Teenagers beware: Derive keeps distractions at bay for new drivers

I'm here with Dave Thaw, he is the CEO of Derive. We're gonna get a little bit of a demonstration on some anti-distracted driving technology. So we got a Chevy Tahoe, let me just put the key in here. [SOUND] How come it won't start? Emmy, I told you that our technology is trying to address the three part primary causes of teenage related death. And we can see from the app, the first thing you gotta do is put your seatbelt on. Okay, all right, I got it. [SOUND] All right, here we go. There we go, yeah, Chevy Tahoe. And now you can see that your warning's gone. And it says that you are ready to drive. And as soon as you put the car into drive, now your phone is disabled. So other than placing or receiving an emergency call, regardless of what buttons you push, the phone is locked down. So no more Snapchatting You don't know me. I do not Snapchat. [LAUGH] That's to be confirmed. And so what you're going to be seeing during this next little bit is the third piece which is real time speed limiting. Okay. And through this technology, your vehicle can only go the speed limit of the road you're traveling down. How does it know what the speed limit of the road I'm traveling down Based on Geo location of the vehicle. Okay. And mapped out speed limits. Okay. And in the event that there isn't imposed speed limits or it's not known in the vehicle. In this case, the speed limits is 55 per the local area but otherwise it will be base on the road that you were travelling down. Okay, okay, so this is the speed limit of 30 When I got it, Ford 25, what? It like totally starters. My foot is still at 4 and I'm doing 30 miles an hour. Dude, this is so frustrating. [LAUGH] What it's really showing that with smart technology, you can ensure that somebody is a safe driver. In this case, we know you're wearing your seatbelt, we know you're not snapchatting while you're driving, even though I mean You say you don't do that.>> I do not Snapchat.>> And you can only go the speed limit. Now it's 35. If you floor it.>> That is so weird.>> Now you're going to go 35.>> It's so bizarre my foot is to the floor and it's just refusing. All this is due to the simple ODB that plugs into the port right there.>> Allegiadly one out of four Teenage accidents are based on distracted driving. Right. North of half of them are based on speeding. And obviously, we know that if you're in an accident, wearing your seat belt is a really good idea. Right. We certainly think I think this is a great demonstration of ways that technology can be used for overall good, and in this case, protecting teen drivers. I'm so glad you guys weren't in business when I was a teenager. [LAUGH] I am so glad. [MUSIC]
