Slingbox unveils Roku app, updates app for iPadSlingbox made it possible to watch a game live even while away from cable TV. Now it's updating the tech for Roku, iPad, and Windows. A better alternative to Apple TV or Chromecast? CNET's Sumi Das talks to Slingbox exec Michael Hawkey.
One of the cool announcements that we're coming out with for just in time for the holiday season is an upgraded and latest featured SlingPlayer 3.0. This is an iPad application that works and not only the viewing of your live or recorded content. It gives you better metadata, better sorting, better searching. It gives you recommendation engines and it also ties in social media directly from inside of it. You can see what your friends were watching. You can figure out what you're watching and tell them about that. You can tweet from inside the application. It also gives you sports tickers and sports information, what's trending, what's hot. We support air play. We support Roku. You've always have the ability on Windows devices to use browsers to play Sling but will and take advantage of Windows 8 and some of its cool features and in touch ability. Live TV isn't just about live sports or live news. Live TV has become a social time. Primetime is social time. People are watching shows and they wanna talk about it. They wanna tweet about it. They wanna put something on our Facebook. It's making the linear TV experience once again needed. So when you're down the street and you're bragging about your kid's football game, you can pull out your smartphone and actually show your neighbor your son's great playing in that football game. A lot of users do have multiple ways to get over the top video, NetFlix, YouTube, Hulu. Sling is in a [unk], Sling is in addition to that. Sling is giving you all of that which you have and putting it in to a Sling box application for all of your channels to be complete with a Sling box, the great internet we have today and the tablet explosion is really gotta people to the point where they want their living room TV, they want on the device in their hand and Sling lets them do that.
