Snagit for Mac
-Most Mac users know you can take a screen shot by using keyboard commands.
What if you want something more from your screen capture utility?
I'm Jason Parker from download.com and this is a first look at a better screen capture tool called Snagit for Mac.
Already extremely popular on the Windows platform, the Mac version of Snagit offers a slightly slimmed down feature set, but still has most of the main options you need for great screen captures.
The two-part interface includes, first, a small drawer-like window that sticks to the side of screen.
Whether you're on a webpage or working on a program, you can simply mouse over the tab to bring up some quick controls.
You'll be able to take a regular screen shot or you can choose all-in-one to get on-screen options for other types of captures.
Hit the arrow at the bottom of the screen to take a shot of an entire webpage, for example.
Once you've taken your screen shot, your image will open up in the Snagit Editor.
This second element of the interface is where most of the action happens, with a viewing area on the left, tools on the right, and a place to browse past screen captures on the bottom.
To add callouts to your screen shot, use the Tools tab and select an arrow to point out a screen element.
Or, you can add a speech balloon and type in pertinent information and add a tail to point to a screen element.
From there, you can add tiny graphics called "stamps" to liven up the capture.
Or, you can add shapes, pen lines, highlighters, or even blur effects to block out other elements.
To add a special flair to your capture, click on the Effects tab.
Now, you'll be able to add stylized edges, borders, and shadows to your image, or even use the Perspective or Reflection options for a more 3D effect.
Snagit for Mac has a number of great options for calling out specific parts of images, but it's still a bit behind the Windows version.
You won't get screen-cast videos, for example, and you can't setup tags for images for easy searching in the Mac version.
But TechSmith says more features are coming soon.
So, stay tuned for future updates.
Overall, Snagit for Mac is a great tool for taking quick screen grabs and offers plenty of options for adding a long list of specialized graphics and effects.
We'll be happier when it catches up to the Windows version, but we're still excited to finally get Snagit on the Mac.
I'm Jason Parker and this has been a first look at Snagit for Mac.
Thanks for watching.
