Loaded: Actual music videos from MTV

Culture
>> We've got an update about CBS news election coverage. Amazon wants you to do a little window-shopping, and MTV's new site brings me back to my childhood, and not necessarily in a good way. >> It's Tuesday, October 28, I'm Natali Del Conte, and it's time to get Loaded. ^M00:00:14 [ Music ] ^M00:00:18 >> MTV launched an actual music video site, with real music videos, like MTV use to have, like two decades ago. >> When I read this, I thought, um, okay, but then I went there, and I saw that it really is a throwback to MTV's roots. There are new videos there, but also tons of old classics, like the Thriller video, Like a Prayer, and Anything and Everything by Hall and Oates. It is way too much fun. They even have popup videos versions of some of the songs. I ended up spending last night surfing videos and emailing my sister and my childhood friends with links to songs and stories about what we we're like way back when we use to listen to this music. I'm kind of embarrassed about it this morning, actually. If you got one of those emails from me, sorry, got a little carried away. Netflix is bringing streaming video to the MAC with SilverLight. This is the same company that NBC used to stream the Olympic. The software will allow you to pull from the Netflix's library, which had previously only been offered to PC users. The new player will utilize Redmon's [assumed spelling] Play ready DRM, which is built into SilverLight. The rewind and playback functionality has been improved, in addition to video quality. The software will only work with Intel based Macs. Cox's cable is going to go ahead with this wireless service after all, we speculated about this a few weeks ago, and now it is confirmed. The cable provider will use Sprint's network to offer wireless service, but eventually they plan to offer their own 3G and 4G network. This will let customers bundle their mobile phone plans with their home TV and Internet service. It will also let users program their home DVR and cable boxes from their phones, as well as access that content from their phones or computers. That is cool, but that one compelling feature site, I still don't know why anyone would elect to start a new mobile phone network these days, especially considering how hard the incumbent carriers are having it in this economy, much less an [inaudible] those are the hardest mobile businesses to make a success. Why wouldn't they just partner with Sprint all together and then let them take care of this part of their service? Seems like a half-baked plan to me, but we'll see how it pans out. Do you get all anxious and itchy waiting for your computer to boot up? Yeah, I do too. Thankfully, computer manufacturers are trying to help with this. The New York Times had an article recently about a new line of laptops that have boot times of seconds rather then minutes. HP, Dell and Lenovo [assumed spelling], Asus are all said to be working on quick booting computers. Microsoft is also supposedly on board because, of course, it's the operating system that takes up so much juice. These new machines may even allow certain functions like emailing and web surfing while the rest of the OS boots up. Okay, I admit, I do want this, but I fear that it patronizes our impatience. Honestly, can we really not tolerate three whole minutes of boot time? Shouldn't we use that time to maybe make a cup of tea? Gather our thoughts for the day? Go to the bathroom? What do you think? Write me at Loaded@cnet.com. You can now stream live video over Qik with your Blackberry. The company launched a free application for Blackberry that lets you stream live video to your Qik page or other social networks like Myspace and Facebook. Unfortunately, this does not work for all Blackberries, just the Pearl and the Bold, support for the Flip and the Curve are supposedly on their way. Also, I don't really see the Blackberry Corporate crowd wanting to do too much live streaming, I might die of shock if my mom started doing this with her Curve, but stranger things have happened. Come to think of it, she's on Facebook, right now, so I guess it isn't too far of a stretch, yikes. Amazon launched a site called Window Shop this week. It doesn't do anything too revolutionary, just gives you a graphical representation of what's new and popular on the site. It looks a like Coolirish, a 3D browser plugin for Firefox. I like this and I can see myself referring to it often. You can find it at www.windowshop.com. Think twice before committing to a virtual relationship, a 43-year old woman in Japan was arrested because she killed the digital avatar of her online husband in the interactive multiplayer game MapleStory. After he divorced her in the game, she logged into his account using his ID and password and killed his avatar. She's now being charged with inappropriate computer access. Thank goodness, we are just one week away from Election Day. No, I'm not going to get all partisan on you, I'm just going to inform you what our network has planned for election day coverage. Our very own Katie Couric will be hosting a long evening of election coverage from 7 p.m. eastern all the way until 2 a.m. on CBS. She'll anchor a host of experts, including Bob Schieffer, Jeff Greenfield and more. They'll all have cool interactive touch screen to show you up to the minutes results. Afterwards, Katie Couric will do a web cast online on CNET TV as well as on www.cbsnews.com. She did these webcasts after both conventions this fall, and they were really great, if I do say so myself. We will be following along, and covering the coverage live from the CBS newsroom. You'll see our reports on www.news.com, CNET TV and here on Loaded. And you can follow on Twitter, I hope you tell me about your election experience when the day comes. My Twitter address is on the screen. Those are all your headlines for today, but I will be back tomorrow with more. Thank you, for watching. >> I'm Natali Del Conte with CNET TV, and you've just been Loaded. ^M00:05:10 [ Music ]
