Speaker 1: Apple and Google were once the best of friends. Here's Google CEO, Eric Schmidt being warmly welcomed by apple CEO, Steve jobs at the introduction of the very first iPhone isolation. Speaker 2: Steve, what an incredible Speaker 1: Job. So how did the two companies go from that to apple? Pretty much hating Google. That's what we're here to talk about you. Speaker 1: This is the rundown jump around to different sections if you want. And this, [00:00:30] this is AEZ. The original apple iPhone was introduced in January, 2007. You were looking at a touchscreen phone, unlike anything out in the market. At the time of the few apps that were available at launch, two of them were from Google, Google maps and YouTube. Remember there's no app story. Yet. Google also was the default search engine in safari. Now, before launch Google had been secretly working with apple to get search maps and YouTube ready. According to the book, dog fight apple particularly [00:01:00] wanted a Google maps per an engineer said that they thought that Steve jobs personally liked maps a lot and wanted to make sure it was integrated into the iPhone. Wait a second. Why was Google secretly working with apple that's because Google was developing something called Android at the time while Andy Ruben was heading up Google's mobile operating system, there was this other project headed up by Vic Gundotra setting up Google's apps for iPhone. Speaker 1: Google was also working on a new Google mobile search, which [00:01:30] would roll out first on the iPhone. Google absolutely loved the iPhone. The iPhone was the first mobile device, powerful enough to handle Google's apps and it did something other phones didn't. It had a browser that worked with Google search ads. At the time search ads were garbage on mobile devices before the iPhone. And if you didn't know, Google makes a lot of money on advertisements. You know, what's fun. Steve jobs knew about Android and was good with [00:02:00] it. Sort of you see, there were versions of Android being developed at the same time. One was codenamed sooner. The other was codenamed dream. Sooner design has been available publicly phones running. The sooner version of Android would have a keyboard taking up half of the device with a screen on the top. It looked a lot like a Blackberry. Speaker 1: Steve jobs apparently believed that Google's phone future exist using this sooner version of Android jobs, thought of it as a windows mobile competitor, not a competitor [00:02:30] for the iPhone, apple and Google also had some shared DNA by having a lot of overlap on their boards of directors. Al gore was a board member at apple and a virtual board member at Google. Arthur Levinson was on both boards. Google's corporate coach. Bill Campbell was on apples board, Google CEO, Eric Schmidt was on apples board. Here's Eric Schmidt at the iPhone announcement, joking about how close the companies were. I I've had the privilege of joining, Speaker 2: Joining the board, and there's a lot of relationships between the boards. And [00:03:00] I thought, uh, you know, if we just sort of merged the companies, we could call them apple goo. Um, but I'm not a Speaker 1: Marketing guy. It didn't take long for things to sour between Google and apple in the summer of 2008, Steve jobs visited Google. According to the book, Steve jobs by Walter Isaacson jobs had got, gotten into a shouting match with Paige Bryn and Andy Rubin jobs was upset because he thought Google had played a game of bait and switch by showing jobs. The sooner version of Android jobs also [00:03:30] threatened to Sue Google. If it kept developing Android and used any iPhone features like multi-touch Google kept certain gestures away from early Android phones. The first Android phone was introduced on September 23rd, 2008 in New York city. I was actually there for it. The phone was called the T-Mobile G one, but it was also known as the HTC dream. Eric Schmidt would've accused himself on apple board discussions about the iPhone Schmidt also kept his distance from Android. Steve jobs was [00:04:00] also apparently upset about Google's new Chrome browser. Speaker 1: It was competition for safari and the open source web kit apple developed for that browser. Also, Google tried to hire some safari devs for the Chrome team in 2009, Eric Schmitz left Apple's board saying the departure was due to competition between apple and Google over phones. Arthur Levinson left Google's board in the same year. Levinson is currently the chairman of Apple's board of directors in 2010, apple held a town [00:04:30] hall, Steve jobs let everyone know his opinion of Google's. Don't be evil motto, quote it's bull. He also said that Google wants to kill the iPhone. So you can see at this point, apple is not pleased with Google. Oh, and apple sued HTC in March, 2010. The dispute was over an HTC Android phone with multi-touch features. Apple said ATC infringed on 20 apple patents related to the iPhones, user interface, underlying architecture [00:05:00] and hot hardware. Speaker 1: Many saw this as apple suing Google using HTC as a proxy of the lawsuit. Steve jobs said, quote, our lawsuit is saying, Google, you ripped off the iPhone. Wholesale ripped us off grant theft. I'm going to destroy Android because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go Thermo nuclear war on this and quote jobs in Schmidt had a meeting after this jobs told Schmidt, quote, I'm not interested in settling. I don't want your money. I want you to stop using our [00:05:30] ideas in Android. That's all I want. End the HTC apple lawsuit would eventually be settled in November of 2012. Speaking of 2012 that's the year apple gave Google maps. The boot from iOS apple maps became the default maps app for iPhone. If you lived through this, you know that the original apple maps was kind of a mess when directly compared to Google maps, apple maps was kind of a joke. Speaker 1: It was so bad. Apple issued a public [00:06:00] apology and suggested users download other maps apps from Bing map quest or ways apple even mentioned using Google maps by creating a home screen shortcut to Google's web app. This was probably one of the more outwardly aggressive moves done apple to show its disdain of Google. So how does Google stay on the iPhone for such a long time? Partly due to money in 2014 court transcripts revealed that Google paid apple $1 billion [00:06:30] to keep its search bar on iPhone. The agreement also gives apple a percentage of revenue. Google generates through the iPhone. That percentage was 34% experts say the pay increased in the year since 2014. According to Bernstein analyst am SA Nagi Jr. Google paid an estimated $3 billion in the fiscal year of 2017. The analyst said that since Google's payments are nearly all profits for apple, Google alone made [00:07:00] account for 5% of Apple's total operating profits for that year. Now, lately Apple's been taking shots at Google by pushing privacy, big time in iOS and in advertisements like this one, no Speaker 3: Find your own best test. Speaker 1: Why don't you find your while this has been going on Google, Google's been making lots and lots of apps for iOS and iPad OS. So apple may not be thrilled with Google, but apple is still making sure its customers have access to Google stuff. Will we ever see a return [00:07:30] to apple goo? Maybe. I mean, apple used to say some really awful stuff about Microsoft and Adobe. Now they all seem much more mellow. I wanna ask you something. Do you think Android is a rip off of iOS or maybe you think that all user interfaces borrow from each other? I'm curious. Remember to subscribe and hit the notification bell.
