Pro football team testing robots in tackling drills (Tomorrow Daily 371)

Culture
[MUSIC] Greetings, citizens of the Internet, welcome to Tomorrow Daily., it's the best geek talk-show in the whole universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda, Jeff Cannata is being replaced by [INAUDIBLE] today. He will be back tomorrow, he's out on assignment. So for now, let's hit the headlines. American football can be a pretty dangerous sport at the professional level. So what if we had robots to help us. This is MVP. But that doesn't stand for most valuable player, it means Mobile Virtual Player. And it was created by a team at Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering. It's operated by remote control and helps football players practice drills like tackling and other skills by moving at speeds similar to a running human. It can also cut and weave around human players, making it a great option for practicing without increasing risk from injuries or repetitive impact. National Football League team the Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Steelers are currently using MVP in their offseason workout, but we will have to wait to see if it makes a difference until the official season kicks off this Fall. Also have a complicated robot like MVP, to more Simple executions, this homemade robot allows dogs and their owners to show affection for each other. Engineer James Cochran posted a video on YouTube titled World's First IOT Robot People/Pet Affectionator He says petting his dog gave him the idea one day, to build a robot that could pat his pooch on the head, offer a treat, and then give the dog the option to tap a bottom and reciprocate the very same back to its owner. He used an Arduino Nano, and a pair each of motor drivers, geared motors, and hobby motors. [UNKNOWN] It's a super cute video especially the making of part showing the many tests needed to make the machine work. He also has a lot of really cool experiments available on his YouTube channel for you to watch if you're so inclined. It's bd594. That's the username. So you can check that out if you would like to see more of his That is it for our headlines. As to which story, I mean I think we gotta talk about MVP. This is really cool. I love this idea of bringing robots into a really physical activity as the way to train athletes. And I think Jeff again, we'll have a lot to say about that. If you guys wanna also get in on the conversation, you can use the hashtag heytd And you can tell us what you think of MVP and where else could we use robots to train people hmm it seems like a really fun question. All right with that being said we're done with headlines so let's check out our [UNKNOWN] of the day. [MUSIC] Our phonetographer of the day today is Allen who took this on his Galaxy Note 5. He says I love the show you two. My name is Allen from Michigan. Recently I decided to combat the bug population in my backyard. I ordered A couple of oothecas, mantis egg sacks, and one recently hatched with over 100 baby mantises. This picture was shot with my Galaxy Note 5. A few escaped when I was feeding them so I placed them on my wife's fairy garden in the sun room. The praying mantis in this picture is only three millimeters long. I give you permission to use this photo for the show. Thank you, Allen. Look at that tiny little baby praying mantis. Sitting on top of that flower, or plant, or whatever that is. That is adorable, and I never thought I would say that about a praying mantis, Alan. So, congratulations you've made praying mantises cute. You can take that. You can put that on your business card, resume, whatever. It's an honor. You've made them cute. If you guys wanna send in your phonetography, you can email it to Tomorrow@CNET.com, make sure you tell us how to pronounce your name, Tell us what device you took your picture on, tell us a story about your picture, our theme this month is Springtime, or Spring. And of course, give us permission to use it on the show, it's that easy. If you wanna find us on social media, we are @TomorrowDaily on pretty much the major social media platforms. And you can also give the gift of Tomorrow Daily to a friend Frenemy or enemy by sending them to tomorrowdaily.com. I will be back tomorrow with Jeff. We will do our deep dive episode. It will be loads of fun, so don't miss it. But, until then, be good humans. See you guys next time. Bye. [MUSIC]
