Hi, I'm Molly Wood, and welcome to the Buzz Report the show about the tech news that
everybodys talking about. This week, a special report on something thats got buzz and gives
buzz wine on the Internet.
Young hipster types are drinking more wine. According to the Wine Market Council, wine
consumption among the Millennials was up 46 percent in 2008. Which makes sense, because a
huge chunk of them probably turned 21 in 2008. But still. Theyre starting young. And
consumption among gen-xers was up 23 percent. Overall wine consumption? Up 16 percent.
Beer was DOWN 7 percent and spirits were down 15. Wine. Its a thing.
And if theres a thing out there, and young people are doing it you can bet the Internet is
involved. And it is. From wine social networks -- and there are many to multiple wine-related
online shows to wine iPhone apps, wine online is where its at. Gary Vaynerchuk, of Wine Library
TV, has people buying wine via Twitter, with his Wine Library Daily feed. Oh, and he got a book
deal. A big one. Wine is more accessible, more available, and more hip than ever before.
So, I thought, what better way to dive on in to the world of wine online than to strap on my
boozing shoes and head to a little party called Wine 2.0.
Im here with Smoke Wallin who is the chairman of Wine Two Oh and I really have one
major question, what is Two point Oh about wine?
What is Two point Oh about wine? A trick question. If your point is that humans have
been drinking wine for 5000 years, whats 2.0 about it is that today we have all these
different tools, and ways to connect and learn about wine, on the web, with social
networks, and we have thousands of new wineries that didnt exist 5 years ago. So the
combination of the new technology and the new wineries creat the two oh aspect.
So what do you think is the most promising technology is terms of building wine
awareness, that kind of thing.
I think the social networking right now, the social media that is out there is giving these
small wine producers to do anything, to connect with anyone anywhere. The scale of that
type of marketing is better than anything they could pay for.
So Im a guest host of cnet, smoke Wallin of wine 2.0
Im going to hook up o the camera woman.
I have the best bloody Mary mixes in the world, everyone agrees.
But this is a wine tasting.
So Molly, when did you decide to hand over your show to me?
Probably after the 5th glass of wine.
Oh, yeah. I think I still have a headache from that party. I LOVE wine on the Internet.
And thats the Buzz Report for this week, everyone. Im Molly Wood, and thanks for watching.
