Let's move into this Mars Ice House someday (Tomorrow Daily 250)

[MUSIC] NASA announced Announced the winner of their 3D printed habitat challenge and the results were pretty timely considering they just announced officially that there is liquid water on Mars. Teams Space exploration architecture and clouds architecture office won the top prize at $25,000 bucks with their Mars ice house concept. The main component of the shelter had to be made from materials readily available on the red planet. planet, so the team chose ice, since NASA already has a sort of follow the water approach to exploration. So it would make sense that they would want to go where NASA would be exploring anyway. In addition, using two layers of ice for walls means Natural light could fill the space and also act as an effective radiation shield on Mars' thin atmosphere. The area on Mars the team chose to build this conceptual housing is constantly below freezing, so astronauts wouldn't have to worry about their walls melting off. The habitat has multiple levels, communal and private areas, and a virtual hydroponic gardening area. There's a lot more to this ice house habitat than I just mentioned, and of course a bunch more science behind it. But I'll link to the winner's website in the show notes so you can check it out yourself. Next up, robot art. Or more specifically, controlling a robot arm with a paintbrush in it, with your eyes. A team of engineers at Imperial College London are working on intuitive ways to control robotic lens and GazeSpace is their software that may help do just that. The system tracks eye movement and translates them into commands for a robot to perform. They tested the system with a robotic arm holding a paintbrush. The woman controlling the robot had to make looks to start and end the robot's brush strokes, blink three times to tell the robot she wanted to change paint colors, look at the color she wanted to use to get the robot to dip the brush into that color, And then blink three more times to make the arm return to the canvas to continue painting. This is really great research that could potentially be a huge boon to patients with motor control issues, or other disabilities. Or it could somebody be used to control a robot in your house, and make it do something you don't wanna do, like dishes, for example, or fold your laundry. While you do something more fun, like play video games or Netflix and chill. Last day's news today, obviously the Model X, CEO of Tesla Elon Musk took the stage last night and officially unveiled the beautiful Model X all-electric SUV and honestly, the company spent a lot of time designing this car, and it shows, because it's got go wing doors for rear passengers. Dual motors that can launch you from zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds if you buy the top-end model and a 250 mile drive range, it's an impressive feat of engineering. Now, my personal favorite part of the presentation was Elon Musk explaining that the air filtration system in the car was, So good, the Model X could be used as a bio-weapon defense vehicle when you crank that air filtration to the max. It even has its own very special button for that purpose. If you're drooling over the Model X, like I am, you might want to double check your calendar. And your bank account. Only the Signature and Founder models are available currently, and the price tag is pretty hefty, $132,000 starting out, and an extra 10K if you wanna get the Founder Edition. Oh, and if you order one today. You'll be waiting about a year to get one. Ouch. Up next for Tesla is a reveal of the highly anticipated model three in March of next year which is supposedly going to cost about $35,000 and launch in late 2017. Yes, I'm already saving my money Let me give it to you Tesla. That's it for our headlines. Let's talk about mod squad. On this week's mod squad, we're gonna talk about Eric Strong. Who is no stranger to DIY but I thought what he did was so cool that we had to feature it on the show. So he has a little boy who's a toddler and he's got another kid on the way and so he had to find a way to talk his toddler into. Growing up and getting a big boy bed. Well, his kid wasn't to keen on that so he promised him he would build his son the best bed ever. And he did that exact thing. This bed is made almost entirely of IKEA products, so all you IKEA hackers out there, you better bow down because there is a slide, a pulley system, and even a Secret room that opens when you pull a fake book in a tiny bookshelf. The total cost of this bed was $850 in materials, but let's all be real here. This kid's reaction? Priceless, and also will last a lifetime. And I'm pretty sure Our producer Logan is already contacting this guy to get an adult sized one for his apartment.
