Operating Systems
[MUSIC] One of the big new features in Android to me is something called App Actions. Now, this is built into the OS and is essentially gonna predict the actions that you might wanna take in certain apps at certain times of day or depending on On different contextual signals like if you plug in a set of headphones. So there are a couple of different ways in that actions are surfaced. The first one is essentially in your app drawer. So in this example it's gonna give me some directions to navigate to work. And it also might decide that I wanna listen to some music on my commute as well. So then it's just a simple, single press and it takes you straight into that action, like so. Another way that actions can be useful is when you're doing a search. Say for example, I want to look for something on machine learning. It will then bring up some suggestions, such as I'm looking for a book on machine learning, or it will give me links to some courses And decide exactly what I wanna look for there. Another option is say for example I wanna get a Lyft or a car ride. So, it's gonna then pull information from the app itself and just bring it all up here in the search results rather than me actually having to go into the app to say I wanna book a car to go home or to work And then once I tap into here it'll bring up the app and you can basically start navigation and start the action like you would if you were in the app itself another way actions comes in handy is in a app like Gmail say for example you were making dinner plans you can simply highlight some of the text and then the action would know if it said a restaurant or a music artist and then open a app like open table to make a reservation Or Spotify to play the song. Android P also has a new way to navigate your phone. So what we need to do is swipe on this button and you get to the app switcher. You can flick across like so, swipe up again once more and then you go into the Tie an app drawer like this. Now the other interesting thing about Android P is Smart Replies. This is something the app developers have to build into their apps So not every single app's gonna have this right now. But you can see a little demo here. Say it will have a bunch of text messages coming in. And then Smart Replies will predict What you should reply with next, kind of like that order apply feature in gmail that predicts what you want to send. So I can just tap a response and it'll send it there. Meanwhile images are also a part of Android P within the notifications thread too, and another cool thing that I wanted to show you is when you are up in the app switcher here, You can actually text and hold and then get the option to copy text from any of the apps within that switcher, and then paste into another app. You can also press and hold the power button and you'll now get an option to take a screenshot too and then you can edit it. And there's also a new do not disturb mode. This essentially blocks all notifications from From coming through. So you just activate it, and they all disappear. And then you deactivate it, and everything pops up in a shade like it normally would. [MUSIC]
