.
Now this is pretty cool.
Hyundai has sort of turned the Elantra into sort of a digital personal assistant much like Siri, their dynamic voice recognition system lets you use your voice to control various in vehicle functions.
So basically You hit this button on the steering wheel and that can tell the car, lower the driver side front window, increase the seat heater or even find out how a particular stock did on the market.
Now it doesn't appear to be working in this prototype vehicle, but this is a feature I look forward to testing the future.
Of course no new car is complete without tons of safety tech, and the 2021 Elantra will come with plenty.
Standard Advanced Driver aids include things like automatic high beams, Forward Collision Avoidance and of course Lane Keeping Assist.
Optional kit includes; Blind Spot Monitoring and Adaptive Cruise Control with lane centering.
Another nifty bit of tech is the optional Hyundai digital key, which lets you use your Android phone to unlock and drive the vehicle.
Near Field Communication NFC for short, and Bluetooth Low Energy allow the car to interface with a special mobile app.
Among many other things.
You can share virtual keys with people for a set amount of time and there's an NFC key card as well with similar functionality.
You can keep in your wallet as a backup.
Should you lose the regular key.
Very clever stuff.
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra will be offered in four count them up for different trim levels.
There's Se, Sel, Nline and of course Limited.
Now this thing is going to be assembled in two different factories.
One in Busan, South Korea, another in Montgomery, Alabama, though hybrid models are only gonna be sourced from Asia.
Of course pricing is not available yet that will be announced closer to the cars on sale date.
And you could look for this thing at dealerships in the fourth quarter of the year.
[MUSIC]
Now I don't love the way this Elantra looks but it feels like quality and offers loads of clever features and if this thing drives well which let's be honest, it should and is going to have a real winner on its hands.
