The Oppo DV-980H DVD player delivers excellent performance and an unparalleled feature set for the price, if you're not ready to get a high-def player.
[ Music ] >> Hi, I'm Matthew Moskoviciak, associate editor at cnet.com and this is the Oppo DV-980H. Now we've been a big fan of Oppo players for a while, and this is no exception. Unlike some of Oppo's earlier players this one actually looks pretty nice. It has a black front panel which is pretty stylish. The remote is pretty much the same from earlier players. It's not that great, but it has some nice features. The directional pad is easy to use and it is glow in the dark so while it doesn't have backlighting you can at least see it somewhat in a darkened home theater. One thing that we've complained about on some earlier Oppo DVD players is that the disc tray feels a little flimsy. This one's a little bit better, but it's -- still feels flimsy when you take it out. However, we've had Oppo players in our lab for quite some time and we never run into an issue, so while it may feel flimsy we don't think it's actually a real-world problem. Now as many Oppo players, this is packed with features. It can play regular DVD easy and up-convert them to 1080 P, and it also can play the niche audio formats DVD audio and S A CD, which is a nice feature for enthusiasts to still have those discs in their collection. Looking around the back there's a lot of connectivity on the Oppo. There's an A C output as we mentioned before, there's also 7.1 analog multichannel outputs for older analog receivers. They're also both optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, as well as the standard stereo analog output. Of course like all up-converting DVD players, it won't make your DVDs look high def, but it can make them a little bit better depending on what TV you have. Overall we really like the DV0-980H, but the only thing you have to consider is that at this price point it's very close to HD DVD players, so you may want to consider stepping up since HD DVDs look a lot better than anything the Oppo can output. I'm Matthew Moskoviciak from cnet.com and this is the Oppo DV-980H. ^M00:01:56[ Music ]
