Broadcom and Qualcomm merging? Not if Donald Trump has anything to say about it. The U.S. President issued an executive order blocking the oppositions stating quote, There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that Broadcom might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States, unquote. We don't know the details surrounding the national security aspect of that statement. But the order did arise after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US recently worried the purchase would set back 5G infrastructure development. Critics of the rumored deal also suggested that a merger would have pushed Broadcom/Qualcomm dangerously close to monopoly territory in areas like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip sets. There wasn't unofficial announcement made regarding the purchased but as of now both companies have agreed to respect the executive order. BROADCOM did try to win over skeptics by insisting it plan to make the US a global leader in 5G innovation with the acquisition That looks like the argument didn't exactly sway nice airs. 5G is a critical part of future connectivity in smart cities around the globe. And since it aims to utilize a global standard unlike older wireless networks like 3G, a lot of companies are keen to exert influence as the details are worked out.
