Sony COO Phil Molyneux showcases Sony's new innovations at CES 2013
Tech Industry
-All right hey guys, welcome back to the CNET stage here at CES 2013.
I'm Brian Tong and joining me today are my lovely colleagues Bridget Carey senior editor over at CNET New York, and our special guest, Phil Molyneux Sony COO.
Now we saw you yesterday doing this big keynote in Sony's Big Great Booth and you know,
I was hoping you were going to carry in one of your 4K TVs on your back, not possible.
-I couldn't try.
They got about 5 yards, and it weighed me down a bit.
-That 84 incher is a big guy right?
-That 84 inch is a real big guy.
It's some TV, it really is.
-Absolutely.
Now, you guys also showed off the Xperia Z or the Xperia Zed depending on who you talk to.
-I have to say Zed.
-You have to say Zed, right?
-Yup.
-And I brought it for you.
-You bought it or you brought it, because --
-I brought it to show you,
but here it is.
I mean we are really thrilled about this product.
So it has got such a beautiful design.
It's water resistant.
-Yeah, that was really cool right?
-Yeah right.
-That's one of those cool things that a lot of people may not have expected out of a phone, dipping in the water.
-That's right.
So we were talking about you could do blogging while you are in the bathtub.
-Is that what you do?
-Yeah.
-Was that feature made specifically for you.
-I will not tell my secrets here or if you're running in the road, you can still, you know, do a bit of work.
So, that's a cool feature,
but the beauty here is we've used a lot of our knowledge and our experience.
-We hope the people can see it at home.
-Particularly on the screen side, this is 50 years of Sony's knowledge and experience that we put into the screen here.
We used the best of our own technology for the camera, so this is the world's first HDR video capable smartphone.
So, I think we are really saying here that, this is a super phone I think, yeah and it's gonna take on anyone.
-Can I see it for a sec?
-Yeah, yeah!
-Now, this is amazing to me that it's water resistant, but most water resistant phones had this giant rubber plugs on every outlet.
-Not this one.
It's beautiful.
-Yeah, it's usually, yeah, water resistant doesn't mean beauty.
So that's kinda interesting.
That's cool.
-Now another thing Phil, is you guys, you know, we know that NFC cable devices are out there, but sometimes the barrier to using them is that the transaction of tapping something isn't that seamless and that was kind of a focus of some of your mobile devices.
You brought some other, you know, some other things here.
You're kind of infamous for your statement at the keynote about carrying pink balls wherever you go right?
-Yeah, I carry my pink ball wherever I go.
Actually this is brand new audio ball.
We're releasing this in the spring and what you have here, I gave the story that if I'm in a hotel, I'm working away I want some background music, I run it on my Xperia.
I can do this.
I move it from my Xperia to the audio ball and then listen in the background, and if I got a phone call
coming, the music stops.
I press the button here and then I'm into an audio conference, a conference call.
Once I finish, the phone cuts so I'm back to my music here.
So it works really well and we have a whole line of Sony one touch reCaller.
You can do this to transfer your music, across multiple devices that we are showing on the show this year.
So very cool.
I'm really excited about that.
-Now also --
-People will love it.
-Yeah, sorry about that.
Your headphone is over here.
-Yeah they are.
-The X series is that correct?
-This is the next generation X where first generation, we had a collaboration with Simon Cowell.
We help design, not only the product, but the audio output because he used most music.
-He's a picky guy as you know, right?
-He's a great guy.
-Is he hard to work with Phil?
-No, no, no.
He is really simple.
He was collaborative.
He was in there hands on, and we came up with a great, great product.
So this is next generation.
-It looks comfy.
-They're really comfortable.
This is memory foam here.
So, it fits on your
ears.
You can wear it all day and its not gonna hurt your ears and they are very light.
This is all aluminium, so very well made and the sound output is sound only Sony can do.
-Yeah well, I know.
I took to listen and I do have right now, I'll be honest, I have Bose noise cancelling because I use them on the plane and everything, but these guys did sound really good.
I mean, Adele sounds beautiful on it.
-Does it sound better than the Bose?
-Well, I would say, you know, I only use my Bose on the plane, but they sound fuller.
If I'm talking about sound quality without noise
cancellation--
-Yeah.
-They sound a lot more fuller.
Like absolutely, I'm not even lying right and also they do match my outfit.
I'm just telling you all at home.
-Goes so well with your tie.
-Come on.
-I mean look at that tie.
-Did you plan this Phil?
Did you get some insider?
I mean, look at this, we're you in my closet?
-We have kind of variations, 7 pairs, so I sent someone over here just to check your tie out and said bring the red.
-Smart man, smart man.
I like that.
Now, also a big trend here, Sony is pushing a lot 4K TV right.
4K televisions.
We know you guys have the 84 incher
that retails around 25K.
You announced the 65 and the 55.
There, you know, obviously you've heard both sides of the argument.
You guys were there first.
You're pushing the content, but there's a lot of consumers at home that are like, you know, I may like the 4K, I don't need the 4K, but still the price is the barrier to entry for me, you know.
What do you have to say about that?
-Well, I think, you know, really you have to see the TVs themselves.
The Sony 4K TVs are just remarkable and probably you are a little bit young to remember
Single Definitions to High Definition transfer.
-Oh come on.
You know what, wait, wait Phil, I have Asian genetics all right.
I am like 65 years old.
-I am gonna set up a demo for you.
Anyway, if anyone can remember that transition from SD to HD.
When you saw an HD picture, you say, that's the one I want.
I gotta have that.
That stuff's old.
When you see 4K against HD, you look at the 4K and you say, that's it.
I've seen the future.
I want it now and we are bringing it to you now.
-All right.
-So it's there and we are thrilled with it, and if you want to go and see it firsthand, you can either see it on our booth or go to one of our Sony stores and go and see it live.
It's remarkable and the audio quality that we put in there, we are using something called liquid fluid speakers.
First time ever, but they are really liquid based speakers so the sound quality and depth of sound is amazing.
-All right.
-I'm gonna buy about 20 for my house.
-20 for your house?
-Well, my wife will kill me.
-I mean you can just get one for me right, just one.
-I'll have that on every room, every wall, yeah.
-All right, that's great.
Well, thanks so much for coming out here Phil.
We really appreciate it all right.
-My pleasure.
