T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide

[ Music ] ^M00:00:02 >> Hi, I am Bonnie Cha, Senior Editor at CNET.com and today I have got your first look at the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide. This is the newest addition to the T-Mobile's MyTouch Android line and as you can see it has a similar design to the others with a rectangular body and a subtle little chin at the bottom. But unlike the others this handset has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and you can get to it by pushing the screen to the right. The sliding mechanism is a little rough, but overall the phone is very sturdy. The keyboard itself is pretty easy to use. It has a spacious layout and the buttons are raised, so they are easy to press. It takes a little time to figure out where all the symbols are since they share space with the letter keys, but with more use, I was able to type messages pretty quickly on here. And you also get an on-screen keyboard and swipe, so you have got nice set of options. The screen itself measures 3.4-inches diagonally and has an HVGA resolution, so it is not quite as sharp as those found on the Droid Incredible or Evo 4G. Still nice though and you do get pinch-to-zoom support. Overall, really solidly-built phone and pretty compact considering that it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. In terms of features, the MyTouch 3G Slide is running the latest Android 2.1 and HTC has already said that it will be upgradable to Android 2.2, but they haven't said when that release will come out. Even though you are getting all the latest Android features, you are not exactly getting the standard Android experience and that is because T-Mobile has customized the user interface. They have actually built it on top of HTC Sense, so you will see many elements of Sense as you use the phone, such as the Leap screen and the enhancements in the mail app, but if you pull up the main menu of Android app, you will see that it has a more user-friendly look. There are all three key features that T-Mobile added and that is myMode, the Faves Gallery, and Genius Button. MyMode basically lets you change the theme of your device. So, for example if you have the Work theme, your phone displays your e-mail, calendar, and work documents. Then when you are done at the office, you can switch over to Home mode, which shows your pictures, music player, and Web browser. The Faves Gallery is basically an extension of T-Mobile's myFaves. By pressing the set of key to button you pull up 20 of your favorite contacts and you can quickly call them, send them a text message or share a photo or a video. It will also display the latest status message from sites like Facebook, but I found it actually didn't display the most current information. Finally, there's the Genius Button which activates the speech-to-text capabilities of the phone. So, with your voice you can call someone, send an e-mail or text messages, and search the Web or Google maps. Certain modes, it will even read back your text messages to you. Overall, this feature worked pretty well, provided accurate results and it was even able to pick up on my word in noisy environments. The phone had an amazing call quality and I was very impressed with the 3G speeds. Also, even though it has just a 600MHz processor, it was still very fast. MyTouch 3G Slide definitely isn't the flashiest Android device, but it will be a good fit for anyone buying their first smartphone or Android handset. I just hope T-Mobile drops the price because I do think it is slightly overpriced at 179.99 with a two-year contract. I am Bonnie Cha and this has been your first look at the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide.
