GMC Hummer EV: I've got an opinion
All right.
By now, fellow motorheads, you have likely heard that GMC will bring back the Hummer name plate as an EV pickup truck and don't think that I don't have things to say about it.
First of all, GM is betting big here not just on the idea that Pickup truck buyers are willing to go electric, but also that a very active going electric can erase the stigma of the old Hummer.
You remember it was a standalone brand from GM.
It produced these giant military inspired SUVs that could pretty much go everywhere, cared nothing about efficiency and really went after that rah rah beer football kind of crowd.
Now, this new Hummer EV certainly does have a little bit of that rah, rah, beer football persona.
After all, GMC says that it will go from 0 to 60 in just 3 seconds, produce 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 Hundred pound feet of torque.
That's right, five figures of torque, but that's a little bit misleading, actually a lot of bit misleading.
I'm pretty sure GMC is talking about wheel torque, which is the number that we traditionally think of as torque, but multiplied through a drive ratio.
So for example, the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon has 260 pound feet of torque Once you're done multiplying all of that through all of the gears and the final drive, you get a more impressive sounding 5020 pound feet of twist.
Now, that's not technically wrong, but it's not really how we describe torque.
I mean, you might as well say it has a million hamster power or something.
It's just misleading.
So my guess is that the SAE specific torque number, which is the torque coming from the electric motor, will probably be 1300, 1400 pounds of torque, which, trust me, is plenty.
Now we'll see a commercial for the Hummer EV during the Super Bowl on Sunday, Go Niners.
But we will see it in person on May 20th, and it will be available for sale in the fall of 2021.
For comparison sake, we've got the rubian r1 T was 750 horsepower and 829 pound feet of torque that should be on sale later this year.
While Ballinger says it's B two truck with 614 horsepower and 668 pound feet of torque will be available in 2021.
We don't know much about the electric F-150 from ford only that it will come to market in the next few years.
And what about Tesla's monstrosity the Cyber truck?
Well, we know nothing about that terrible thing except that it's supposed to goto production in late 2021.
Ugh

Actually, I'm pretty stoked for the advent of electric trucks and having Hummer come back as a model rather than a brand is just going to make every brand better rising tide lifting all boats and all that.
I'm partial to the Caribbean at the moment but who knows, once this commercial comes out and I actually hopefully see this Hummer, EV I might just change my mind.
