Google opens Wallet

Culture
-It's Tuesday, September 20, 2011. I'm Wilson Tang on CNET.com and it's time to get loaded. It turns out it was true Google Wallet was launched yesterday. The search company partner with Citi MasterCard, Sprint, and First Data to use Near Field Communication or NFC technology. Google wallet allows users to use their smartphones to make secure payments. The first version of the app is only available on the Sprint Nexus S 4G phone and the wallet app update will be available over the year. You will also need a Citi MasterCard or Google prepaid card. The early adaptors will get a free 10-dollar bonus added to their Google prepaid card if you sign up before the end of the year. In addition, Visa, Discover and American Express have announced their NFC specifications as well. So, future versions of Google wallet will work with those payment systems. When Netflix announced tat its DVD by mail would henceforth be known as Quickster, someone forgot to check if the Twitter handle was available. Well, it turns out that it's not and the owner of at Quickster is just as much of a character as you would find in the DVD movie. Up until the announcement, the man just a few dozen followers and many of his status updates contain references to pot smoking. Well, he since wised up and now wants to "be making banks selling his twitter handle." Unfortunately, Twitter's term of service don't allow such sales unless expressly agreed to by twitter. Netflix is not having a good week. the satellite TV provider Dish Network is set to unveil a new streaming video service based on it's purchased of blockbuster assets. Dish will hold a press conference this Friday September 23rd to announce subscription cost and details. According to Bloomberg's anonymous source, the new blockbuster will be similar to Netflix, could possibly include Starz content, which Netflix lost month. It may initially only be available to dish customers. Looking for a 4G LTE phone that doesn't break the bank, well Verizon has unveiled the $99 Pantech. The budge smart phone will go on sale on stores and online this Thursday, September 22nd for $99 after a $50 mail in rebate plus 2 year contract. Like many android phones these days, it runs Gingerbread 2.3, has a one gigahertz single core processor, features a 4-inch touchscreen, has Wi-Fi hotspot capability and yes super fast 4G LTE network speed. By now, you should all be checking for the https in a web address when making secure transactions online. -Unfortunately, that may not be enough. A pair of researchers planned to detail an attack called BEAST that can undermine the widely encryption technology. They are planning on demonstrating the attack later this week in a security conference and according to them, BEAST can decrypt cookies from pay pal in about 10 minutes. Finally, there's another security flare to worry about if you are an Apple's new Mac OS X line. According to security blog defense in depth, anyone with access to your line machine can change your password without your permission. The flaws attempts in the way OS X line source user's passwords, but there are few things you can do until Apple releases an update. First, disable automatic log in, enable sleep and screen save passwords. Disable guest accounts and manage user account, so they can run apps like the terminal. The settings can be found in system preferences. Those are your headlines for today. I'm Wilson Tang for CNET.com and you just been loaded.
