Sony Vaio EB1JFX/B
[ Background music ] >> Scott Stein: Hi I'm Scott Stein Senior Associate Editor at CNET.com and this is the Sony Vaio EB1JFXB. Sony's got a lot of multimedia laptops and a lot of Vaios across their line ranging from the ultra ultra portable up to tremendous screen high end machines. The Vaio E is meant as a budget under $1000 laptop meant for people who want to have a little bit of multimedia and still have a pretty speedy processor. For 799 the Sony Vaio EB1JFXB has a 500 gig hard drive, 4 gigs of RAM and an Intel Core I3 processor which is a nice set up and in addition to a 15.5 inch screen which is very bright, really great for watching movies and speakers which were pretty loud. To us they're not fantastic speakers but they're easily as loud as any TV, speakers and are great for watching movies or for sharing videos which isn't always the case with main stream laptops. Now if you haven't used any of the new Intel Core I series of processors the Core I3 is a lower speed, lower power processor than the Core I5 series but it's still faster and better than a lot of Core 2 duo processors that are out there. So I think you'll be surprised as we were when using it how zippy and speedy it is and playing videos, multitasking especially and we found it really great and fun to use. The keyboard certainly bears some note. It's a great keyboard and it also has a built in number pad, it stretches edge to edge. It may be one of our favorite raised keyboards that's ever been made. The one problem of course is that when you build an edge to edge keyboard your hands are gonna go off to the side here and our left palm began to drag off the edge so for typing it may be a bit of a problem, although we do like that Sony's including number pads and using the space better on the edges of their laptops. In addition there are 4 USB ports which is nice, one of which happens to be a combo e sata port, there's a DVD CD drive and other options online to upgrade the Vaio E series up to Blu-Ray and up to the Core I5 series as well and even add discrete graphics. While this has just an Intel media accelerator built in, we found it great for movies and for video in general but you're not gonna be able to play mainstream games on it per say. Overall, for 799 it's a pretty decent value. The one problem is that it's a bit of a boxy unit. It's certainly not light and it's not that thin. It comes in a variety of colors ranging all the way to the crazy neon iridescent blue and hibiscus pink, this model is a prototype so this dull silver is not one of the options thankfully because we prefer it in a little bit of a brighter, crazier color or at least I would so again you may not find these to be the most portable of laptops but it certainly can do the job well and it's a really nice affordable Vaio.[ Background music ] >> I'm Scott Stein and this is the Vaio EB1JFXB.
