Is the new MacBook Pro worth the upgrade? (The 3:59, Ep. 585)

Laptops
Welcome to the three fifty nine I'm Chang I'm Scott Stein I'm Joseph Cominski so apples mac and pro mac book air got minor upgrades I guess. The got sort of a quite upgrade earlier this week. We have them in hand Joe, you've ran some tests, I mean, all these upgrades worth it, what are your thoughts? If you have an older MacBook Pro, I can see you upgrading but it's not that significant. We do want to shell out that kind of money right away. What did you find with your speed test The speed test, it's definitely faster than the previous because they switched from the dual core to the quad core. So you definitely see a performance bump. For me and my normal day to day, the dual core is just fine. I don't know what other people's uses are right? I also wish they'd put an SD card slot back in there as well. Yeah, well, it's still good. It's still like to us well, how many points are there? Yes it is to USB type C. [CROSSTALK] Both on the same side, and you know for those of use who are using a Macbook pro now you gonna carry these downloads. Yeah. Not everyone will fit. [CROSSTALK] More if you upgrade to a higher. Her capacity. Which ones get the four USB Cs? That's the 15 inch, has it. The 15 inch has the, yeah. Man, that's how they up sell you. Yes, seriously. Get your extra ports in there. So otherwise this is essentially the same, these are the same Macs, right? Yeah, just a quiet upgrade from Apple in terms of hardware. And they added the true tone display to the Macbook. I can't tell the difference, I'm sure it looks nice. Well I guess we'd have to go into a room and just play with the lights, Right. And see [LAUGH] All right. And there says come with the new upgraded keyboard but they're not significantly different. Right? From what I hear from the people in the lab with me, they're not big fans of the keyboard again with so. All right, moving on to the Nintendo Switch light Scott, you actually had a chance to try it one of the few folks actually got a chance to try it. Yes. What do you think? So I got to play it for like 20 minutes. I've used pretty much all the Nintendo portable systems and consoles. It feels a lot more like a 3D or a 2D type of Product. It's a little smaller. It's not as small as a Playstation Vita, but it's a little more compact. It feels a little sturdier actually and so, I like the feel of it. Five point five inch screen seemed fine for all the games that I tried. They let me try Smashbrothers and Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda for like a hot few minutes. I love that but you're giving up all these extras the switch part of it and that's the part where like as I use it at home I do use the TV for stuff and that $400 dropping in price that's great losing the TV out capability losing the swappable controllers in case of wear and tear I'm not wild about that. But it does seem to be set up as a second device for the home. I know it's crazy. But parents who play games know what I'm talking about. Nintendo has hinted that there might be some way to deal with management across multiple devices. Right. You talked with Nintendo browser, which is actually his real name. Yes, it is.>> It's hard to keep referring. I know what I mean. What, What else did you mean the the D pad thing right? You learned about the D pad? Yeah so I said a D pads a great What about Andre cons and he wouldn't confirm any plans right now for anything like that enjoy cons. He talked about the horizontal capability, enjoy cons and I was versatile. Still, I feel like you can use the D pad in horizontal mode and do all the stuff that he's talking about. Maybe that's something for the Switch Pro or some other thing down the line. Right. Speaking of which again, he wouldn't refer to anything involving a more advanced sequel to the switch. Reports have said that that's been delayed, maybe that's next year. For now going into the rest of 2019, just the light, but what was really interesting is when you talk about games, what happens if you share systems which is really annoying. Right. If I keep one docked, could I just take the other on the road with me? Is that there's gonna be some way of sharing experiences. More to come on that. Right. Which I really hope is that way to take digital libraries and swap between systems. Yeah, and maybe enable family Yes, which is overdue because I feel like Apple, PlayStation, others already do this and Nintendo's been really slow to work with that. All right, there's plenty there. For more on this us out on CNET. I'm Roger Chang. I'm Scott Stein. I'm Joseph Kaminski. Thanks for listening. [BLANK_AUDIO]
