T-Mobile G2 vs. Samsung Epic 4G

Desktops
-What's up, Prizefight fans? I'm Brian Tong and this is a beat-'em-up between two powerhouse touchscreen keyboard phones. It's a prizefight punchout between the T-Mobile G2 and the Samsung Epic 4G. Our judges for this fight are senior editor Bonnie "Boom Shaka Laka" Cha, senior associate editor Nicole "Ice Cold" Lee, and Brian "Ring-a-Ling-a-Ding" Tong. We'll take all three judges' blind scores and average them out to the nearest tenth each round. The final Prizefight score will be an average of all rounds using the same decimal system. Let's get this party started. Round one is sexiness. In the slideout keyboard world, these are two of the sexiest phones you'll find. T-Mobile's G2 brings a slimmer and sleeker body with metallic accents and a brushed metal booty. It's even slim and trim when you reveal the keyboard and this phone does a body good. Samsung's Epic 4G brings the sexy with its curved corners and super smooth backside. It's four-inch AMOLED screen is an eye-catcher but it's still a little bulkier and has some chunk. The G2 gets a perfect 5 and the Epic 4G gets a 4. Round two is controls and user interface. The G2 brings the triple threat with a touchscreen, a QWERTY keyboard, and an optical navigation button. Its keyboard is smaller but we prefer the feel of its keys, plus, this is pure Android without any third party skin and we like the experience. The Epic 4G brings one of the roomiest keyboards on a phone with its own row for numbers and a responsive touchscreen to match. TouchWiz is a really cleaner and simplified user interface and its animations are sleek with its 1 GHz processor, but it wasn't enough. The G2 just has too many options and it takes this round 4.7 to 4. So after averaging two rounds, T-Mobile is up big but there's plenty of prizefight left. Round three is features. Both Android phones bring the standard 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and Google's goodies but technophiles like us need more than that. T-Mobile's G2 runs on their HSPA+ network that can rival 4G speeds but it's still not 4G. It doesn't have a mobile hotspot and there's no front-facing camera. Now, the Epic 4G is loaded with, well, you guessed it, 4G, a mobile hotspot, and front-facing camera and I'm a fan of its notifications dropdown to access key services. The Swype input method is on both phones and it's like crack, but the Epic 4G is too strong and it takes this round with a perfect 5 and the G2 gets a 4. Next round is web browsing and multimedia. The G2 brings Froyou and that means Flash support. The WebKit browser is a solid experience but pinch and zoom can lag. Its 5-megapixel camera takes acceptable pics and it gets the job done for multimedia but there's nothing noteworthy. For the Epic 4G, it's all about the screen. Multitouch is smoother on the web browser and its four-inch screen can put you in a trance because it looks that good. You can purchase TV shows and movies through the Samsung Media Hub. Its 5-megapixel camera is packed with shooting modes and pictures were sharper and more colorful. The Epic 4G gets a perfect 5 and the G2 gets a 4, so after averaging four rounds, Samsung has clawed its way back to lead by one-tenth of a point. The final round that decides it all is call quality and performance. The G2 has some excellent call quality that's full sounding with little to no background noise and we were impressed. It brings a slower 800 MHz processor but it didn't hurt the user experience at all. Now, the Epic 4G also has great call quality but it did have a tinnier sound that lacked some depth. It's also one of the snappiest phones we've seen with its 1 GHz processor that doesn't skip a beat. In the final round, the G2 gets a 4.7 and the Epic 4G gets a 4. So let's average out all five rounds, and in a Prizefight where the G2 led early, the Epic 4G came back to lead, before falling in the final round and the T-Mobile G2 takes this battle 4.5 to 4.4, and is your Prizefight winner. These are both great Android keyboard phones and if you're on either T-Mobile or Sprint, you guys just can't go wrong. I'm Brian Tong, thanks for watching, and we'll catch you guys next time on another Prizefight.
