>> VLC video player is an excellent free video player that plays almost any file format. But when you go full screen, there are no on screen controls. I'm Tom Merritt from CNET.com with a quick tip for controlling playback in VLC's full screen mode via hot keys. First, let's get into that troublesome full screen mode. I've got a tiny postage stamp size video playing here. I can either press the F key or just double click on the video and viola, I've got full screen. But like I said, no controls on the screen. So let's run through a few key commands for you. Press the space bar to pause the movie and start it playing again. Now a few fast forward and rewind commands. Press shift and the right arrow to skip forward 3 seconds. Shift and the left arrow takes you back 3 seconds. Alt plus the right arrow skips forward 10 seconds. Alt and the left arrow skips backwards 10 seconds. And for bigger jumps, control plus the right arrow skips forward a minute. You guessed it, control plus the left arrow skips backwards one minute. Press the minus sign key for slow motion and press the plus sign key to speed things up. Now you can learn a bunch more hot keys where those came from and even reprogram which keys do what in the settings menu. With the playback paused, press control S. Go to the interface section, select hot key settings. Now you can enjoy full screen VLC playback and stay in control. That's it for this quick tip. I'm Tom Merritt for CNET.com.
