See the medieval city where the future's computing brains are built

[MUSIC] When you fall in love with your MacBook Air or Galaxy S7 phone, you know companies like Intel and Samsung deserve a lot of the credit for building the electronic brains in those devices. But to develop future chip technology, those chip makers rely on an organization here in Leuven, Belgium called IMEC that you've probably never heard of. [MUSIC] Here, more than 2300 researchers to figure out what will work and what won't work in next generation chips. They've just opened a vast new facility called the Queen Room where they'll figure out how to build the chips that will power the PC you buy in 2020. For the phone, you'll buy in 2024. But there's a lot more going on at iMac, we're talking about auto-focusing contact lenses. Solar panels that generate more power, costs less, and can be built into your windows, and a chip that can scan more than 4,000 blood cells a second, screening for cancer.
