I'm here at Irwindale Speedway and today, I'm gonna learn how to drift.
That's right.
The folks with Toyota Racing and Formula DRIFT have brought a whole fleet of Toyota 86s and we're gonna get those rear tires all nice and smokey.
Toyota set up a day of drifting lessons in the Toyota 86 for a few select journalists, followed by a direct showdown.
That little rear wheel drive sports car is a perfect learning vehicle, 205 horse power is enough to get that car sideways but not enough to do any bodily harm.
And my teacher for the day, man, am I lucky, it's champion drifter Fredric Aasbo.
So they tell you this day is all about having fun.
No we're gonna work.
This is serious business.
We better win.
This car is a bone stock Toyota G286 which is actually a great tool for drifting cuz it's light, nimble.
It's built like GT cars were built back in the day, they don't have all the alligator trim and the big motor and all that stuff, This is a very efficient light car.
First up is was a simple swallow.
The goal?
Get that manual gear box to second gear, steer around some cones, and try not to hit anything.
Sounds easy right?
Sure, but every car is different.
This is the time to explore the steering and throttle parameteres and figure out just how much space the Toyota 86 occupies.

All right, so I hit a cone.

Imagine there's an egg on the gas pedel.
You don't want to break it.
But you can still give it full speed but you got to be gental and roll in and out of it.
Yea yea.Deslawlo let me practice steady throttle control and smooth stearing imputs.
Drifing my look bad **** and a bit violent from the outside, but inside the car it's all about finesse and a light touch.
Now, it's time to move on to the good stuff and shred some tires.

All right, so.
What we're gonna do here now is first I'm gonna induce some under steer.
You can see what that feels like.
See how the car wants to kinda continue forward, even with me kind of cranking on the full steering.
Right and then even if I go faster in this car it'll actually start oversteering.
But in a lot of cars it'll just continue understeering and then you bring it up to speed, let go and then it'll come out and then you save it, see that?
Yeah.
So I bring up the speed.
Let off and stomp it.
And I kinda let the stirring wheel do its job.
Okay.
You see how I just let go.
To bring it back in.
Yeah.
Okay.
So look at the stirring wheel only time.
So bringing up the speed.
Let of the gas and stomp it and let go.
Then I got a Yes.
And then it comes back and it's like, where are you looking at the driver, because I am dizzy as everything.
Right.
So that is the trick.
That's a good question.
I look where I want to go.
So if you see this curve here.
Yeah.
I just look at the cones as kind of like a circular
As the cones are kind are coming by?
Okay.
Yep.
Yep.
So I look probably two, three cones ahead.
That's where I want to go.
Okay.
Okay so you get to speed, you lift, you hammer down And then you kinda pray.
Yeah, and then I pray.
I guess the idea is to keep your steering inputs as little as possible and your throttle as steady

while remaining on, on the gas.
Exactly.
Okay, I think I can try this now.
All right.
Okay.
So all these sounds is super easy, right?
Just get up to speed, let your foot off the throttle, let go of the steering wheel and then hammer down all the while fighting back the fear that maybe the rear end's gonna come around sending me into a fast moving [UNKNOWN] that may or may not end up in a fiery explosion against the wall.
Sure, it's super easy.

Okay, so I am going to left.

It's scare just letting go.

It's definiately a Jesus take the wheel moment.

Looking Looking at my cones [UNKNOWN].

[LAUGH] It is a big step to actually let go of the steering wheel and let the car drive itself.
Okay.
Cuz that's what you're doing.
So make it a point to let go fully, and then you catch it again.
Okay, so even if I'm trying to keep the drift.

I can't believe that that, like you feel like you feel it being out of control and then you feel it being in control all at the same time.
Like I did'n't know, my god that was amazing.
Amy that was great you let go your fears of stomping the gas, you held it.
Yeah.
You had some corrections, but the second run was killer.
Was really good.
My god.
Let's win this.
To be honest, I drifted a bit before but always pretty much on accident and always in my off or race car where the traction of the desert dirt is much less than the pavement of a Randall speedway.
At the end of the day, I got first looser in the drift contest.
Behind [INAUDIBLE] journalist who'd obviously been practicing but hey, I didn't care.
Second place is cool with me and I learned how to drift and I learned it from the best.
