Tesla Factory Tour
Welcome Tesla Fremont.
Every single Model S you've ever seen was built right here.
And now with Model X production in full swing, we thought we'd take you on a little tour behind the scenes of the company's 5.3 million square foot facility.

And its peak the factory produced 500, 000 cars a year.
Tesla's Doing about a tenth of that at this point but they're going to have to scale up in a big way to keep up with demand of the Model 3.
[MUSIC]
After Tesla purchased the factory in 2008 it took four years to get it ready for production.
The first Model X built at the factory was delivered in 2012 and you can still pick up your new Model S4X right here after it rolls off the line.

Tesla uses 200 robots to automate manufacturing in the factory, each one worth about $50,000.
Each one has its own name, most borrowed from X-Men characters including Wolverine, Iceman, Angel And cyclops.

The Fremont factory is home to the largest hydraulic press in the US.
The so called Schuler press is seven storeys tall and it sunk three storeys into the ground just to make it fit inside.
Tesla paid $4 million for the $50 million press and paid another $4 million just to transport it from Michigan to California.

Raw aluminum comes in.
It's stamped and extruded, and spot-welded together with high-tensile steel.
And the result is the raw components to build the chassis for the Model S, and the Model X, which roll off the line together.
Chassis and body are carried along above.
Battery packs are hoisted up from below, and at around 1,200 pounds.
And that's not really a job people can do but they are bolted and placed by hand.
[MUSIC]
Nearly completed cars follow a roller coaster tracks overhead while many robots that deliver parts roll along magnetic tracks lead on the floor.
Before any car leaves the shop it makes a final stop at the inspection area.
Cars make a quick spin across a dino to make sure the motors are up to stuff.
Lurid LED lighting helps to identify any flaws in the bodywork.
Finally, the cars are dried off, cleaned up, and shipped out.
[MUSIC]
Last year, Tesla built 50,000 cars here.
But they plan to build some 500,000 cars here in just two years' time.
That's pretty aggressive, but one thing's for sure.
They've got enough space for it.
