Panasonic DMP-BD60
>> Mathew: Hi I'm Mathew Maskoviac [assumed spelling], Senior Associate Editor at CNET.com and we're here with the Panasonic DMP-BD60;
this is an entry level Blu-Ray player from Panasonic and it's the successor to the DMP-BD35 which was the first stand-alone Blu-Ray
player to win the Editor's Choice award. As you can see the design is pretty slim it's not as thick as the earlier Blu-Ray players.
The disk tray's in the middle of the unit and if you flip down the panel you'll see there's an SD card slot, a USB port and some
front panel controls. Now the big addition on the BD60 is Viera Cast which is Panasonic's proprietary online content portal. Now
on Viera Cast you'll be able to check the weather, look at YouTube videos, browse your Picasso photos. Now, it doesn't offer Netflix
streaming like many of the competing Blu-Ray players so if you're a Netflix subscriber you may want to look at some of the competitors.
On the other hand Amazon Video Demand is coming to the Viera Cast in May if you'd rather a pay per rental type content service. Now
the DMP-BD60 has all of the standard features we've come to expect on Blu-Ray, it's profile 2.0 compatible so it'll work with BD Live
features and also has onboard decoding for Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio is central so if you have an older HDMI receiver you'll
still be able to get all the high resolution out of those soundtracks. There's an HDMI output, there's component video if you have
an older HD TV, you'll also see there's an Ethernet port which is used for the online content but there is no WiFi option like you're
seeing on some of Samsung's and LG's new Blu-Ray players. In terms of performance the BD60 is excellent on Blu-Ray movies and it
also does a good job of up-scaling your standard DVD's. One thing we did notice is that the BD60 doesn't have as fast of load times
and operational speed that we did see on some of the newer Samsung players. All together we thought the DMP-BD60 was a solid Blu-Ray
player and it offers reliable playback but if you're looking for Next Gen features like WiFi, Netflix or Onboard Memory you're gonna
have to look for another player. I'm Mathew Maskoviac at CNET.com and this is the Panasonic DMP-BD60.
