Nothing ventured -- the Roost Smart Alarm makes no gains

[MUSIC] I don't know why this thing exists. Now hang on, I know why smoke detectors exist, but specifically I don't know why Roost made the Roost smart smoke detector. I had high hopes for this thing. This is the company behind The Roost's smart battery, which I really liked. And I thought the smoke detector would up their game and compete with Nest, but it doesn't. This Roost costs 80 bucks. It detects smoke, fire, carbon monoxide, natural gas. There's also a $60 version of the same thing that just does smoke and fire. Both of them are hardwired with a battery backup. But even though this is called a smart smoke detector, Literally nothing is smart about the smoke detector itself. All of the smarts come from the battery. So if you have a dumb smoke detector, you can do everything this guy can do just by buying that $35 Roost 9 volt. So if you need a replacement detector, this is a fine buy. It worked well in our test It's just not as smart as the [UNKNOWN] Protect and not as affordable as the Roost smart battery on its own. [MUSIC]
