Rimac Nevera: An electric hypercar that sets the bar

Electric Vehicles
Speaker 1: This is the Neveda formally known as the C two. And it's probably one of the most exciting cars of this decade, partly because of the technology packed inside it partly because of the ethos behind it. And partly because of the company that built it. Speaking of we've all been pronouncing it's parent company a little bit wrong. It's not Rimac it's Maxs. It's a Croatian name. Real cool. Then let's continue. It's a hypercar. So it would be somewhat rude not to start with the big numbers. [00:00:30] The fully electric Nevara comes with a 1,914 horsepower, 1,696 pound foot electric motor RI at says that the full production car will from zero to 62 in under two seconds, not to 100 in a shade over four, not to 186 in 11.6 seconds. And up to 258 miles an hour, which is fast as it stands. The car is 90 to 95% finished. Speaker 1: So not to 62 in this car takes a little over two [00:01:00] seconds and it's limited a glacial 186 miles an hour. So subject to tire testing says the Nevara Bo a 340 mile range, and that it can get from 20 to 80% of a full charge in just 18 minutes. If you think about it, 80% of 340 ish, miles is 270 miles give right now, you'd be lucky to get that. If you had say a normal internal combustion engine, super car that you'd driven, spiritedly [00:01:30] with some vigor and then 18 minutes. Now, if you had a completely empty tank to refill, then you went into the petrol station and had a browser overpriced M and Ms. Then joined the queue, then paid, then got back, came to the car. That's roughly 18 minutes. Isn't it. And it's that as well as the fearsome speed that makes it a realistic proposition. Speaker 1: Realistic. However, is a relative term. Seema will only build 150 of these and they'll cost two millionish euros. So it's [00:02:00] unlikely. You'll see one wearing down the high street, unless you in Monaco. And in order to get it to do its fast charging dance, you need an ultra fast 350 kilowat charger, which might be a little tricky, at least for the moment while it's packing a 120 kilowat tower battery capable of producing huge power and huge ranges has gone to town ensuring the rest of the car works with the power train to up that range. Then event era weighs 2,150 kilos, not a featherweight, but as far as EV [00:02:30] hypercar go, not too shabby. Now parts of that is down to its carbon fiber. Monocoque it's basically the roof, the floor, the front, the back, the structural battery pack. All part of the single carbon fiber that's made in house at that weighs just 200 kilos. Speaker 1: It's the single largest carbon fiber structure in the automotive industry. Aerodynamics are important here as well to keep drag down. There's a flat floor and a [00:03:00] vent effect, rear Val, as well as active flaps to change where the air moves for cooling the shape of the bonnet pillars and diffuses keep drag low and cooling optimized as well. What I think is the coolest thing on this is the rear wing. It looks as though it's nestled neatly into the back of the car, but it isn't, it's active because it, of course it is. It's a hypercar. Now Rimma says it will react within a moment's notice depending on what you want the car to do. So for example, in track load, it'll give you the most down force imaginable. If you want to try and reach the [00:03:30] car's 258 mile an hour top speed, it will sink itself into the back, giving the car a 0.28 drag coefficient. Speaker 1: And when you want to stop doing 258 miles an hour, it will also become an air break. Stopping is taken care of with a set of 390 millimeter, carbon ceramic six piston Brembos on a break by wire system, as well as regenerative braking. So you can recoup a little bit of juice while you're hooning. There are some mind blowing driver assistance technologies on this. So it's got all we talk [00:04:00] vectoring, essentially the wheels read what's happening under the car, and then shuffle talk to where it needs to go. It can also transform the car. So if you want it to be a little bit more surefooted with a little bit less than the full whack of power, you can have that, or you can turn it into a big drift monster. If you want to. That said it is, are quite easy to find the limit to physics and kind of break them in this cuz there is a lot of power and not everybody's that confident say on track, this has your back. Speaker 1: It's [00:04:30] got AI driver coach. So when you're going around at the moment, certain limited tracks, there's an overlay on the entertainment screen. That'll show you the best line. The car will guide you round it to knock seconds off your time. It uses the car's radar, LIDAR, ultrasonic saunas, and its own Invidia electronic brain. And it'll see you around. And if the car doesn't have the track built in, let's say said that you just need to drive around a couple of times [00:05:00] and the car will fit out. What's best. That's mindblowingly clever. It feels as though I'm sat in a carbon fiber rocket SL albeit a silent one. And that's before I find myself at a runway with a full charge and permission to launch, okay, nail the break, nail the gas, ready for launch three C one go well, how this is unreal. Absolutely unreal. I can't believe it's 260 [00:05:30] KTH. That's a quarter mile in less than nine seconds. And it just blows your mind. I'm having difficulty breathing. That was fast. So I've been lucky enough to drive some, some pretty fast stuff that can all suck it. That feels instantly archaic. I'm genuinely blown away. Steve took my breath away. I was [00:06:00] struggling for breath cuz it was so intense. I've never ever experienced anything like this in, in my life. That's UN [inaudible] real good. God. I want to do that all day. And we're on a track as well. I was violated by fear. I'm okay with that. Yeah, Speaker 1: It's unreal. It's absolutely unreal with the bits. Some surely turn into a gift outta the way. Here's what it's like on the [00:06:30] road. The cabin itself, there's loads of Ru it does feel quite wide as a result, but you've got all the big numbers there. Show off to your passenger. I guess there's even a, uh, a set of cup holders that have been speed rated. The remit says this is more of a GT. Hence the emphasis on comfort. And it is quite comfy at the moment. We're in a, a pre-prod card. So it is a neat bit Noisey. There's a few noises creeping in that maybe shouldn't be, but you do get really nice and electric swell, which a lot of people are going to be [00:07:00] like, oh it doesn't sound like a V8. No it doesn't. But as hopefully I proved on the runway, it doesn't behave like a V8 either on the looks front, it is a very pretty thing, but it's not very jaw dropping. Speaker 1: It's not gonna stop the world. No matter Ette said that is deliberate. He wanted to build something timeless. It's didn't want to build something offensive that will go out as style. And he's managed that there are, as you'd expect lots of different modes to choose from. You can have sport crews, track, drift [00:07:30] range for when you really want to go long distance custom one and custom two. Now custom one and custom two. You can change pretty much anything you want about the car. You can shift the power balance to coming out the front or you can change how heavy the steering is, how the brake is. There are options to play with either way though. No matter what mode you're in. If you give it a little squarer there goes, wow, it's that instant talk. You just have it straight off the bat. And yeah, we talk about that with EVs all the time. [00:08:00] Oh, it's got instant talk and isn't it impressive. But with this, because there is so much of it, you do have to actually change your driving style quite drastically to make sure you don't end up firing yourself into someone else's horizon. Don't give it the full beans. When you want to overtake someone, give it half that's all the beans you need eat half beans, half beans, half beans is still quite a lot of beans. Speaker 1: Now this has some pretty funky drive by wire tech on it. So the steering is steer by wire. [00:08:30] Feedback's fairly good. They say they've got a little bit of a way to go, but in sport mode is decently weighted. Like you do get a good impression of what's going on up front and the reaction is instant. It, you know, it's a weight saving thing. It's a packaging thing as well. Nothing in this car is wasted space. The brakes are the most fascinating cuz there's no real physical connection between the pedal and the massive Brembo disc. There is one in case of emergency, but really it's done by wire. They have a break feel. Simulator. What wants to do [00:09:00] is it wants to make the car feel like it's breaking. Normally whether it's using break region or not says that it's not a hundred percent happy with, with how it feels. Speaker 1: And there is a little bit of a dead spot as it stands, but this car is amazingly how heavy that Avera is so heavy. You do feel the way you feel the car pitched forward just a little bit. That's no bad thing. It's something that can't be overcome. This has an enormous battery that's been designed to give this car enormous power, [00:09:30] but it feels like a proper super car. And it's gonna be something that needs to change a few mindsets as well, because it has one gear and you have to charge it and this and that, but it's gonna win every single game of top drums. It's faster than a McLaren F1. It's quicker to 62 than Ave on. It's more expensive than everything else. The only thing you do miss is some of that hour roll. You know, the treat comes along with it. Speaker 1: The cues that come with say a V8. So you don't [00:10:00] really know that you are doing a silly speed. You don't really know that you are perhaps going rather briskly, but at the same time, it doesn't spur you on to drive like a moron. You just go with the flow. So it's actually quite relaxing to do it in enormous amount of speed. It can't offer some of the rawness, but the internal combustion engine, if you want performance pound for pound, you can't have that elsewhere. This is a staggering [00:10:30] technical achievement. The game has changed. The Neve's numbers may seem intimidating and it's price two, but you actually have to stop and think about what this really, really is. This is a working proof of concept. Romance will tell you. Yeah, we'll develop you an awesome EV here's the one we made. This is a 200 mile an hour. Speaker 1: Shop front. There are a bundle of electric, hyper cars come Lotus Tesla pin in for arena. Plenty [00:11:00] more. And they're all in the wings ready to go. They provide the wealthy with a new quiet way to get around and provide a marvelous show piece. What lots of people will ask is can an EV hypercar provide anywhere close to the thrill of a traditional car? Can others crack it? And Hass managed it. MA's first car, the cons that one blew people's minds, but it was a limited vehicle. There weren't that. Many of them, the concept to this, the Nevara, this is a real car that real people can buy. And it is [00:11:30] mind blowing the achievement that this is, it handles beautifully. The power delivery is obviously mad. It literally took my breath away. Anyone from here on out who says EV's, aren't exciting, is wrong. I will argue with you and I will win. This is an experience. This is an experience up there with the best I've ever had in a car stunning.
